Book Synopsis Class Attitudes in America by : Spencer Piston
Download or read book Class Attitudes in America written by Spencer Piston and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-04-19 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains a long-standing puzzle in American politics: why so many Americans support downwardly redistributive social welfare programs, when such support seems to fly in the face of standard conceptions of the American public as anti-government, individualistic, and racially prejudiced. Bringing class attitudes into the analysis, Spencer Piston demonstrates through rigorous empirical analysis that sympathy for the poor and resentment of the rich explain American support for downwardly redistributive programs - not only those that benefit the middle class, but also those that explicitly target the poor. The book captures an important and neglected component of citizen attitudes toward a host of major public policies and candidate evaluations. It also explains why government does so little to combat economic inequality; in key instances, political elites downplay class considerations, deactivating sympathy for the poor and resentment of the rich.

Book Synopsis America's Priorities by : Charles Konigsberg

Book excerpt: Could there be anything more exciting and blessed assurance in our life than knowing that the creator of the universe loves us? That is what this book "God's love in 3-dimensions" is about, God's love for us, and His designed purpose for our lives; Reflecting back over more than forty years of service in the Body of Christ; I have found the most important things to be taught and expressed, to bring love and unity, and success to the life of the Church, and to our personal lives are, "God's love for us," "Our love for God," and "Our love for one another." For the success and the life of the Church, and for our personal lives, God's love must prevail. "God's Love in 3-dimensions" reiterates the plea of the writings of our Lord's Apostles, and the prayer of our Lord, for love and unity. The apostles of our Lord pleaded for us throughout the scriptures to have love and unity through the Spirit of God's love. Jesus our Lord prayed for God's unity and love for His followers; "that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in Me and I am in You." "I have made You known to them, and will continue to make You known in order that the love You have for Me may be in them and that I Myself may be in them."(John 17:21&26). What great accomplishments and success await us when we walk in unity with our Lord and Heavenly Father. The greatness of God's love, joy and peace fills our hearts, souls and minds, providing divine direction and assurance as we walk in our Lord's Spirit of love. And what great accomplishments have been made by the body of Christ when our Lord's love and unity prevail among His body members, when working together in the directives and spirit of their Lord. What creates and produces unity with the Heavenly Father, within us, and within the body of Christ?
Book Synopsis Connecting the Dots by : Peggy Wireman
Download or read book Connecting the Dots written by Peggy Wireman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite its size and social diversity, the United States is one nation, and what happens in one city or neighborhood ultimately affects all Americans. "Connecting the Dots" addresses the complex relationships between family and community, and between community and other players affecting family and community life, including the private sector, government, nonprofit groups, and religious organizations. Contrary to much rhetoric, Wireman argues that America does not suffer from a loss of family values, but from a shift in business practices and public commitments. The American dream of work hard, buy a home, and give your children a better life is no longer realistic for millions of workers, both white-collar and blue-collar. At an individual level, millions of Americans face significant challenges as they go about trying to meet the everyday responsibilities of earning an income, feeding their families, maintaining their health, finding housing, handling everyday household chores, and caring for their children. Besides identifying top-down structures, laws, and attitudes that create a supportive context for family life, the book includes bottom-up anecdotal examples to ground its policy-oriented discussion. It also provides statistical data needed to develop realistic solutions. Wireman examines diversity as well, since how America handles racial and ethnic differences remains crucial to its future. She discusses ways in which communities have created social capital, community cohesion, and local organizational ability. Wireman provides a framework for policymakers, local community leaders, and neighborhood activists to use in analyzing their situations and selecting the best approach; she also describes what various players can and must do to uphold the American dream. "Connecting the Dots" will be of keen interest to sociologists, political scientists, economists, and social workers.
