Download or read book Wounds of Love written by Frank Graziano and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2004-01-15 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Peruvian mystic St. Rose of Lima (Isabel Flores y Oliva, 1586-1617) was canonized in 1671 as the first saint of the New World and remains the object of widespread devotion today. In this engrossing new study, Frank Graziano uses the example of St. Rose to explore the meaning of female mysticism and the way in which saints are products of their cultures. Virginity, austerity, eucharistic devotion, incessant mortification, and mystical marriage to Christ characterized the devotional regimen that structured St. Rose's entire life. Many of her mystical practices echo the symptoms of such modern psychological disorders as masochism, depression, hysteria, and anorexia nervosa. Graziano offers a sophisticated argument not only for the origins and meaning of these behaviors in Rose's case, but also for the reason her culture venerated them as signs of sanctity. In the process he explores a wide range of themes, from the idea of suffering as an expression of love to the assimilation of childhood trauma through religious repetition. Graziano also offers a penetrating analysis of the politics of Rose's canonization. He finds that her mystical union with God--bypassing the institutional channels of sacrament and priestly mediation--was inherently subversive to the bureaucratized Church. Canonization was a cooptation by which Rose's competing claim to Christ was integrated into the Catholic canon. The book concludes with a fascinating exploration of mystical eroticism, with its intense experiences of vision and ecstasy. The eroticized suffering of many mystics is shown to be very human in origin: the mystic's wounded love is projected onto a God conceived to accommodate it. Wounds of Love is based on a decade of research in archives, rare books, and an extraordinary range of secondary sources. Introducing an innovative method that integrates history, cultural studies, psychoanalysis, and clinical psychology, this compelling work offers a bold new interpretation of female mysticism.

Book Synopsis Spanish Central America by : Murdo J. MacLeod
Download or read book Spanish Central America written by Murdo J. MacLeod and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seventeenth century has been characterized as "Latin America's forgotten century." This landmark work, originally published in 1973, attempted to fill the vacuum in knowledge by providing an account of the first great colonial cycle in Spanish Central America. The colonial Spanish society of the sixteenth century was very different from that described in the eighteenth century. What happened in the Latin American colonies between the first conquests, the seizure of long-accumulated Indian wealth, the first silver booms, and the period of modern raw material supply? How did Latin America move from one stage to the other? What were these intermediate economic stages, and what effect did they have on the peoples living in Latin America? These questions continue to resonate in Latin American studies today, making this updated edition of Murdo J. MacLeod's original work more relevant than ever. Colonial Central America was a large, populous, and always strategically significant stretch of land. With the Yucatán, it was home of the Maya, one of the great pre-Columbian cultures. MacLeod examines the long-term process it underwent of relative prosperity, depression, and then recovery, citing comparative sources on Europe to describe Central America's great economic, demographic, and social cycles. With an updated historiographical and bibliographical introduction, this fascinating study should appeal to historians, anthropologists, and all who are interested in the colonial experience of Latin America.
Book Synopsis The Food and Cooking of Peru by : Flor Arcaya De Deliot

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover the rich and vibrant food and cooking of Peru, one of the most delicious, distinctive and ancient cuisines of the world Explore the fascinating origins of Peruvian food, from its roots in the Inca culture, through the rich inheritance of the Spanish conquistadors, and the later influences of African, Italian, French and Chinese immigrants An introduction to Peru's culinary traditions includes a guide to local ingredients from chilies, corn and potatoes to cassava, quinoa and fresh cheese A fantastic collection of over 65 authentic recipes including specialties from the rich coastal region, the Andean mountain range, the mysterious rainforest, and the bustling cities Illustrated with more than 400 stunning photographs, each recipe comes with step-by-step instruction and complete nutritional information Peruvian cuisine is considered to be one of the most diverse in the world. Thanks to its Inca origins and to Spanish, African, Sino-Cantonese, Japanese and finally Italian and French immigration, Peruvian cooking combines the flavors of four continents. With such a variety of traditional dishes, 28 different climates, and terrain that includes coasts, mountains, forest and jungle, Peruvian gastronomy is in constant evolution. Inca cuisine is still present in Peruvian cooking, mostly in the use of maize, potatoes, yucca and chillies - the much-loved Peruvian tamales date back to the Incas. This Andean inheritance was incorporated into the food traditions of the Spanish conquistadors in the 16th century, and by the waves of immigrants that have arrived in Peru ever since. Ceviche, one of Peru's most popular dishes, perfectly defines this fusion of Peruvian cooking: fresh fish from Peru's rich coastal fishing areas, mixed with Andean peppers, and onions from Spain, marinated in lemon juice from North Africa, and served Inca-style with potatoes and maize. Including well-known favorites, such as chicharrones (mouthwatering fried pork), empanadas (irresistible little pastries), and humitas and butifarras (tempting street-food snacks), this book also introduces dishes that have yet to travel further than the borders of Peru. These include satisfying and tasty soups that are meals in themselves; delicious corn, potato and bean side dishes; fish in tangy, spicy sauces; meat, richly flavored with chilies; and indulgent desserts that reflect the Peruvian love of sweet things. Peru's cuisine is a unique blend of the ancient with the modern; fueled by an abundance of natural ingredients; and inspired by different cooking traditions. With this book you can feast on food that combines the old world with the new, and explore the very best of one of an intriguing culinary inheritance.
