Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essex is located on the shoreline of Lake Champlain near the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains. The town was important for its role in lake commerce, shipping goods down the Champlain Canal to the burgeoning markets of New York City and via the Erie Canal to Rochester, Buffalo, and points west during America's golden age of expansion. The photographic record of Essex contains the mansions of the merchants and the houses of the workers who all lived together in this prototypical American community. The town contains a remarkable collection of Greek Revival buildings from 1820 to 1860, its period of national significance, that are still intact. Today Essex exists with the majority of its historic structures standing and little fringe development, and the edges of the hamlet continue to merge seamlessly into the agricultural countryside.

Book excerpt: Finalist for the 2017 Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Award in the Regional category The Adirondack Architecture Guide, Southern-Central Region provides a professional and insightful survey of the built environment of a unique area within New York's Adirondack Park. This book is the first field guide to the architecture of the Park, revealing the ordinary and the extraordinary, the remarkable buildings by prominent designers, as well as the hidden, unexpected gems few know exist. Based on more than seven thousand miles of fieldwork and years of research, the guide comprises more than seven hundred sites traversing the geographic range, socioeconomic strata, and historical span of the region from the late 1700s to the present. Organized according to clearly marked travel routes and fourteen tours on the ground and on the water, it features detailed maps and coordinates for each site, along with many beautiful photographs. Also included are eleven companion essays drawing on the expertise of professionals, local historians, and Adirondack residents that delve into the what, where, and why people built in the Adirondacks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celebrated and hidden figures from First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln's seamstress to Elsa Schiaparelli and Chromat revealed through their stories and most compelling works. Diane Von Furstenberg, Vivienne Westwood, Sarah Burton, Kate and Laura Mulleavy, Donna Karan, and Iris van Herpen are among the great women designers to emerge in the last few decades. We now live in an age when no one would dare call them "that little seamstress," as Paul Poiret disdainfully referred to Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel more than a century ago. The Women Who Revolutionized Fashion highlights early innovative and contemporary designers working in a variety of materials and genres. This unique volume profiles widely-known early fashion vanguards such as Jeanne Lanvin, Callot Soeurs, and Madeleine Vionnet, as well as underrepresented women who revolutionized fashion from the mid-1700s to the present. More than one hundred works--including street fashion, ready-to-wear, traditional, and haute couture--celebrate women designers' concepts of dress and beauty. Through the work of more than fifty individual style makers, The Women Who Revolutionized Fashion illuminates issues of representation, creativity, and distinctiveness, as well as the labor challenges surrounding fashion today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rare and vintage photographs depict the interesting and tragic history of the Essex Mountain Sanatorium. Founded in 1907 amidst protests and a burgeoning suffrage movement, Essex Mountain Sanatorium was the result of two Montclair, New Jersey, women who successfully lobbied local government to establish a tuberculosis sanatorium in a then vacant cottage for wayward girls. From these humble beginnings, the hospital grew to become one of the finest treatment centers in the nation, expanding into a complex of 20 buildings that encompassed nearly 300 acres. Ironically, medical advances pioneered at places such as the sanatorium and the advent of antitubercular drugs in the years following World War II led to decreasing patient enrollment, which made such large facilities unnecessary. When it was eventually abandoned in the early 1980s, the hospital began its second act as a haven for urban explorers, vandals, and arsonists, becoming shrouded in mystery and the source of local legends and myths. After suffering years of neglect and abuse, the main complex would finally fall to wreckers in 1993, ending an important era in county, state, and national history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now a major motion picture starring Nicolas Cage and directed by Gabe Polsky. In his National Book Award–winning novel Augustus, John Williams uncovered the secrets of ancient Rome. With Butcher’s Crossing, his fiercely intelligent, beautifully written western, Williams dismantles the myths of modern America. It is the 1870s, and Will Andrews, fired up by Emerson to seek “an original relation to nature,” drops out of Harvard and heads west. He washes up in Butcher’s Crossing, a small Kansas town on the outskirts of nowhere. Butcher’s Crossing is full of restless men looking for ways to make money and ways to waste it. Before long Andrews strikes up a friendship with one of them, a man who regales Andrews with tales of immense herds of buffalo, ready for the taking, hidden away in a beautiful valley deep in the Colorado Rockies. He convinces Andrews to join in an expedition to track the animals down. The journey out is grueling, but at the end is a place of paradisal richness. Once there, however, the three men abandon themselves to an orgy of slaughter, so caught up in killing buffalo that they lose all sense of time. Winter soon overtakes them: they are snowed in. Next spring, half-insane with cabin fever, cold, and hunger, they stagger back to Butcher’s Crossing to find a world as irremediably changed as they have been.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Boak & Paris may not be a household name in most households, but this architectural firm was key to the development of apartment buildings that are among the finest in New York City. Annice Alt's book analyzes this firm and its exceptional buildings in detail and places them within the context of speculative real estate development. The book provides an important contribution to the understanding of the vernacular buildings that create the streetscapes that New Yorkers love and that give the city its unique character." Andrew S. Dolkart Director, Historic Preservation Program, Columbia University School of Ar chitecture, Planning and Preservation; author of the award-winning The Row House Reborn: Architecture and Development in New York City, 1908-1929 and Morningside Heights: A History of its Architecture and Development "Alt's thoroughly researched book provides new information and insights into the architectural work of Boak & Paris and Boak & Raad. It is a surprise to discover the wealth of buildings, particularly the apartment houses that they are responsible for. Many of the Boak & Paris projects from the 1920-30's employ interesting architectural terra-cotta elements. To revisit the apartments from the 1950s and 60s is a fascinating exercise. Fine period images are of great value in elucidating this quest." Susan Tunick President, Friends of Terra Cotta; author, Terra-Cotta Skyline: New York's Architectural Ornament "New York's architecture buffs can rejoice: Annice Alt has completed her monograph on Boak & Paris. The personal approach she takes in her writing--and extensive quotations from original sources--bring us into the adventure of her research, where we meet not just Russell Boak and Hyman Paris, but also such august architectural personages as Emery Roth and Gaetan Ajello, along with the clients--such as plumber-turneddeveloper Sam Minskoff--who kept them busy during the middle decades of the 20th century, turning Manhattan into an island of cliff dwellers. " Anthony W. Robins Architectural historian; author Grand Central Terminal: 100 Years of a New York Landmark and a guide t o New York City Art Deco architecture (forthcoming) "Boak was an unsung architect who was incapable of doing a bad drawing, a bad design. No one is comparable. Boak just had taste, he had class." Elihu Rose Vice Chairman, Rose Associates, Inc.
