Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third edition of Essentials of Symbolic Logic is a concise and clearly written introduction to the topic. Based on years of use in colleges and universities, the book provides an accessible and thorough grounding in sentence logic and predicate logic. While technical jargon is kept to a minimum, all necessary logical concepts and vocabulary are explained clearly. A standard system of natural deduction is developed, and readers are given suggestions for developing strategies for creating derivations (proofs) in this system. An instructor’s website is available with solutions to all the exercises in the text, including the many new exercises which have been added to this new edition.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Essentials of Logic: Being Ten Lectures on Judgment and Inference IN this course of lectures I have attempted to carry out, under the freer conditions of the University Extension system, a purpose conceived many years ago at Oxford. It was suggested to me by the answer of a friend, engaged like myself from time to time in teaching elementary Logic, to the question which I put to him, What do you aim at in teaching Logic to beginners? What do you think can reasonably be hoped for? If the men could learn what an Inference is, it would be something, was the reply. The course of lectures which I now publish was projected in the spirit thus indicated. Though only the two last discourses deal explicitly with Inference, yet those which precede them contribute, I hope, no less essentially, to explain the nature of that single development which in some stages we call Judgment, and in others Inference. So far as I could see, the attempt to go to the heart of the subject, however imperfectly executed, was appreciated by the students, and was rewarded with a serious attention which would not have been commanded by the trivialities of formal Logic, although more entertaining and less abstruse. Limits of Space in a booklet to be presented free of charge prevent including the solution to every exercise in Part I, Informal Logic, and Part III, The Logical Structure of Science. Some of these, of course, are so elementary they offer no problem to instructors; but others require such lengthy explanation that it is feasible only to give solutions to representative exercises of their kind. In Part I (chapters 1 most of the exercises have more than one defensible answer. Accordingly, correct answers may be found that do not appear here. The instructor should notice that the Roman numerals designating groups of solutions in this manual correspond to numerals in the textbook that designate groups of exercises; these numerals do not refer to section numbers in the text. Book excerpt: Logic is--arguably--all about proving, but proofs can be "costly," often impossibly so, and today most are delegated to (partly) automatic provers, namely by so-called SAT solvers, software based on the (Boolean) satisfiability problem, or SAT. This is the dual of the (Boolean) validity problem, or VAL, at the core of the conception of the digital computer via Hilbert's Entscheidungsproblem and the Universal Turing Machine. While these problems--VAL significantly less so than SAT--feature in introductory logic textbooks aimed at computer science students, they are largely or wholly absent from textbooks targeting a mathematical or philosophical studentship. Formal logic: Classic problems and proofs corrects this--in our view--misguided state of affairs by providing the basics of formal classical logic from the central viewpoint of a formal, or computer, language that distinguishes itself from the other formal or computer languages by its ability to preserve truth, thus potentially providing solutions to decision problems formulated in terms of VAL and/or SAT. This fundamental aspect of classical logic, truth-preservation, is elaborated on from three main formal semantics, to wit, Tarskian, Herbrand, and algebraic (Boolean) semantics, which, in turn, via the adequateness results for the standard first-order logic, underlie the main proof systems of direct and indirect, or refutation, proofs, associated to VAL and SAT, respectively. Not focusing on the history of classical logic, this book nevertheless provides discussions and quotes central passages on its origins and development, namely from a philosophical perspective. Not being a book in mathematical logic, it takes formal logic from an essentially mathematical perspective. Biased towards a computational approach, with SAT and VAL as its backbone, this is thus an introduction to logic that covers essential aspects of the three branches of logic, to wit, philosophical, mathematical, and computational.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Formal logic provides us with a powerful set of techniques for criticizing some arguments and showing others to be valid. These techniques are relevant to all of us with an interest in being skilful and accurate reasoners. In this highly accessible book, Peter Smith presents a guide to the fundamental aims and basic elements of formal logic. He introduces the reader to the languages of propositional and predicate logic, and then develops formal systems for evaluating arguments translated into these languages, concentrating on the easily comprehensible 'tree' method. His discussion is richly illustrated with worked examples and exercises. A distinctive feature is that, alongside the formal work, there is illuminating philosophical commentary. This book will make an ideal text for a first logic course, and will provide a firm basis for further work in formal and philosophical logic.

It is only the fragment of a general theory, but the content of all the chapters of the old logic, which are commonly regarded as essential, except that one which deals with the calculus of classes, will be found included.
