Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Larger Life: Sermons and an EssayThe title of this collection of sermons has been happily chosen. It admirably indicates their motive and character. There is the larger life in Christ as well as the higher life in Him. As the one mounts voluntarily to heights of self-renunciation in His service which are over and above the level of His mere command, so the other pene trates more deeply the mind and will of God in Him, sees the marvellous depth and scope of the Truth He taught in all its endless applications, and rejoices to live and act in this wider outlook and range as they cannot who only narrowly believe and blindly obey.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Gospel and the Age written by W. C. Magee and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel and the Age: Sermons on Special Occasions The sermons contained in this volume were preached, as their title states, on special occasions. They were selected for publication not as possessing, for that reason, any special merit, but because they were the only ones the publication of which was possible for their author. The preacher of what are called extempore sermons - that is to say, sermons not read from manuscript, but delivered from brief notes - cannot reproduce them in print unless they happen to have been taken down at the time by a reporter. Such reports can hardly ever be verbatim, and are for the most part more or less imperfect and inaccurate. Book Synopsis Sermons on the Christian Life (Classic Reprint) by : John De Witt
Download or read book Sermons on the Christian Life (Classic Reprint) written by John De Witt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-16 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons on the Christian Life The following sermons were written and preached when the author was a Pastor. They are not dis eussions of doctrine; they are sermons on various aspects and elements of human life. These are treated in their relations to Christianity. But the doctrines of Christianity, though not expounded, are implied. They underlie and support each discourse. As the sermons were prepared, not for publication, but for delivery before the writer's congregation, their style and language often approach those of familiar conversation. In addressing his parishioners, a preacher feels that he is at liberty to indulge in abrupt turns of speech, in sentences rhetorically in complete and in repetitions, which, in an essay, would be out of place. The form of the sermon is deter mined by the relations of the preacher to his audience, quite as much as it is by his theme. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons and Essays: By Ministers of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South The inscription, To the unknown God, While it Stands a monument of the insufficiency of the light of nature to guide our dark and bewildered minds into the paths of truth, righteousness and eternal life, will, at least indirectly, lead us to admire and adore the infinite Wisdom and goodness of the. God of all grace in furnishing our benighted world with a revelation of himself, and of his purposes and designs con cerning man. In tracing the history Of that divine revelation contained in the Holy Scriptures, we observe that all its important con tents were not to burst upon our world at once. It contained the plan of an infinite mind, and the times, manner, and methods of unfolding it were best adapted to the ends for which it was designed. The libellers of the Church's moral rectitude are not the learned, and the sincere, nor the clearminded, but the shallow and ignorant, the malignant, and they who invert the quality of charity that thinketh no evil and rejoiceth not in iniquity. There is no more practical proof of fond ness for anything than being willing to pay for it, and it is to hear of iniquity that they pay who go re joicingly to the regale on the experiences of es caped monks and escaped nuns. Book Synopsis The Victory of Faith by : Edward Lindsay Powell
Download or read book The Victory of Faith written by Edward Lindsay Powell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-05 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Victory of Faith: Sermons and Addresses The sermon is the stateliest and most noble form of human Speech. It deals with the deepest questions and most vital subjects that can engage the attention of man. The preacher who has a real message from God, and can deliver it in such a way as to command the attention of the public, is a blessing to any age. He is a prophet of God, and his utterances cannot fail to profoundly impress the public mind. When such a preacher has power to clothe his message in winning speech, and to breathe into it a passion which it has begotten in his own heart, his sermons have an added value and are entitled to a wider hearing than they can receive from the pulpit, no matter how large the audiences may be. The author of these sermons combines, in a remarkable degree, these essential elements of a great preacher: clear ness of thought, power of imagination and feeling, and the gift of vivid expression. He sees truth in its larger rela tions and has a clear grasp of the fundamental verities of religion. He sees too clearly the great and vital issues of Christianity to waste much time on doubtful disputations. The volume of sermons which is here offered to the public is scarcely less notable for the topics it discusses than for the vigor of style in which they are treated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermon, Addresses and Essays: Delivered at the Celebration of the One Hundredth Anniversary of the Foundation of the First Unitarian Church of Philadelphia The valuable essays and addresses contained in this volume were delivered at the meetings held in the First Unitarian Church of Philadelphia, May twelfth and thirteenth, 1896, in celebration of the One Hundredth Anniversary of the organization of our Society. It is deeply to be regretted that the list is not quite complete; for there is wanting one of the most remarkable and instructive of the essays, that of Rev. Merle St. Croix Wright on "The Development of Philosophy During the Century." This was given without notes, and the stenographic report proving imperfect, owing to the difficult nature of the subject, it was impossible for the author to reproduce what he had spoken without greater labor than it seemed just to ask him to undertake. And not even the art preservative of all arts is sufficient to embalm for us, in these pages, the spirit and cheer of the highly interesting occasion. Held, necessarily, a calendar month in advance of the actual date, the heats of summer were avoided, and delightful weather favored our proceedings. At the four sessions our Church was filled, - on the two evenings crowded, - with attentive, serious and happy congregations. The only social feature of the celebration was the pleasant informal luncheon at a neighboring hotel, at which assembled nearly two hundred friends from abroad, with members of our own and the other Unitarian Societies of this city. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Decay of Modern Preaching: An Essay Established ritual, or where the ritual is so unattractive as to command little interest, (preaching forms a main part of modern worship, and extempore prayer is generally little more than an indirect exhortation of the same kind. Most people, Whether really religious or not, are conservative enough to go regularly to their church on Sunday, and would feel that they had been defrauded of part of their due exercise if the sermon were omitted. Download or read book A Testament of Hope written by Martin Luther King and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 1990-12-07 with total page 740 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "We've got some difficult days ahead," civil rights activist Martin Luther King, Jr., told a crowd gathered at Memphis's Clayborn Temple on April 3, 1968. "But it really doesn't matter to me now because I've been to the mountaintop. . . . And I've seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight that we as a people will get to the promised land." These prohetic words, uttered the day before his assassination, challenged those he left behind to see that his "promised land" of racial equality became a reality; a reality to which King devoted the last twelve years of his life. These words and other are commemorated here in the only major one-volume collection of this seminal twentieth-century American prophet's writings, speeches, interviews, and autobiographical reflections. A Testament of Hope contains Martin Luther King, Jr.'s essential thoughts on nonviolence, social policy, integration, black nationalism, the ethics of love and hope, and more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Expository Essays and Discourses With natural surprise and pleasure I find that An Ex positor's Note-book has reached a fourth edition, while Biblical Expositions is steadily passing out of a second edition. Encouraged by the generous welcome accorded to these former volumes, I now venture to issue what is virtually a third volume of the series. Like its predecessors, Expository Essays and Discourses is composed - for the most part, yet not wholly - of papers which have already appeared in various Magazines; like them, also, it deals for the most part with obscure and difficult Scriptures, or Scriptures of special moment and interest. I shall be very thankful if any of my brethren who have less leisure for study than myself, or less ample means and aids for the study of the Bible, should find my work in any way useful to them.
