Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This provocative collection of papers from an international array of theologians explores the Christian doctrine of the Trinity in the context of twentieth-century cultural and religious pluralism. How should Christians think about their faith in relation to other faiths and in relation to culture in general? Can the Trinity fit into a global religion? These essays — originally presented at the Fifth Edinburgh Dogmatic Conference — show how a full-orbed Trinitarian doctrine, with a proper emphasis on both the One and the Three, provides the necessary resources for successfully addressing the problems and the possibilities of contemporary pluralism. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God, Sexuality and the Self is a new venture in systematic theology. Sarah Coakley invites the reader to re-conceive the relation of sexual desire and the desire for God and - through the lens of prayer practice - to chart the intrinsic connection of this relation to a theology of the Trinity. The goal is to integrate the demanding ascetical undertaking of prayer with the recovery of lost and neglected materials from the tradition and thus to reanimate doctrinal reflection both imaginatively and spiritually. What emerges is a vision of human longing for the triune God which is both edgy and compelling: Coakley's théologie totale questions standard shibboleths on 'sexuality' and 'gender' and thereby suggests a way beyond current destructive impasses in the churches. The book is clearly and accessibly written and will be of great interest to all scholars and students of theology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the best instruction on the most difficult issues that characterize St. Thomas Aquinas's Trinitarian theology. It explores the very purpose of Trinitarian theology, with an emphasis on distinguishing St. Thomas's approach from the various forms of arid rationalism and on displaying Aquinas's debt to Augustine's spiritual vision. The chapters on the Trinity engage the relationship of the Holy Spirit to the Son according to Aquinas--a topic treated in Trinity in Aquinas but now deepened by a meditation on "the Spirit of Truth"--as well as the "personal mode" of Trinitarian action ad extra. For readers seeking to understand how and why Aquinas's theology is fully Trinitarian rather than (as is sometimes suggested) modalist, Emery's exposition of the Trinitarian action ad extra and our relation in grace to each Person of the Trinity will be necessary reading. Fr. Emery devotes two chapters to the sacraments as they relate to the Church, in each case showing that Aquinas's insights speak profoundly to contemporary controversies. Another chapter treats briefly the place of the Eastern Fathers in Aquinas, a question that has become increasingly important in ecumenical dialogue so as to show that Thomistic theology is not antithetical to reunion with the Orthodox East. In the context of a world plagued by Cartesian dualism and inability to come to terms with the scope of human suffering, two further chapters treat Aquinas's hylomorphic understanding of the human person and his account of God's permission of evil (the latter through the lens of Charles Cardinal Journet). The book concludes on a fittingly ecumenical note, as Emery takes up George Lindbeck's influential reading of Aquinas as a "postliberal" theologian who thereby has an important place in contemporary Protestant-Catholic dialogue. In the hands of Gilles Emery, the work of Thomas Aquinas is shown to contribute profoundly to the task of appreciating and resolving the central theological discussions and controversies of our time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this original, contemporary doctrine of the Trinity, William Placher places the history of theology in dialogue with postmodern philosophy and yields a provocative postliberal interpretation. Placher deftly connects a radical view of God's transcendence with a narrative Christology. His resulting thesis is twofold: first, the doctrine of the Trinity is not a way of explaining the inner nature of God but a way of preserving God's mystery; and second, the Trinity should be presented by showing how Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are one God--moving from the Three to the One, not the other way around. An exceptionally clear and engaging presentation of this central Christian doctrine, The Triune God both advances the scholarly and ecclesial discussion on the Trinity and provides an unusually concrete introduction to postliberal theology.

Furthermore, Koch relates his study of individual prophets to theological currents that have been flowing through the scholarly world in recent decades." --Bernhard W. Book excerpt: The Trinity is the central mystery of the Christian faith. What can we say about the divine nature, and what does it mean to say that God is Father, Son, Holy Spirit, three persons who are one in being? In this book, best selling author Thomas Joseph White, OP, examines the development of early Christian reflection on the Trinity, arguing that essential contributions of Patristic theology are preserved and expanded in the thought of Thomas Aquinas. By focusing on Aquinas’ theology of the divine nature as well as his treatment of divine personhood, White explores in depth the mystery of Trinitarian monotheism. The Trinity: On the Nature and Mystery of the One God also engages with influential proposals of modern theologians on major topics such as Trinitarian creation, Incarnation and crucifixion, and presents creative engagements with these topics. Ultimately any theology of the cross is also a theology of the Trinity, and this book seeks to illustrate how the human life, death, and resurrection of Jesus reveal the inner life of God as Trinity.
