The principal bond of union among them is their practical character. Beyond that, there is little to connect them apart from the individuality of the author and the range of his studies. That there is a certain amount of novelty in the various suggestions here embodied, will be admitted on the most cursory perusal. The farther question of their worth i necessarily left open. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on Professional Education But if there be any doubt of the actual exist ence of peculiar genius, and if, on the contrary, there is reason to believe, that all the faculties of the mind can be directed by circumstances to any particular object, prudent parents would de cide as early as possible what the professions of their children are to be, and would trust securely to the power of education. In this point of View it becomes necessary to examine the long-con tested question concerning genius, not merely as a subject of curious speculation, but'of immediate practical utility. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Educational Essays, or Practical Observations on the Intellectual and Moral Training and Scholastic Discipline of Youth: With Inquiries and Remarks Illustrating the Respective Advantages of Home and Colonial Education Undeterred by such considerations, the writer of the following pages presumes to lay before the public a few hints, on subjects not usually treated of in books on education; being some of the results of more than forty years' experience in tuition; trusting that however unimportant some of his suggestions may appear to the general reader, they may be appreciated by those who, from being engaged in kindred pursuits, and having a practical knowledge of the' difficulties attending them, are qualified to judge of the correctness of the plans proposed, as well as of their utility in facilitating scholastic duties. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cambridge Essays on Education Our idea has been this: at a time of much educational enterprise and unrest, we believed that it would be advisable to collect the opinions of a few experienced teachers and administrators upon certain questions of the theory and motive of education which lie a little beneath the surface. To deal with current and practical problems does not seem the first need at present. Just now, work is both common as well as fashionable; most people are doing their best; and, if anything, the danger is that organisation should outrun foresight and intelligence. Moreover a weakening of the old compulsion of the classics has resulted, not in perfect freedom, but in a tendency on the part of some scientific enthusiasts simply to substitute compulsory science for compulsory literature, when the real question rather is whether obligatory subjects should not be diminished as far as possible, and more sympathetic attention given to faculty and aptitude. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in American Education The six essays which make up this volume have been prepared at various times and deal with a variety of subjects. Nevertheless there is between them a thread of connection and re lation. They all are based upon two funda mental ideas: that education is substantially one from beginning to end, so that the same or similar methods may be applied throughout; and that teachers of every grade and subject have a common interest and may learn from each other. They are the outcome of a desire to make some small contribution to the great common fund of experience. That so many of these essays deal with the problems of the primary and secondary schools needs no apology. Every American must feel an interest in the systems which reach the great est number of pupils, and lay the foundations for later study. A short service in the Cam bridge School Committee has taught some thing of the aims and practical difficulties of primary and secondary education. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teacher Essays and Addresses on Education The papers of this volume fall into three groups, two of the three being written by myself. From my writings on education I have selected only those which may have some claim to permanent interest, and all but two have been tested by previous pub lication. Those of the first group deal with ques tions about which we teachers, eager about our im measurable art beyond most professional persons, never cease to wonder and debate: What is teaching? How far may it influence character? Can it be prao ticed on persons too busy or too poor to come to our class - rooms? To subjects of what scope should it be applied? And how shall we content ourselves with its necessary limitations? Under these diverse head ings a kind of philosophy of education is outlined. The last two papers, having been given as lectures and stenographically reported, I have left in their original colloquial form. A group of papers on Har vard follows, preceded by an explanatory note, and the volume closes with a few papers by Mrs. Palmer.. She and I often talked of preparing together a book on education. Now, alone, I gather up these frag mentsn. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fundamentals in Education, Art and Civics: Essays and Addresses This volume was first suggested by inquiries for certain material in it which is now virtually out of print. Most of this material was originally pre pared by request, and presented in various forms, written or oral, at a time when the subjects treated were supposed to be of current interest. Nothing, however, has been included here which may not be considered to have also some present interest, either practical or historic. To most of the contents, in deed, both these tests might be applied. What is said, for instance, with reference to education and to art not only upholds principles and methods that it is believed that success in these departments must put into practise to the end of time; but, to those who can read between the lines, it will also reveal the particular necessity for upholding the same cc casioned by theories and tendencies illustrated in certain facts concerning the developments of these departments in our own country during the latter part of the last century. A similar connection may be equally recognized between the mainly historic nature of certain of the subjects, and the never ceas ing practical importance of the inferences logically deducible from them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems in Modern Education Addresses and Essays This volume is composed of some of the essays and addresses which, in spite of the many exact ing duties of a busy professional life, I have found time to prepare. All but four of the pa pers here brought together were delivered before Texas audiences, two of the exceptions being written for national educational societies, the third for the Association of Southern Colleges and Preparatory Schools, and the fourth for the Southern Educational Association. The essays and addresses were, in each in stance, born of a desire to meet the demands of a practical situation; and were, therefore, con cerned, not so much with the presentation of ab stract ideals, as with the application of well recognized educational principles to the solution of school problems that abound in our day. If there be a unifying principle in the several dis eussions, it is that of concrete idealism, which is the controlling, characteristic attribute of human evolution, and which insists upon the wisdom and necessity of reckoning with environment in order to obtain desirable results. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on Education and Kindred Subjects The profession of teaching has long been characterised by certain habitual convictions, which Spencer undertook to shake rudely, and even to deride. The first of these con victions is that all education, physical, intellectual, and moral, must be authoritative, and need take no account of the natural wishes, tendencies, and motives of the ignorant and undeveloped child. The second dominating conviction is that to teach means to tell, or show, children what they ought to see, believe, and utter. Expositions by the teacher and books are therefore the true means of education. The third and supreme conviction is that the method of educa tion which produced the teacher himself and the contem petary or earlier scholars authors, and publicists, must be the righteous and sufficient method. Its fruits demon strate its soundness, and make it sacred. Herbert Spencer, in the essays included in the present volume, assaulted all three of these firm convictions. Accordingly, the ideas on education which he put forth more than fifty years ago have penetrated educational practice very slowly particularly in England; but they are now coming to prevail in most civilised countries, and they will prevail more and more. Through him, the thoughts on education of Comenius, Montaigne, Locke, Milton, Rousseau, Pestalozzi, and other noted writers on this neglected subject are'at last winning their way into practice, with the modi fications or adaptations which the immense gains of the human race in knowledge and power since the nineteenth century Opened have shown to be wise.
