Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Meaning of the Idylls of the King: An Essay in Interpretation The letter of Lord Tennyson, the facsimile of which appears on the first page, was written in commendation of a brief magazine article on The Idylls of the K ing published in 1885. The inter pretation of the article of 1885 was more fully developed in a series of short studies, also published in magazine form in 1895. The present essay is a still further amplification of the original concep tion, to which is added an appendix of notes eluci dating some points passed over in the text. The author has thought it better to treat these points apart, in order to avoid unnecessary digressions from the main tenor of his theme. This study is now printed in book form, in response to re peated requests to put the interpretation in a more convenient shape than the pages of a magazine. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in the Idylls: An Essay on Mr. Tennyson's Idylls of the King Not being, therefore, at first designed for publica tion, the work was not undertaken in any formal manner such as would involve a discussion of, and proper references to, any existing authorities on the subject. At the same time many most valuable hints have been derived from the writings of others, as from articles which have from time to time appeared in Reviews and Magazines. Before sending this essay to the press, a careful attempt has been made to recover, and give references to, any such prior publications, to which an acknowhave been lost sight of. Should any such acknow ledgment still be lacking, the author trusts that the omission will, therefore, be excused as unintentional.
