Book excerpt: Consumers' shopping behavior connects market goods expenditure with the out-of-market time allocation in their daily time use. This study is composed of three essays. In the first essay, data are collected from the American Time Use Survey and it is found that an indvidual's time devoted to shopping is positively determined by opportunity cost of time. Grocery shopping and other shopping, as two distinct types of shopping, react differently to a series of individual and household characteristics as well as by seasons. The corresponding marginal effects also differentiate between shopping time, leisure time, and home production time. In regards to gender difference, females dominate in amount of shopping time, and males and females respond differently on change of time due to change in economic status. The second essay examines the demand for market goods as an important factor in the process of household production. The researcher analyzes food and non-food expenditures of households in the United States using the 2002 and 2003 Current Population Survey Food Security Supplements. The results reveal the relationship between earned income and food purchased for home consumption, food purchased in restaurants, and non-food grocery goods purchases. It is found that expenditure for food to be consumed at home is related positively to income, while the share of total purchase devoted to home consumption is negatively related to income. Demographic variables and socioeconomic variables are found to play important roles in expenditure determination. In the third essay, a joint examination of shopping time and shopping expenditures is performed by merging the data from the researcher's time use study and expenditure study. The results of this paper show that shopping time and goods expenditure are related positively, so that the complementarities exist between grocery shopping time and grocery expenditure for American households.

This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Congestion is increasing everywhere from established urban areas to growth centers. The rate of increase is greater in these rapidly growing areas of the country. With the explosion of congestion in rapidly growing areas, how does congestion influence individual decision making? The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how congestion affects people's choices. More specifically, this research considers the role of observable household attributes as conditioning factors, influencing behavioral responses to congestion. This analysis is developed through three separate essays. The first essay focuses on commuting time as the outcome of joint residential and employment decisions. The framework hypothesizes that information about individual preferences for avoiding commuting time can be revealed through the differences in spatial distributions of commuting time. Two different choice margins are selected for the next two essays: a long term margin which would be associated with residential location decisions; and short term choice margins within the context of a random utility model for non-working trips. The second essay hypothesizes that expected congestion is sufficiently important to be displayed in one of a household's most important decisions, the selection of residential location. The effect of congestion can be captured with a hedonic price framework assuming that households select residential locations based on an expected mix of trips. The focus of the third essay changes to individual trips. That is, it hypothesizes household constraints will influence an individual's sensitivity to congestion as displayed through the members' decisions to make individual trips. This process is modeled using a random utility framework with careful attention to the transformation of a trip into a choice. This research provides evidence that household characteristics influence both long and short term decisions. There is support for the hypothesis that there are some household.

Book Synopsis Essays in Household Finance and Bank Regulation by : Vijay Narasiman

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My dissertation focuses on topics in household finance and bank regulation. In chapter 1, I estimate the household consumption response to a predictable, quasi-permanent income shock. Credit card spending rises well before the positive shock occurs and then plateaus, suggesting that households are forward-looking and have enough liquidity to increase spending. This type of household behavior is found to be remarkably similar to the simulation of a modified buffer-stock model. The main conclusion is that households appear to be quite sophisticated in their consumption behavior, which has various policy implications. In chapter 2 (joint with Divya Kirti), we present a model that describes how different types of bank regulation can affect the likelihood of fire sales in a crisis. There are three main results. First, the design of capital requirements affects whether fire sales can occur in the recapitalization process. Second, the interaction between capital and liquidity requirements causes banks to become larger and can also make fire sales more likely. Third, mandatory equity issuance can be a useful policy for limiting fire sales, but only if binding. Collectively, our findings suggest that bank regulation may have a strong effect on the likelihood of fire sales. In addition, time-varying risk weights may more effective than time-varying capital requirements in preventing fire sales. In chapter 3 (joint with Todd Keister), we investigate whether policy makers should be permitted to bail out financial institutions during a financial crisis. We develop a model that incorporates two competing views about the causes of these crises: self-fulfilling shifts in investors' expectations and deteriorating economic fundamentals. We show that - in both cases - the desirability of allowing intervention depends on a tradeoff between incentives and insurance. If policy makers can correct incentive distortions through regulation, then allowing intervention is always optimal. If regulation is imperfect and the risk-sharing benefit from intervention is absent, it is optimal to prohibit intervention. Our results show that it is possible to provide meaningful policy analysis without taking a stand on the contentious issue of whether financial crises are driven by expectations or fundamentals.
