Book excerpt: A collection of 17 essays on the colonial era in Africa designed to demonstrate to demographers the importance of historical and social contexts in thinking about African populations, and to historians the importance and complex role played by population changes in social and economic changes. Two essays are in French. The 1987 edition sold out quickly and was rarely seen and little known; the wider distribution and lower price of the paper should prevent that fate overtaking the second. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Souls of Black Folk is W.E.B. Du Bois' most famous work. While the work is often viewed as a classic in African American literature and the history of the African American experience, the sociological significance of the work has been understated. In his initial discussions with the book's original publisher, Du Bois desired to prepare a volume that would showcase his ongoing sociological work on "the Negro problems." While many editions of Du Bois' classic text have appeared, no edition has focused primarily on the eight previously published essays in their original form and chronological order. This fact alone makes The Sociological Souls of Black Folk unique. An introductory essay by the volume's editor, Robert Wortham, highlights the sociological significance of the original essays by addressing such themes as the concept of the self, the social construction of the African American experience, and racial inequality. Eight additional essays originally published between 1897 and 1900 are added by the editor in a second section. These additional sociological essays focus on African American entrepreneurship, crime, race relations, liberal arts education, the Black Church's function within the African American community, and the quality of African American life in the Southern Black Belt. The essays included in The Sociological Souls of Black Folk provide the reader with an opportunity to gain a greater appreciation for Du Bois' early sociological work and recognize that Du Bois was indeed one of the pioneering figures in the development of sociology in the United States.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1961, this book comprises of 14 studies by scholars and officials with first-hand experience of Africa and deals with the nature and organization of population censuses and with the many uses to which their results may be put. Written at a time of political transition on the African continent it was vitally important that the collection and interpretation of statistics dealing with distribution, density, migration and occupation in Africa continued. This volume shows how demographers, sociologists, anthropologists and geographers were using the research to be followed in the interpretation of the numerous censuses being conducted in the early 1960s.

Book excerpt: This book examines the promises as well as the challenges the demographic dividend brings to sub-Saharan Africa as fertility rates in the region fall and the labor force grows. It offers a detailed analysis of what conditions must be met in order for the region to take full economic advantage of ongoing population dynamics. As the book makes clear, the region will need to accelerate reforms to cope with its demographic transition, in particular the decline of fertility. The continent will need to foster human capital formation through renewed efforts in the areas of education, health and employment. This will entail a true vision and determination on the part of African leaders and their development partners. The book will help readers to gain solid knowledge of the demographic trends and provide insights into socioeconomic policies that eventually might lead sub-Saharan Africa into a successful future.

Book excerpt: In this collection of compelling essays, scholars critically examine the history, culture, and social policies that surround the African Diaspora and explore how these have shaped the experiences of African-Americans today. The essays address a wide range of related topics that include historical perspectives on black clergy, the historical significance of black poetry and literature, the place of black studies in the academy, racism on campuses, and issues concerning social work. In seeking to promote dialogue between scholars of various disciplines, this volume fosters a non-hegemonic perspective that is critical for investigating and understanding contemporary African-American culture.
