Book excerpt: Linear social interactions models where agents' payoffs depend on the average action of the observed peers have opened new areas of research in economics ranging from education to industrial organization. In the first chapter on this thesis, we propose a novelinterpretation of the Nash equilibrium based on a Markov process that evolves according to the neighboring relations in a social network. By means of this interpretation, we give a new pairwise connectivity measure and a overall centrality measure which disentangles the effects of network's topology and agents' heterogeneity that were missing in the dominant centrality measure used in this literature (Bonacich centrality). Also, this Markov approach allows to decompose equilibrium action into a structural effect given by the Markov process' stationary probability distribution common to all agents and an agent specific effect related to her location in the network. Finally, we show that this approach can be used in non-linear models, with examples in education and macroeconomics. In the second chapter, we use the approach proposed in Chapter 1 to solve a general version of the localized competition model where city's shape is interpreted as a network. Localized competition models have been at the core of the Industrial Organization literature. Hotelling (1929) and Salop (1979) are the building blocks of localized competition and their results on equilibrium prices are widely known. One of the main characteristic of these two models is that firms are symmetric in two dimensions: i) firms' location inthe city are indistinguishable and ii) firms have the same marginal cost. In this chapter, we drop both assumptions and work in a generalized setting that enriches the intuition of equilibrium pricing results. We are able to embed different horizontal differentiationmodels in this generalized setting by translating cities' topologies into the graph theory literature. This novel approach allows us to give new insights on equilibrium markup results and also to perform comparative statics on city's topology. In all of our results, we show that the main driving factor on pricing decisions in localized competition models is the Random Walk that city's topology defines when interpreted as a graph. In the last chapter, I depart from the previous chapters and develop a model on Most favored-nation (MFN) and its relation to third degree price discrimination. MFN clauses in wholesale contracts have been the subject of recent controversy and renewed antitrustscrutiny. We demonstrate that an environment where MFN clauses may be adopted shares an equivalence property with an environment where a monopolist sells a good exhibiting negative consumption externalities directly to consumers. The welfare effectsclosely follow those developed in the classic third degree price discrimination literature by Schmalensee (1981) and Varian (1985). As such, the welfare effects of wholesale MFNs are ambiguous for the same reasons the effects of uniform pricing on welfare are ambiguous in the textbook price discrimination problem.

However, the relationship between prices, profits and consumer surplus is ambiguous, but social welfare is always higher in markets with completely compatible networks. Finally, the third chapter analyzes the incentives to invest in R&D under two environmental policy instruments: the emission and performance standards, in a Cournot model of competition between two symmetric firms. These firms are subject to environmental regulations as their production of a homogeneous good entails pollution. Unlike a few models of output market available in the literature, this approach does not measure the environmental incentives using firms' aggregate cost savings. Instead, it compares the levels of social welfare obtained under both policy instruments. From the derived subgame perfect equilibria of the two games, each game associated with a different instrument, this chapter shows that social welfare under performance standard dominates that under emission standard. It also finds that further comparisons, in particular, the comparison of the investment in R&D, are ambiguous and not aligned with the welfare comparison.

Book excerpt: Over the last few decades some analytic tools intensely used by economics have produced useful insights in topics formerly in the exclusive reach of other social sciences. In particular game theory, justifiable from either a multi-person decision theoretic perspective or from an evolutionary one, often serves as a generous yet sufficiently tight framework for interdisciplinary dialogue. The three essays in this collection apply game theory to answer questions with some aspects of economic interest. The three of them have in common that they are related to topics to which other social sciences, specially sociology, have made significant contributions. While working within economics I have attempted to use constructively and faithfully some of these ideas. Chapter 1, coauthored with Xu Tan, studies situations in which a set of agents take actions in order to convey private information to an observing third party which then assigns a set of prizes based on its beliefs about the ranking of the agents in terms of the unobservable characteristic. These situations were first studied using game theoretic frameworks by Spence and Akerlof in the early seventies, but some of the key insights date back to the foundational work of Veblen. In our analysis we focus on the competitive aspect of some of these situations and cast signals as random variables whose distributions are determined by the underlying unobservable characteristics. Under this formulation different signals have inherent meanings, preceding any stable conventions that may be established. We use these prior meanings to propose an equilibrium selection criterion, which significantly refines the very large set of sequential equilibria in this class of games. In Chapter 2, coauthored with Matthew O. Jackson and Xu Tan, we study the structure of social networks that allow individuals to cooperate with one another in settings in which behavior is non-contractible, by supporting schemes of credible ostracism of deviators. There is a significant literature on the subject of cooperation in social networks focusing on the role of the network in transmitting the information necessary for the timely punishment of deviators, and deriving properties of network structures able to sustain cooperation from that perspective. Ours is one of the first efforts to understand the network restrictions that emerge purely from the credibility of ostracism, carefully considering the implications that the dissolution of any given relationship may have over the sustainability of other relations in the community. In Chapter 3 I study the sets of Pure Strategy Nash equilibria of a variety of binary games of social influence under complete information. In a game of social influence agents simultaneously choose one of two possible strategies (to be inactive or be active), and the optimal choice depends on the strategies of the agents in their social environment. Different social environments and assumptions on the way in which they influence the behavior of the agents lead to different classes of games of varying degrees of tractability. In any such game an equilibrium can be described by the set of agents that are active, and the full set of equilibria can be thus represented as a collection of subsets of the set of agents. I build the analysis of each of the classes of games that I consider around the question: What collections of sets are expressible as the set of equilibria of some game in the class? I am able to provide precise answers to these questions in some of the classes studied, and in other cases just some pointers.

I use department fixed effects and individual fixed effects to control for departmental common shocks and individual selection. In addition, I model scientists’ mobility choices and use citation breakout as the exclusion variable to address the potential endogenous year-to-year change in colleague networks. Having solved the endogeneity issue of colleague networks, I construct instruments for coauthor quality by exploiting the characteristics of the (estimated staying) colleagues of a scientist’s noncolleague coauthors. Our results provide strong evidence coauthors generate significant spillover effects while colleagues do not. Increasing the number of a scientist’s coauthors by one on average increases his productivity by 2%. Our findings highlight the important of being exposed to a wider spectrum of ideas and knowledge in the production of science. Additionally, spillovers from colleagues remain insignificant across departments of different sizes or quality, and the estimated magnitude of coauthor spillovers is robust to different specifications and subsamples.

The first chapter analyzes the impact of social media on the spread of fake news when the search costs of consumers to find their favorite news are reduced by social media, and then the thesis studies the effects of price transparency in online markets in the second chapter. The third chapter analyzes a monopoly firm's optimal information revelation strategy and return policy when consumers can choose to either buy immediately without knowing their exact match value or search to learn the exact match value. The first chapter studies a search model to frame the recent debate about social media and fake news. Social media websites have not only helped consumers to find their favorite news but have also enabled fake news producers to spread their stories more easily and widely. This chapter proposes a search model to study the effect of a social media website on the spread of fake news, and its influence on consumer surplus. More specifically, we study the effect of a lower search cost induced by the social media website. We consider a setting where one unit of consumers search sequentially on the social media website to read at most one news. Assume consumers cannot distinguish between true and fake news, and fake news producers are able to produce stories that are good enough to attract consumers. We find that a lower search cost leads to more fake news consumption, but higher consumer surplus. The second chapter is motivated by the fact that the recent development of price comparison websites has led to increasing price transparency but no quality transparency, and it studies the effect of price transparency (without quality transparency) in a setting with competition among online sellers who compete on price and quality, by comparing situations where consumers learn no information and only price information before searching. We find that price transparency leads to lower prices, and a lower price is always linked to a lower quality. Price transparency also improves consumer surplus. However, price transparency sometimes results in excessive competition on price, if retailers can improve quality with relatively low quality but they did not do that due to the fierce price competition, the efficiency loss can be very large and lead to lower total welfare. The third chapter analyses a monopoly firm's optimal information revelation strategy and return policy when consumers can choose to either buy immediately without knowing their exact match value or search to learn the exact match value. By paying a return cost which is chosen by the firm, each consumer can return the product and obtain a refund. We find that if the firm is able to give consumers any form of match information, the firm will simply inform each consumer whether or not their match value is above a threshold. This strategy is used as a search deterrence tool, and consumers will just buy directly without knowing the exact match value. The optimal return policy is the one that makes no consumer choose to return the product. The consumer surplus is decreasing in search cost, whereas the total welfare is increasing in search cost. The total welfare reaches the socially efficient level when search cost is large enough, though the consumer surplus is zero in this situation.

Book excerpt: In the first chapter, I use the sports ticket market to examine the revenue gain of various sophisticated pricing strategies. Event ticket pricing is complex in part because many dimensions of ticket heterogeneity can be priced. While a growing number of event organizers adopt various sophisticated pricing schemes to price tickets, we know little about the gains and losses of these pricing strategies. I develop a model of Major League Baseball ticket demand that allows me to quantify the revenue gains from various sophisticated pricing schemes and determine which dimensions of ticket heterogeneity are most important for pricing. I estimate the demand model using an original dataset for daily single-game tickets sales in the 2017 Major League Baseball regular season. Given the estimated demand system, various counterfactual experiments are conducted. I find that seat quality is the most important dimension of ticket heterogeneity to price. In addition, I find that by implementing the optimal pricing strategy, the franchise in the study could increase its revenue by 14.49%, with a tradeoff of 13.96% loss in event attendance. The second chapter looks to social media activity and the insurance industry. Marketers distinguish three types of media: paid (e.g., advertising), owned (e.g., company website) and earned (e.g., publicity). The effects of paid media have been extensively covered in the literature. The effects of earned media, however, have received limited attention. We explore a novel data set of social media from Twitter, define a new measure of earned media and examine how earned media affects product sales. We analyze 21 months of weekly sales and social media activity data from a nationwide insurance company. We find that the earned media activity on the social network has a substantial impact on product sales. To be specific, each voluntary post advertising the endorsed company on Twitter is associated with 1.58 product sales increase. On average, the earned media activity on Twitter increases product sales by 0.08%. In total, the sales boosted by the earned media activity brought in $997,032 revenue and $29,991 profit to the company.
