Download or read book Secular Sermons written by Alan Musgrave and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do scientists do experiments? What do their experiments reveal? Scientifically, can we decide what to believe? Is evolution a scientific theory? Such apparently simple questions are brilliantly investigated by celebrated philosopher and professor Alan Musgrave in order to interrogate the worldviews we inhabit and their consequences. Musgrave brings to these questions an expansive historical knowledge, provoking readers to enter the now-discredited belief-systems of earlier ages in order to compare these with their own beliefs. Discursive, entertaining, and provocative, Secular Sermons contains fourteen essays by Musgrave New Zealand's leading contemporary philosopher examining the basic assumptions of science, religion, and mathematics. The book is an insightful introduction to the philosophical thought of Aristotle, Bacon, Copernicus, Galileo, Newton, Herschel, Darwin, and Einstein, among others. It puts modern science in a broader historical perspective and offers an entert
Book Synopsis The Preacher King by : Richard Lischer
Download or read book The Preacher King written by Richard Lischer and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020-01-29 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Preacher King investigates Martin Luther King Jr.'s religious development from a precocious "preacher's kid" in segregated Atlanta to the most influential America preacher and orator of the twentieth century. To give the most accurate and intimate portrait possible, Richard Lischer draws almost exclusively on King's unpublished sermons and speeches, as well as tape recordings, personal interviews, and even police surveillance reports. By returning to the raw sources, Lischer recaptures King's truest preaching voice and, consequently, something of the real King himself. He shows how as the son, grandson, and great-grandson of preachers, King early on absorbed the poetic cadences, traditions, and power of the pulpit, more profoundly influenced by his fellow African-American preachers than by Gandhi and the classical philosophers. Lischer also reveals a later phase of King's development that few of his biographers or critics have addressed: the prophetic rage with which he condemned American religious and political hypocrisy. During the last three years of his life, Lischer shows, King accused his country of genocide, warned of long hot summers in the ghettos, and called for a radical redistribution of wealth. 25 years after its initial publication, The Preacher King remains a critical study that captures the crucial aspect of Martin Luther King Jr.'s identity. Human, complex, and passionate, King was the consummate American preacher who never quit trying to reshape the moral and political character of the nation.

Download or read book Philosophy and Religion written by Augustus Hopkins Strong and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Philosophy and Religion: A Series of Addresses, Essays and Sermons Designed to Set Forth Great Truths in Popular Form This book is printed by way of testimony. It is a confession of faith - a long one indeed, yet none the less sincere. The author can say: "I believed, - therefore have I spoken." In this day when skepticism is so rife, and when even Christian teachers so frequently pride themselves that they believe, not so much, but so little, it seems to him that nothing is more needed than uncompromising assertion of faith in the existence of God, the world, and the soul. "When the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth ?" For himself, and for more than seven thousand others who have not bowed the knee to the Baal of brute force and impersonal law, the author desires to answer in the affirmative. The volume takes its title from the first Essay, - and the title is fairly descriptive of the book. It aims to present truth in popular form; most of the Essays contained in it have been written for public address; some of them date back to a time when the author's rhetoric was more exuberant than now, - for all this he makes no apology. He would fain hope that what Fox said of Burke's exuberance of fancy may be counted true of himself: "Reduce his language, withdraw his images, - and you will find that he is more wise than eloquent; you will have your full weight of metal, though you melt down the chasing." Yet, if any reader still demand abstract statement instead of the oratorical method, the author takes the liberty of referring him to the "Systematic Theology" of which this is the companion-volume, where he will find much of the same truth put in more philosophical form. It needs to be stated, however, that much of the present book is new, or at least has never before appeared in print. Download or read book A More Radical Gospel written by Gerhard O. Forde and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2017-01-01 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gerhard O. Forde has stood at the forefront of Lutheran thought for most of his career. This new collection of essays and sermons—many previously unpublished— makes Forde's powerful theological vision more widely available. The book aptly captures Forde's deep Lutheran commitment. Here he argues that the most important task of theology is to serve the proclamation of the gospel as discerned on the basis of the doctrine of justification by grace alone through faith alone. For Forde, the doctrine of justification is not one topic among other theological topics; rather, it is the criterion that guides "all theology and ministry. Throughout the book Forde applies this truth to issues of eschatology, authority, atonement, and ecumenism. Also included are seven insightful sermons that model the Lutheran approach to proclamation.
