Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Essay Towards a Bibliography: Of the Published Writings and Addresses of Woodrow Wilson, March 1917 to March 1921 This essay is a continuation of the bibliographies compiled by Mr. demons and Mr. Brown.f It is an attempt to list the books, addresses, messages, notes and state papers written and since published, during the period of Mr. Wilson's second ad ministration, March 4, 1917 to March 4, 1921. It is hoped that all of the important items are included and that a sufficient number of citations are given to make them accessible to all readers. State papers, although they emanated from the State Department and often bore signature of the Secretary of State but whose composition may be attributed to Mr. Wilson, have been freely listed and have been included in their chronological order. Proclamations have been listed separately only when their interest seemed to warrant. All proclamations have been listed collectively under the year, as in the United States statutes at large. Executive orders have not been listed. These may be found in the Official Bulletin. The following are the chief sources from which citations are made: 1. Volumes of collected addresses, papers, etc., published by the regular publishing houses. 2. Government documents. 3. Official bulletin. 4. Congressional record. 5. Periodicals listed in Poole's Index. Citations from newspapers have not been generally made. The imprint "Government Printing Office" is to be understood wherever the place of publication is given as Washington. The Library of Congress has an analytical subject index on cards to the speeches and addresses of President Wilson practically complete from January 1, 1913, to June 30, 1920. My thanks are due to Mr. H. H. B. Meyer, Chief Bibliographer of the Library of Congress, and to Mr. Joseph P. Tumulty, for their invaluable advice and assistance. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1948. In the first essay of this collection, Lovejoy reflects on the nature, methods, and difficulties of the historiography of ideas. He maps out recurring phenomena in the history of ideas, which the essays illustrate. One phenomenon is the presence and influence of the same presuppositions or other operative "ideas" in very diverse provinces of thought and in different periods. Another is the role of semantic transitions and confusions, of shifts and of ambiguities in the meanings of terms, in the history of thought and taste. A third phenomenon is the internal tensions or waverings in the mind of almost every individual writer—sometimes discernible even in a single writing or on a single page—arising from conflicting ideas or incongruous propensities of feeling or taste to which the writer is susceptible. These essays do not contribute to metaphysical and epistemological questions; they are primarily historical.

Book excerpt: George Orwell set out ‘to make political writing into an art’, and to a wide extent this aim shaped the future of English literature – his descriptions of authoritarian regimes helped to form a new vocabulary that is fundamental to understanding totalitarianism. While 1984 and Animal Farm are amongst the most popular classic novels in the English language, this new series of Orwell’s essays seeks to bring a wider selection of his writing on politics and literature to a new readership. In Why I Write, the first in the Orwell’s Essays series, Orwell describes his journey to becoming a writer, and his movement from writing poems to short stories to the essays, fiction and non-fiction we remember him for. He also discusses what he sees as the ‘four great motives for writing’ – ‘sheer egoism’, ‘aesthetic enthusiasm’, ‘historical impulse’ and ‘political purpose’ – and considers the importance of keeping these in balance. Why I Write is a unique opportunity to look into Orwell’s mind, and it grants the reader an entirely different vantage point from which to consider the rest of the great writer’s oeuvre. 'A writer who can – and must – be rediscovered with every age.' — Irish Times

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives students an answer to the question, “What does my professor want from this essay?” In lively, direct language, it explains the process of creating “a clearly-written argument, based on evidence, about the meaning, power, or structure of a literary work.” Using a single poem by William Carlos Williams as the basis for the process of writing a paper about a piece of literature, it walks students through the processes of reading, brainstorming, researching secondary sources, gathering evidence, and composing and editing the paper. Writing Essays About Literature is designed to strengthen argumentation skills and deepen understanding of the relationships between the reader, the author, the text, and critical interpretations. Its lessons about clarity, precision, and the importance of providing evidence will have wide relevance for student writers.
