Book excerpt: Being thin is everything. When you're the fat girl, no one wants to be your friend - or at least it seems that way. Growing up the fat girl is tough. Your girlfriends look down on you, boys ignore you, family gives you guilt. Its no fun. Rachel is trying to find a way to be thin, healthy and happy. Will she find a way? Join as Rachel she grows, learns about herself, and how to be happy from the inside out on her own terms. Rachel Boatfield, the pseudonymous author of Escaping the Fat Girl, has struggled with weight issues and overeating her entire life, starting around age 12. She wrote the book she wishes she could have read as a teen before she ever got on the yo-yo dieting insanity train. The author's goals are to help as many people as she can, of all ages, to deal with food and weight issues. To this day, Rachel considers herself a recovering compulsive eater. When Rachel had children, she was desperate to avoid passing her food issues on to them. All around her, she saw pre-teen young women feeling insecure and beginning to gain weight and diet. All the hard-won lessons the author has learned for herself over the past 30 years about the real source of health are squeezed into three years of high school in the book for young Rachel. Because weight and self-image are such deeply personal and emotional issues for the author, and due to a range of health concerns, she chooses to remain anonymous. Even imagining being in the public eye becomes a source of extreme stress and pressure. Instead, Rachel chooses to concentrate on her family and on her continued health, and hopes you can connect with her through your love of this book. If this book could prevent just one person from entering into a lifetime struggle with weight and self-image, she says, or help one person step off the crazy train, then this book will have been worth all the effort. Rachel currently plans to write a second "how she did it" book, too, in an effort to transform her lifelong struggles into help for others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not only the story of a colossus of a woman living in Kansas, Fat Girl, Terrestrial is also a meditation on God, treachery, and blind love. In Kingdom Come, Kansas, a town from which children once mysteriously disappeared, there lives a giant woman. Wallis Armstrong is not a pituitary mutant or a person battling a rare medical condition; she’s just an improbably large woman ill at ease in a world built for shrimps. Paradoxically, Wallis builds miniatures of crime scenes, and her specialty is staged suicides. She constructed her first diorama as a child when a boy in her fourth-grade class went suddenly missing. Wallis’s brother, Obie, believes the only explanation for his sister’s amplitude is that she is the incarnation of God on Earth, and he is her one true ardent disciple. Until he too disappears. Kellie Wells’s story of Wallis’s odyssey through this tight-fitting world is a churlish meditation on the existence and nature of God as well as an exploration of the treachery of childhood and the destructive nature of the most blindly abiding kind of love: that of a love-struck brother for a big sister, a disciple for an unwilling prophet, and a bone-weary god for a savage and disappointing flock.

Book excerpt: Being a teenage girl is challenging enough, with a new body, attitude, and hormonal changes and all. But being a FAT teenage girl starting middle school hit different. My first doctors visit set the pace of how I would start to feel about myself. Loving myself and my body was something I struggled with for a long time. I wish I knew then to love myself first. I kept a journal, hoarded with all of my experiences of friends, boys, doctors visits, and learning to accept my BIG body. Shopping hit different, love hit different, and overall confidence in myself hit different. Kids can be so cruel. The way the world tells you to view yourself can have an impact on you no matter how hard you to try to escape it. I can only tell my story and hope that there is someone out there that does not have to go through this alone.

As you watch Lizzie navigate fraught relationships—with food, men, girlfriends, her parents and even with herself—you’ll want to grab a friend and say: ‘Whoa. This. Exactly.’” —Washington Post Growing up in the suburban hell of Misery Saga (a.k.a. Mississauga), Lizzie has never liked the way she looks—even though her best friend Mel says she’s the pretty one. She starts dating guys online, but she’s afraid to send pictures, even when her skinny friend China does her makeup: she knows no one would want her if they could really see her. So she starts to lose. With punishing drive, she counts almonds consumed, miles logged, pounds dropped. She fights her way into coveted dresses. She grows up and gets thin, navigating double-edged validation from her mother, her friends, her husband, her reflection in the mirror. But no matter how much she loses, will she ever see herself as anything other than a fat girl? In her brilliant, hilarious, and at times shocking debut, Mona Awad skewers the body image-obsessed culture that tells women they have no value outside their physical appearance. Brilliant, hilarious, and heartbreaking, 13 Ways of Looking at a Fat Girl introduces a vital new voice in fiction. Book excerpt: Teen-aged girls hate their bodies and diet obsessively, or so we hear. News stories and reports of survey research often claim that as many as three girls in five are on a diet at any given time, and they grimly suggest that many are “at risk” for eating disorders. But how much can we believe these frightening stories? What do teenagers mean when they say they are dieting? Anthropologist Mimi Nichter spent three years interviewing middle school and high school girls—lower-middle to middle class, white, black, and Latina—about their feelings concerning appearance, their eating habits, and dieting. In Fat Talk, she tells us what the girls told her, and explores the influence of peers, family, and the media on girls’ sense of self. Letting girls speak for themselves, she gives us the human side of survey statistics. Most of the white girls in her study disliked something about their bodies and knew all too well that they did not look like the envied, hated “perfect girl.” But they did not diet so much as talk about dieting. Nichter wryly argues—in fact some of the girls as much as tell her—that “fat talk” is a kind of social ritual among friends, a way of being, or creating solidarity. It allows the girls to show that they are concerned about their weight, but it lessens the urgency to do anything about it, other than diet from breakfast to lunch. Nichter concludes that if anything, girls are watching their weight and what they eat, as well as trying to get some exercise and eat “healthfully” in a way that sounds much less disturbing than stories about the epidemic of eating disorders among American girls. Black girls, Nichter learned, escape the weight obsession and the “fat talk” that is so pervasive among white girls. The African-American girls she talked with were much more satisfied with their bodies than were the white girls. For them, beauty was a matter of projecting attitude (“’tude”) and moving with confidence and style. Fat Talk takes the reader into the lives of girls as daughters, providing insights into how parents talk to their teenagers about their changing bodies. The black girls admired their mothers’ strength; the white girls described their mothers’ own “fat talk,” their fathers’ uncomfortable teasing, and the way they and their mothers sometimes dieted together to escape the family “curse”—flabby thighs, ample hips. Moving beyond negative stereotypes of mother–daughter relationships, Nichter sensitively examines the issues and struggles that mothers face in bringing up their daughters, particularly in relation to body image, and considers how they can help their daughters move beyond rigid and stereotyped images of ideal beauty.

Book excerpt: Liza Palmer will have readers cheering as she explores friendship, true love, and self-acceptance in this "engaging and poignant" (Jennifer Weiner) novel. Everyone seems to be getting on with their lives except Maggie. At twenty-seven, she's still serving coffee at Joe's while her friends are getting married, having babies, and thriving in their careers. And now Olivia, Maggie's best friend since grade school, is getting married too. The man in Maggie's life? Well there isn't one, except the guy she has a crush on, Domenic, who works with her at the coffee shop. Oh, and her dog, Solo (the name says it all). When Olivia comes to town and asks Maggie to be her maid of honor, Maggie is thrilled... but she can't help comparing herself to the new and "improved" Olivia. Way back then, they befriended each other because they both struggled with their weight. Now grown up, Maggie is still shopping in the "women's section" while Olivia went and had gastric-bypass surgery in search of the elusive size 2. But as the wedding nears, Olivia's seemingly perfect life starts to unravel, and Maggie realizes that happiness might not be tied to a number on the scale. In this wonderful novel, Liza Palmer is both witty and wise, giving a voice to women everywhere who have ever wished they could stop obsessing... and start living. "Kudos to Liza Palmer." -- People "Palmer's likable characters and snappy dialogue make this novel stand out from the crowd." -- Booklist "In a word: genuine." -- Herald Sun
