Book excerpt: Farming in cities and small spaces is becoming increasingly popular, but it has its challenges. City Farming addresses the problems the urban farmer might face and turns them into creative solutions. It assists the new grower to gain expert understanding of how to create a production urban farm, as well as helping established farmers to troubleshoot and discover new ways to bring their space into greater harmony and production. From the perspective of a holistic gardener, growing plants and raising livestock are covered as well as integrated approaches, which bring together the whole farming system in a small space to produce high yields with minimal energy and effort. The content is organised by themes of importance to urban farmers‚ sun and heat, water usage, seasonal production, spatial planning, soil quality and usage, propagation and breeding, pests and diseases, farming under time constraints, sustainability and community initiatives. These are all discussed within the context of urban farming and include common issues and strategies like microclimates in built-up areas, natural and organic approaches, water harvesting, toxic land, roof gardening, converting ornamental gardens to productive edible gardens, municipal regulations, vertical gardening, aquaponics, composting methods, livestock suitability in limited space, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) schemes, permaculture in small spaces, community gardens and trade & barter schemes. Each chapter unfolds a piece the story of The Micro Farm Project that provides an overview of the theme, and then discusses the crop and livestock considerations relating to the theme of the chapter in the form of the challenges they present and practical solutions to the problems such as lack of space, high population density, poor soil quality, planning restrictions etc. Case studies giving examples of different methods used within urban farming from different regions throughout the world are included. City Farming is a beautifully illustrated source that can be valuable to both beginners and more experienced urban farmers. 5m Books

Book excerpt: Once regarded by society and his fellow farmers as a controversial oddball, Sepp Holzer is now recognised as an important agricultural innovator whose influential permaculture ideas have spread beyond his home country of Austria to bring him international acclaim. Holzer himself is modest about his ideas which he regards simply as "Nature's wisdom" and is happy to share his knowledge and experience. In high demand for seminars and lectures, Holzer has aroused a new interest in farming and has inspired even non-farmers to take over old farms and to manage them based on his ideas of permaculture. Holzer' s aim is to develop and promote farmers who are able to live in harmony with nature, to recognise its cycles and symbioses and to treat their land, soil and fellow living creatures with respect. He believes in the urgent need for farmers to re-learn how to produce good natural foods rather than mere nutrients. The roots of Holzer' s permaculture extend back to his childhood when he first became an observer of nature. Through observation and experiment, Holzer came to realise that Creation is perfect and that nature is always right. He realised that the key to agricultural success was diversity based on natural symbioses and mutual promotion of plant varieties rather than monotonous monoculture. Holzer recognised the important relationship between animals and plants and how each affects the other and put this knowledge to use on his farm. Holzer points out that every plant and animal has its purpose in creation and that problems only arise when humans try to steer their fates in the wrong direction. Over the years, the farm at Krameterhof has played host to students and scientists alike, keen to learn from Holzer' s example and Holzer himself has become involved at an international level working in development aid in Colombia, Costa Rica and Africa.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My first exposure to Muslims was in 2005 in Morocco. I enjoyed my visit and was surprised by the Berbers' hospitality. I was fascinated by the eagerness of Muslims to discuss God. While sharing personal stories was important, our conversations always concluded with talking about God. Discussions about our faiths was the foremost topic of my conversations with Muslims. Over the years, I have compared the teachings of Islam with the Christian Scriptures. I have found the narratives differing in detail and concepts conflicting in perspective. These theological differences confirm that Islam and Christianity do not worship the same God. For example, the Quran teaches that Allah commanded angels to bow down to Adam at creation. Satan refused, and Allah banished him to the earth (Qu.7:11-13). According to the Bible, Yhwh would never command angels to bow down to man, for only Yhwh is worthy of worship. For an angel to bow down to man is idolatry. I have observed many debates between Muslims and Christians. Muslim debaters seldom stay on the agreed topic. Instead, they divert from the subject to ridicule and debase Christianity as foolishness. I have found that while Muslims ask difficult questions of Christianity, they never ask the same questions of Islam. Islam and Christianity Contrasted will seek answers to those questions from the early Islamic sources and compare them with the teachings of the Bible. The Quran, early hadiths, Islamic history, and four established translations of the Bible will be consulted. I hope that through Islam and Christianity Contrasted, both Muslims and Christians will have a deeper understanding of one another’s faith.

Book excerpt: With today's management systems, the cost of making hay far exceeds its value to grazing businesses. Studies have shown that winter feed costs are the largest single factor limiting the profitability for most livestock operations. In virtually every area of the USA, year-around grazing--without hay--is possible, yet many graziers continue making hay. Kick the Hay Habit: A Practical Guide To Year-Around Grazing by Jim Gerrish will show you how much it really costs to produce a ton of hay. He explains how to use nature as your guide for low-cost winter grazing; how to conduct a pasture inventory; how to select the optimal breeding and birthing seasons; how to custom design your own winter forage system; and how to make the transition from hay feeding to grazing. Wouldn't you rather spend your time monitoring pastures and moving livestock than making hay? Both the beginner and the experienced grazier will benefit from Kick the Hay Habit. Gerrish shares his personal experiences as a grazier in Missouri and Idaho as well as insights he gained as a researcher at the University of Missouri's Forage Systems Research Center. As a grazing consultant he has helped farmers and ranchers throughout North and South America. Wouldn't you rather Kick the Hay Habit, dump the heavy metal, and start collecting the profits?

For lifelong alternative medicine practitioner Carrie Eastman, applying these methods to her goat herd was just common sense. All living things are made up of electrical energy. Learn how to harness this energy to work with your goats in a way that is convenient, inexpensive, and safe for your herd. The Energetic Goat provides step-by-step instruction on the basic techniques, including common variations, as well as guidance on how to adapt other techniques to suit your personal preferences. Newcomers to alternative veterinary medicine will find the many photographs, diagrams, and sample case histories particularly useful, while veteran practitioners will discover new tricks and techniques to add to their repertoire, from the never-before-in-print human reflex point chart (used for surrogate testing) to the cross-reference chart of common goat health problems and popular treatments. This book also includes a timeline for transitioning your animals from conventional to holistic herd management, including tips on minerals, nutrition, and dealing with parasites. If you¿re ready to see your herd thrive without the use of harmful chemicals, just keep an open mind, examine the success stories of the techniques, and explore how these tests can be used to improve your own herd, right now, with whatever philosophy you follow.
