Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents up-to-date and unifying formulations for treating dynamics of different types of mechanical systems with variable mass. The starting point is overview of the continuum mechanics relations of balance and jump for open systems from which extended Lagrange and Hamiltonian formulations are derived. Corresponding approaches are stated at the level of analytical mechanics with emphasis on systems with a position-dependent mass and at the level of structural mechanics. Special emphasis is laid upon axially moving structures like belts and chains and on pipes with an axial flow of fluid. Constitutive relations in the dynamics of systems with variable mass are studied with particular reference to modeling of multi-component mixtures. The dynamics of machines with a variable mass are treated in detail and conservation laws and the stability of motion will be analyzed. Novel finite element formulations for open systems in coupled fluid and structural dynamics are presented.

Book excerpt: The assumption of small changes in the inertia parameters has been used to derive approximate rotational equations of motion for arbitrary spinning spacecraft in the small angle and rate regime. Complex representations are introduced to define the rate and attitude errors produced by applied disturbances, and analytical solutions are obtained for the steady spinning mode and for the spin-up and despin mode. Solutions for the steady spinning mode consider both the uncontrolled and the controlled spacecraft motion for characteristic disturbance. These disturbances include initial errors, externally applied torques, and instantaneous and periodic mass motions within the spacecraft. The errors induced by the disturbances are described by the error component time histories and by vector traces of the complex error representations. Upper bounds of the errors are developed for the uncontrolled motion, and the required control techniques and control systems are examined for the controlled motion. Solutions for the spin-up and despin mode consider extensible spacecraft modules connected by struts or cables. Fuel consumption relations are derived for several extension techniques, and optimization of the extension techniques is shown to yield appreciable fuel savings. Comparisons of the analytical solutions and exact solutions obtained by numerical integration of the complete equations of motion are found to yield excellent agreement, and the applications of the approximate solution are illustrated for a manned orbital research laboratory and a large spinning space station.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black & white print. University Physics is a three-volume collection that meets the scope and sequence requirements for two- and three-semester calculus-based physics courses. Volume 1 covers mechanics, sound, oscillations, and waves. Volume 2 covers thermodynamics, electricity, and magnetism. Volume 3 covers optics and modern physics. This textbook emphasizes connections between theory and application, making physics concepts interesting and accessible to students while maintaining the mathematical rigor inherent in the subject. Frequent, strong examples focus on how to approach a problem, how to work with the equations, and how to check and generalize the result.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The motion of a body under translation and rotation is examined from the point of view of a system of particles having relative motion between particles, leading to a varying configuration, and undergoing a change in mass with time, where constraints may be imposed on certain numbers of particles. Such a procedure accounts for every conceivable configuration of the system and the possibility of omitting terms in the equations of motion are minimized. The equations can be regrouped to indicate contributions of the more familiar terms, such as rigid body, jet ejection, center of mass shift, and relative motion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the problem of dynamics of bodies with time-variable mass and moment of inertia. Mass addition and mass separation from the body are treated. Both aspects of mass variation, continual and discontinual, are considered. Dynamic properties of the body are obtained applying principles of classical dynamics and also analytical mechanics. Advantages and disadvantages of both approaches are discussed. Dynamics of constant body is adopted, and the characteristics of the mass variation of the body is included. Special attention is given to the influence of the reactive force and the reactive torque. The vibration of the body with variable mass is presented. One and two degrees of freedom oscillators with variable mass are discussed. Rotors and the Van der Pol oscillator with variable mass are displayed. The chaotic motion of bodies with variable mass is discussed too. To support learning, some solved practical problems are included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I began to write this book, I originally had in mind the needs of university students in their first year. May aim was to keep the mathematics simple. No advanced techniques are used and there are no complicated applications. The emphasis is on an understanding of the basic ideas and problems which require expertise but do not contribute to this understanding are not discussed. How ever, the presentation is more sophisticated than might be considered appropri ate for someone with no previous knowledge of the subject so that, although it is developed from the beginning, some previous acquaintance with the elements of the subject would be an advantage. In addition, some familiarity with element ary calculus is assumed but not with the elementary theory of differential equations, although knowledge of the latter would again be an advantage. It is my opinion that mechanics is best introduced through the motion of a particle, with rigid body problems left until the subject is more fully developed. However, some experienced mathematicians consider that no introduction is complete without a discussion of rigid body mechanics. Conventional accounts of the subject invariably include such a discussion, but with the problems restricted to two-dimensional ones in the books which claim to be elementary. The mechanics of rigid bodies is therefore included but there is no separate discussion of the theory in two dimensions.

Frank, he received the Nobel Prize in 1958 for the explanation of the Cherenkov effect. This book contains a commented selection of his most important contributions to the physical literature and essays on his contemporaries - Mandelstam, Einstein, Landau, and Bohr - as well as his contributions to Pugwash conferences. About a third of the selections originally appeared in Russian and are, to our knowledge, for the first time now available to Western readers. This volume includes a preface by Sir Rudolf Peierls, a biography compiled by Tamm's former students, V.Ya. Frenkel and B.M. Bolotovskii, and a complete bibliography.
