Book Synopsis Equal Opportunity Peacekeeping by : Sabrina Karim
Download or read book Equal Opportunity Peacekeeping written by Sabrina Karim and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent developments such as Sweden's' Feminist Foreign Policy, the "Hillary Doctrine," and the integration of women into combat roles in the U.S. have propelled gender equality to the forefront of international politics. The UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations, however, has been integrating gender equality into peacekeeping missions for nearly two decades as part of the women, peace and security agenda that has been most clearly articulated in UNSC Resolution 1325. To what extent have peacekeeping operations achieved gender equality in peacekeeping operations and been vehicles for promoting gender equality in post-conflict states? While there have been major improvements related to women's participation and protection, there is still much left to be desired. Sabrina Karim and Kyle Beardsley argue that gender power imbalances between the sexes and among genders place restrictions on the participation of women in peacekeeping missions. Specifically, discrimination, a relegation of women to safe spaces, and sexual exploitation, abuse, harassment, and violence (SEAHV) continue to threaten progress on gender equality. Using unique cross-national data on sex-disaggregated participation of peacekeepers and on the allegations of SEAHV, as well as original data from the UN Mission in Liberia, the authors examine the origins and consequences of these challenges. Karim and Beardsley also identify and examine how increasing the representation of women in peacekeeping forces, and even more importantly through enhancing a more holistic value for "equal opportunity," can enable peacekeeping operations to overcome the challenges posed by power imbalances and be more of an example of and vehicle for gender equality globally.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today’s workplace can be challenging, particularly for Christians aspiring to do great work and avoid the conflicts it can present. Equal Opportunity Destroyer exposes the issue of how women mistreat other women in the workplace. It is a selection of occurrences and observations and how the author navigated them in her own experience. Women must do better to encourage and accept each other in the workplace. Everyone has something great to contribute. Greater responsibility falls on women in leadership to use their position to help all employees become successful. The hope of this book is for women to recognize the potential in other women and support it, not destroy it.

Download or read book Equal Employment Opportunity written by DIANE Publishing Company and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 1996-07 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Departments of the Interior, Agriculture, Navy, and State have made progress in improving women and minority representation in their workforces. However, some groups are still underrepresented on an overall basis and often underrepresented to a greater degree in key jobs. Also, although the numbers of women and minorities in key jobs increased across all white-collar grade and management levels, as of 1992 these groups continued to be less well represented in the higher grades at agencies. Furthermore, the four agencies' milder affirmative employment planning program analyses did not completely address each of the eight required program elements set forth by The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission's (EEOC) Management Directive 714. For example, none of the four completely analyzed its recruitment and hiring, promotions, or separations program elements, all of which are needed to identify the basic causes of underrepresentation. Finally, neither the Office of Personnel Management nor EEOC provided the oversight needed to ensure that agencies' affirmative employment program could effectively correct imbalances in their workforces.

Book excerpt: #1 INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER • “A landmark manifesto" (The New York Times) that's a revelatory, inspiring call to action and a blueprint for individual growth that will empower women around the world to achieve their full potential. In her famed TED talk, Sheryl Sandberg described how women unintentionally hold themselves back in their careers. Her talk, which has been viewed more than eleven million times, encouraged women to “sit at the table,” seek challenges, take risks, and pursue their goals with gusto. Lean In continues that conversation, combining personal anecdotes, hard data, and compelling research to change the conversation from what women can’t do to what they can. Sandberg, COO of Meta (previously called Facebook) from 2008-2022, provides practical advice on negotiation techniques, mentorship, and building a satisfying career. She describes specific steps women can take to combine professional achievement with personal fulfillment, and demonstrates how men can benefit by supporting women both in the workplace and at home.
