Book Synopsis Refiguring Les Années Noires by : Kathy Comfort
Download or read book Refiguring Les Années Noires written by Kathy Comfort and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-11-16 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through a close reading of seven literary memoirs of the Nazi Occupation of France, Refiguring Les Années Noires: Literary Representations of the Nazi Occupation shows how the memory of the period has been shaped by political and social factors. An interdisciplinary study incorporating trauma theory, history, and folklore studies, this book examines representations of the Occupation by a diverse group of writers ranging from a female Resistance fighter to one of the first French Roma novelists. The methodological diversity of the volume brings to the fore each author’s unique perspective and demonstrates that their works are at once historically and artistically significant. Above all, this book gives voice to groups whose experiences in occupied France have largely been forgotten.
Book Synopsis The Private Collection of Edgar Degas by : Julie A. Steiner
Download or read book The Private Collection of Edgar Degas written by Julie A. Steiner and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 1997 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The art collection assembled by Edgar Degas was remarkable not only for its quality, size, and depth but also for its revelation of Degas's artistic affinities. He acquired great numbers of works by the nineteenth-century French masters Ingres, Delacroix, and Daumier; he bought (or bartered his own pictures for) art by many of his contemporaries, particularly Manet, Cezanne, Gauguin, and Cassatt; and he acquired works by a wide range of other artists, from eminent to little known. The extent of Degas's holdings was not recognized until after his death, when the collection came up for auction in Paris in 1918 and, in what was called the sale of the century, was widely dispersed." "Extensive research has made it possible to "reassemble" that collection in book form. This summary catalogue contains information on the more than five thousand works owned by Degas. For each work catalogued the entry includes, to the extent possible: a description with medium and dimensions; provenance information about Degas's acquisition and ownership of the work; information pertaining to the sale of the work in 1918 (or its disposal earlier), including the purchaser, purchase price, and other data; the current location; selected references; and an illustration. In a concordance, collection sale lot numbers are listed with their corresponding summary catalogue numbers." "This catalogue and its companion volume of essays are published in conjunction with the exhibition "The Private Collection of Edgar Degas," held at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, from October 1, 1997, to January 11, 1998."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Synopsis Chatting with Henri Matisse by : Henri Matisse
Download or read book Chatting with Henri Matisse written by Henri Matisse and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2013-08-15 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1941 the Swiss art critic Pierre Courthion interviewed Henri Matisse while the artist was in bed recovering from a serious operation. It was an extensive interview, seen at the time as a vital assessment of Matisse's career and set to be published by Albert Skira's then newly established Swiss press. After months of complicated discussions between Courthion and Matisse, and just weeks before the book was to come out--the artist even had approved the cover design--Matisse suddenly refused its publication. A typescript of the interview now resides in Courthion's papers at the Getty Research Institute. This rich conversation, conducted during the Nazi occupation of France, is published for the first time in this volume, where it appears both in English translation and in the original French version. Matisse unravels memories of his youth and his life as a bohemian student in Gustave Moreau's atelier. He recounts his experience with collectors, including Albert C. Barnes. He discusses fame, writers, musicians, politicians, and, most fascinatingly, his travels. Chatting with Henri Matisse, introduced by Serge Guilbaut, contains a preface by Claude Duthuit, Matisse's grandson, and essays by Yve-Alain Bois and Laurence Bertrand Dorleac. The book includes unpublished correspondence and other original documents related to Courthion's interview and abounds with details about avant-garde life, tactics, and artistic creativity in the first half of the twentieth century.

Book Synopsis Critical Empathy as Teacher Education Reform by : Thomas A. Lucey
Download or read book Critical Empathy as Teacher Education Reform written by Thomas A. Lucey and published by IAP. This book was released on 2024-08-01 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers teacher training in social studies and finds it lacking a sense of genuine critical empathy, a sense of shared humanity. Current teacher education generally defines critical thinking as processes which examine topics in greater complexity, but does not prepare candidates to study, confront, and challenge existing social structures. Often in response to state mandates, teacher education programs rate and interpret candidate quality based on their conformance with standards and defined outcomes. There is a lack of tolerance for alternative views that may substantially challenge the often-oppressive hierarchical system of authority in our world. This volume which includes contributions from social studies educators in the U.S., Canada, and Australia offers the thinking and practice of teacher education scholars who embrace the idea and practices of empathy in the social studies classroom. Defined as “the ability to understand and share the feelings of another”, direct emphasis on empathy represents a vehicle for developing a sense of mutual understanding and questioning of economic and social systems. Developing teacher candidates who comprehend and experience the feelings of diverse education stakeholders provides opportunities for harmonious teaching and learning environments situated in the lives of learners.
