Download or read book Beam Measurement - Proceedings Of The Joint Us-cern-japan-russia School On Particle Accelerators written by Stuart Turner and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1999-05-31 with total page 739 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume comprises the proceedings of the 8th Joint School on accelerator physics. On this occasion, the US, CERN, Japan and Russia Particle Accelerator Schools collaborated to present the topic of “Beam Measurements”. The aim was to provide an introduction to the principles of beam dynamics and measurements in circular particle accelerators. This was achieved by a series of lectures under the headings of “single-particle dynamics”, “multi-particle dynamics” and then “beam measurements”, along with practical courses on feedback and signal processing, maps and (no) simulations, practical diagnostic measurements, and spectrum and network analyzers. The resulting proceedings represent a unique summary of the currently available knowledge on beam measurements applied to circular particle accelerators.

Book Synopsis Reviews of Accelerator Science and Technology - Volume 3 by : Alex Chao
Download or read book Reviews of Accelerator Science and Technology - Volume 3 written by Alex Chao and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2010 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each generation yielded growths in brightness and time resolution that were unimaginable just a few years earlier. In particular, the progression from the 3rd to 4th generation is a true revolution; the peak brilliance of coherent soft and hard x-rays has increased by 7-10 orders of magnitude, and the image resolution has reached the angstrom (1 [symbol] = 10-10 meters) and femto-second (1 fs = 10-15 second) scales. These impressive capabilities have fostered fundamental scientific advances and led to an explosion of numerous possibilities in many important research areas including material science, chemistry, molecular biology and the life sciences. Even more remarkably, this field of photon source invention and development shows no signs of slowing down. Studies have already been started on the next generation of x-ray sources, which would have a time resolution in the atto-second (1 as = 10-18 second) regime, comparable to the time of electron motion inside atoms.
Book Synopsis Radio Frequency Station-beam Dynamics Interaction in Circular Accelerators by : Themistoklis Mastoridis
Download or read book Radio Frequency Station-beam Dynamics Interaction in Circular Accelerators written by Themistoklis Mastoridis and published by Stanford University. This book was released on 2005 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The longitudinal beam dynamics in circular accelerators is mainly defined by the interaction of the beam current with the accelerating Radio Frequency (RF) stations. For stable operation, Low Level RF (LLRF) feedback systems are employed to reduce coherent instabilities and regulate the accelerating voltage. The LLRF system design has implications for the dynamics and stability of the closed-loop RF systems as well as for the particle beam, and is very sensitive to the operating range of accelerator currents and energies. Stability of the RF loop and the beam are necessary conditions for reliable machine operation. This dissertation describes theoretical formalisms and models that determine the longitudinal beam dynamics based on the LLRF implementation, time domain simulations that capture the dynamic behavior of the RF station-beam interaction, and measurements from the Positron-Electron Project (PEP-II) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) that validate the models and simulations. These models and simulations are structured to capture the technical characteristics of the system (noise contributions, non-linear elements, and more). As such, they provide useful results and insight for the development and design of future LLRF feedback systems. They also provide the opportunity to study diverse longitudinal beam dynamics effects such as coupled-bunch impedance driven instabilities and single bunch longitudinal emittance growth. Coupled-bunch instabilities and RF station power were the performance limiting effects for PEP-II. The sensitivity of the instabilities to individual LLRF parameters, the effectiveness of alternative operational algorithms, and the possible tradeoffs between RF loop and beam stability were studied. New algorithms were implemented, with significant performance improvement leading to a world record current during the last PEP-II run of 3212 mA for the Low Energy Ring. Longitudinal beam emittance growth due to RF noise is a major concern for LHC. Simulations studies and measurements were conducted that clearly show the correlation between RF noise and longitudinal bunch emittance, identify the major LLRF noise contributions, and determine the RF component dominating this effect. With these results, LHC upgrades and alternative algorithms are evaluated to reduce longitudinal emittance growth during operations. The applications of this work are described with regard to future machines and analysis of new technical implementations, as well as to possible future work which would continue the directions of this dissertation.

Book Synopsis Engines Of Discovery: A Century Of Particle Accelerators (Revised And Expanded Edition) by : Edmund Wilson
Download or read book Engines Of Discovery: A Century Of Particle Accelerators (Revised And Expanded Edition) written by Edmund Wilson and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2014-04-17 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of Engines of Discovery celebrated in words, images and anecdotes the accelerators and their constructors that culminated in the discovery of the Higgs boson. But even before the Higgs was discovered, before the champagne corks popped and while the television producers brushed up their quantum mechanics, a new wave of enthusiasm for accelerators to be applied for more practical purposes was gaining momentum. Almost all fields of human endeavour will be enhanced by this trend: energy conservation, medical diagnostics and treatment, national security, as well as industrial processing. Accelerators have been used most spectacularly to reveal the structure of the complex molecules that determine our metabolism and life. For every accelerator chasing the Higgs, there are now ten thousand serving other purposes. It is high time to move from abstract mathematics and philosophy to the practical needs of humankind. It is the aim of this revised and expanded edition to describe this revolution in a manner which will attract the young, not only to apply their curiosity to the building blocks of matter but to help them contribute to the improvement of the quality of life itself on this planet. As always, the authors have tried to avoid lengthy mathematical description. In describing a field which reaches out to almost all of today's cutting edge technology, some detailed explanation cannot be avoided but this has been confined to sidebars. References guide experts to move on to the journal Reviews of Accelerator Science and Technology and other publications for more information. But first we would urge every young physicist, teacher, journalist and politician to read this book.
