Firstly Atmospheric Trace Species which is primarily concerned with the construction of a COSPAR International Reference Atmosphere (CIRA -Volume 3) for trace constituents of the middle atmosphere and lower thermosphere. Possible reference models and data were presented on a number of trace species including background stratospheric aerosols, polar stratospheric clouds, methane, nitrous oxide, ozone, water vapor, thermospheric nitric oxide, molecular oxygen airglow emissions, atomic oxygen and atomic hydrogen. Chapter 2 entitled Equatorial Thermosphere and Aeronomy: Models and San Marco Satellite/Ground Based observations reflects the advances made recently in equatorial aeronomy and demonstrate the promise of coordinated measurements using satellite measurements in conjunction with sounding rockets and ground-based experiments. The final chapter, Coupling of Dynamical, Radiative and Chemical Processes in the Middle Atmosphere examines the ozone hole and related atmospheric chemistry and modelling.

Book excerpt: The sources, distributions, and transformation of organic compounds in the solar system are active study areas as a means to provide information about the evolution of the solar system and the possibilities of life elsewhere in the universe. There are many organic synthesis processes, however, and ambiguity surrounds the relative effectiveness of these processes in explaining the distribution of organic compounds in the solar system. As a consequence, NASA directed the NRC to determine what processes account for the reduced carbon compounds found throughout the solar system and to examine how planetary exploration can advance understanding of this central issue. This report presents a discussion of the chemistry of carbon; an analysis of the formation, modification, and preservation of organic compounds in the solar system; and an assessment of research opportunities and strategies for enhancing our understanding of organic material in the solar system.

Book excerpt: The fifty-seven papers presented in this volume give a complete overview of the knowledge to date in radiation biology. The accessibility of the unique radiation environment in space and the increasing involvement of human beings in space missions have initiated substantial research activities in the various fields of space radiation biology dealing with radiation detection and measurement; biological mechanisms of the hard component of cosmic radiation; impact of space environment on radiobiological processes and also radiation protection issues. Besides offering opportunities for radiobiological experiments in space, the current space exploration programme even requires the collection of radiobiological data in space and at accelerators as baseline information for estimating radiation risks to humans on future space missions and for establishing radiation standards for manned spaceflight.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each time a space vehicle visits another world it runs the risk of forever changing that extraterrestrial environment. We are surrounded on Earth by a mélange of different microorganisms, and if some of these hitchhike onboard a space mission, they could contaminate and start colonies on a different planet. Such an occurrence would irrevocably alter the nature of that world, compromise all future scientific exploration of the body, and possibly damage any extant life on it. And by inadvertently carrying exotic organisms back to Earth on our spacecraft, we risk the release of biohazardous materials into our own ecosystem. Such concerns were recognized by scientists even before the 1957 launch of Sputnik. This book presents the history of planetary protection by tracing the responses to the above concerns on NASA's missions to the Moon, Mars, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, and many smaller bodies of our solar system. The book relates the extensive efforts put forth by NASA to plan operations and prepare space vehicles that return exemplary science without contaminating the biospheres of other worlds or our own. As Cassie Conley, NASA's Planetary Protection Officer, has said, "The public can be proud of the way that NASA has responded to planetary protection concerns, with its efforts to act responsibly, communicate openly, and address effectively the potential for contamination." Humans have a powerful urge to explore the unknown, but to protect irreplaceable environments, NASA has committed to conducting space exploration in a manner that is protective of the bodies visited, as well as of our own planet.
