Knowledge of these mechanisms is a vital component in performing a risk assessment. Volume I will deal with the physical and chemical properties of a material and how these influence the degradation and dissipating reactions. Volume 2 will address the transport of the chemical as it moves through the environment from the source to the final sink.

Book excerpt: This 5-volume set allows you to assess the health and environmental effects of chemicals by determining the routes of exposure of the chemical to sensitive organisms. Environmental Fate and Exposure of Organic Chemicals provides relevant facts on how individual chemicals behave in the environment and how humans and environmental organisms are exposed to the chemicals during their production, rise, transport, and disposal. Each chemical is prepared by one of the best-known organizations in environmental fate and exposure and is peer-reviewed by a panel of expert scientists. The information on each chemical includes all experimental values and references for physical properties, all chemical fate studies, and all available monitoring data and interpretative summaries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers valuable insights into the latest concepts and findings from epidemiologic, clinical and basic studies in the burgeoning area of early-life environmental exposure and diseases. The book is divided into five parts, starting with an overview of environmental exposure measurement and evaluation, followed by a review of the effects of exposure to various substances like tobacco smoke, pesticides and metals as well as stress on offspring’s health. It then discusses the developmental origins of a range of childhood diseases that affect growth, neural development and the immune system, and highlights the importance of longitudinal studies that measure exposure at potentially sensitive time points during childhood. It also provides up-to-date evidence of the intergenerational/transgenerational effects of early-life environmental exposure, especially via genetic and epigenetic pathways. Allowing readers to gain a thorough understanding of the predominating aspects of early-life environmental exposure and diseases, the book also provides a basis for developing environmental and health policies that could have wide and long-term impacts on human health.

Book excerpt: In order to assess the health and environmental effects of a chemical, you need to determine the exposure of the chemical to sensitive organisms as well as to assess the likely effects. The chemicals in Volume V of the Handbook of Environmental Fate and Exposure Data for Organic Chemicals set are mostly solvents and cover many of the natural products and hydrochlorofluorocarbons and hydrofluorocarbons being considered as replacements for harmful chlorinated solvents and chlorofluorocarbons. The chemicals are listed in alphabetical order by their most easily recognized names. A cumulative index allows you to look up each chemical by chemical name synonym, Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) number, and chemical formula. Like all of the volumes in the series, this new volume details how individual chemicals are released, transported, and degraded in the environment, as well as how they are exposed to humans and environmental organisms. Features Provides useful information for hazardous waste cleanup Helps you to make exposure assessments Provides workplace exposure and ambient monitoring data as well as detection in foods Includes information on environmental persistence and transport Includes highly reliable data prepared by a well-known firm in environmental fate

This book was released on 2009-03-31 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book contains the contributions at the NATO Study Institute on Exposure and Risk Assessment of Chemical Pollution – Contemporary Methodology, which took place in Sofia – Borovetz, Bulgaria, July 1–10, 2008. Rapid advances in mathematics, computer science and molecular biology and chemistry have lead to the development in of a new branch of toxicology called Computational Toxicology. This emerging field is addressing the estimation and prediction of exposure risk and effects of chemicals based on experimental data, measured concentration and biological mechanisms and computational models of biological systems. Mathematical models are also being used to predict the fate and transport of substances in the environment. Because this area is still in its infancy, there has been limited application from governmental agencies to regulating controllable processes, such as registration of new chemicals, determination of estimated exposure and risk based limits and maximum acceptable concentrations in different compartments of the environment – ambient air, waters, soil and food products. However, this is soon to change as the ability to collect, analyze and interpret the required information is becoming increasingly more efficient and cost effective. Full implementation of the new processes have to involve education on both part of the experimentalists who are generating the data and the models, and the risk assessors who will use them to better protect human health and the environment.

Book excerpt: The amount of hazardous waste in the United States has been estimated at 275 million metric tons in licensed sites alone. Is the health of Americans at risk from exposure to this toxic material? This volume, the first of several on environmental epidemiology, reviews the available evidence and makes recommendations for filling gaps in data and improving health assessments. The book explores: Whether researchers can infer health hazards from available data. The results of substantial state and federal programs on hazardous waste dangers. The book presents the results of studies of hazardous wastes in the air, water, soil, and food and examines the potential of biological markers in health risk assessment. The data and recommendations in this volume will be of immediate use to toxicologists, environmental health professionals, epidemiologists, and other biologists.
