Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a range of entropy methods for diffusive PDEs devised by many researchers in the course of the past few decades, which allow us to understand the qualitative behavior of solutions to diffusive equations (and Markov diffusion processes). Applications include the large-time asymptotics of solutions, the derivation of convex Sobolev inequalities, the existence and uniqueness of weak solutions, and the analysis of discrete and geometric structures of the PDEs. The purpose of the book is to provide readers an introduction to selected entropy methods that can be found in the research literature. In order to highlight the core concepts, the results are not stated in the widest generality and most of the arguments are only formal (in the sense that the functional setting is not specified or sufficient regularity is supposed). The text is also suitable for advanced master and PhD students and could serve as a textbook for special courses and seminars.

Book excerpt: This book is a product of the experience of the authors in teaching partial differential equations to students of mathematics, physics, and engineering over a period of 20 years. Our goal in writing it has been to introduce the subject with precise and rigorous analysis on the one hand, and interesting and significant applications on the other. The starting level of the book is at the first-year graduate level in a U.S. university. Previous experience with partial differential equations is not required, but the use of classical analysis to find solutions of specific problems is not emphasized. From that perspective our treatment is decidedly theoretical. We have avoided abstraction and full generality in many situations, however. Our plan has been to introduce fundamental ideas in relatively simple situations and to show their impact on relevant applications. The student is then, we feel, well prepared to fight through more specialized treatises. There are parts of the exposition that require Lebesgue integration, distributions and Fourier transforms, and Sobolev spaces. We have included a long appendix, Chapter 8, giving precise statements of all results used. This may be thought of as an introduction to these topics. The reader who is not familiar with these subjects may refer to parts of Chapter 8 as needed or become somewhat familiar with them as prerequisite and treat Chapter 8 as Chapter O.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of a NATO/London Mathematical Society Advanced Study Institute held in Oxford from 25 July - 7 August 1982. The institute concerned the theory and applications of systems of nonlinear partial differential equations, with emphasis on techniques appropriate to systems of more than one equation. Most of the lecturers and participants were analysts specializing in partial differential equations, but also present were a number of numerical analysts, workers in mechanics, and other applied mathematicians. The organizing committee for the institute was J.M. Ball (Heriot-Watt), T.B. Benjamin (Oxford), J. Carr (Heriot-Watt), C.M. Dafermos (Brown), S. Hildebrandt (Bonn) and J.S. pym (Sheffield) . The programme of the institute consisted of a number of courses of expository lectures, together with special sessions on different topics. It is a pleasure to thank all the lecturers for the care they took in the preparation of their talks, and S.S. Antman, A.J. Chorin, J.K. Hale and J.E. Marsden for the organization of their special sessions. The institute was made possible by financial support from NATO, the London Mathematical Society, the u.S. Army Research Office, the u.S. Army European Research Office, and the u.S. National Science Foundation. The lectures were held in the Mathematical Institute of the University of Oxford, and residential accommodation was provided at Hertford College.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this Handbook is to acquaint the reader with the current status of the theory of evolutionary partial differential equations, and with some of its applications. Evolutionary partial differential equations made their first appearance in the 18th century, in the endeavor to understand the motion of fluids and other continuous media. The active research effort over the span of two centuries, combined with the wide variety of physical phenomena that had to be explained, has resulted in an enormous body of literature. Any attempt to produce a comprehensive survey would be futile. The aim here is to collect review articles, written by leading experts, which will highlight the present and expected future directions of development of the field. The emphasis will be on nonlinear equations, which pose the most challenging problems today. . Volume I of this Handbook does focus on the abstract theory of evolutionary equations. . Volume 2 considers more concrete problems relating to specific applications. . Together they provide a panorama of this amazingly complex and rapidly developing branch of mathematics.

Book excerpt: Vector Fields with Applications to Thermodynamics and Irreversibility is part of the series "Mathematics and Physics for Science and Technology", which combines rigorous mathematics with general physical principles to model practical engineering systems with a detailed derivation and interpretation of results. Volume V presents the mathematical theory of partial differential equations and methods of solution satisfying initial and boundary conditions, and includes applications to: acoustic, elastic, water, electromagnetic and other waves; the diffusion of heat, mass and electricity; and their interactions. This is the first book of the volume. The second book of volume V continues this book on thermodynamics, focusing on the equation of state and energy transfer processes including adiabatic, isothermal, isobaric and isochoric. These are applied to thermodynamic cycles, like the Carnot, Atkinson, Stirling and Barber-Brayton cycles, that are used in thermal devices, including refrigerators, heat pumps, and piston, jet and rocket engines. In connection with jet propulsion, adiabatic flows and normal and oblique shock waves in free space and nozzles with variable cross-section are considered. The equations of fluid mechanics are derived for compressible two-phase flow in the presence of shear and bulk viscosity, thermal conduction and mass diffusion. The thermodynamic cycles are illustrated by detailed calculations modelling the operation of piston, turbojet and rocket engines in various ambient conditions, ranging from sea level, the atmosphere of the earth at altitude and vacuum of space, for the propulsion of land, sea, air and space vehicles. The book is intended for graduate students and engineers working with mathematical models and can be applied to problems in mechanical, aerospace, electrical and other branches of engineering dealing with advanced technology, and also in the physical sciences and applied mathematics. This book: Simultaneously covers rigorous mathematics, general physical principles and engineering applications with practical interest Provides interpretation of results with the help of illustrations Includes detailed proofs of all results L.M.B.C. Campos was chair professor and the Coordinator of the Scientific Area of Applied and Aerospace Mechanics in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and also the director (and founder) of the Center for Aeronautical and Space Science and Technology until retirement in 2020. L.A.R.Vilela is currently completing an Integrated Master's degree in Aerospace Engineering at Institute Superior Tecnico (1ST) of Lisbon University.

Book excerpt: Now available in English for the first time,?Physics and Partial Differential Equations, Volume I?bridges physics and applied mathematics in a manner that is easily accessible to readers with an undergraduate-level background in these disciplines.? Readers who are more familiar with mathematics than physics will discover the connection between various physical and mechanical disciplines and their related mathematical models, which are described by partial differential equations (PDEs). The authors establish the fundamental equations for fields such as electrodynamics; fluid dynamics, magnetohydrodynamics, and reacting fluid dynamics; elastic, thermoelastic, and viscoelastic mechanics; the kinetic theory of gases; special relativity; and quantum mechanics. Readers who are more familiar with physics than mathematics will benefit from in-depth explanations of how PDEs work as effective mathematical tools to more clearly express and present the basic concepts of physics. The book describes the mathematical structures and features of these PDEs, including the types and basic characteristics of the equations, the behavior of solutions, and some commonly used approaches to solving PDEs. Each chapter can be read independently and includes exercises and references.?
