Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Enhancing Entrepreneurial Excellence is a fascinating and valuable treatise on how entrepreneurs achieve the transformation of an idea into a product that is successful in the marketplace. It is practical but well-grounded in the academic research. The book explains the tools that entrepreneurs need to be successful and displays the passion of the author, Robert Baron, to help more entrepreneurs become "engines of change" in order to improve human life. The book is a must read for all scholars of entrepreneurship and aspiring entrepreneurs.' – Michael A. Hitt, Texas A&M University, US The field of entrepreneurship has long pondered the following question: Why, despite their high levels of motivation, effort and commitment, do so many entrepreneurs fail? This innovative volume tackles the complex question of entrepreneurial success, identifying the essential tools necessary for converting ideas into reality and offering concrete means for acquiring and strengthening those tools. Though entrepreneurial success or failure can be partly attributed to external considerations such as market fluctuations and competitor activity, Robert A. Baron argues that the individual entrepreneur is often crucial in determining whether an idea succeeds or fails. Using current, concrete data, the author demonstrates the critical importance of the entrepreneur's skills, knowledge and other personal resources to the outcome of his or her entrepreneurial undertakings. Written in a clear and vibrant style, this groundbreaking book offers both a detailed breakdown of the personal attributes that foster entrepreneurial success as well as helpful suggestions for achieving and enhancing those same attributes in one's own search for entrepreneurial excellence. Professors and students of entrepreneurship, as well as their peers in other innovation-based fields such as engineering and the sciences, will find this book an invaluable resource for both the study and practice of successful entrepreneurship.

Book excerpt: The role that small firms and entrepreneurship play in economic development has been particularly contentious. Joseph Schumpeter (1911), in his early work, argued that through a process of "creative destruction," small and new firms would serve as agents of change and a catalyst for innovation and growth. But, he later rescinded this view, instead concluding that large corporations were the engines of growth. Just as it seemed that a consensus had emerged among scholars and policy makers that small business was at best superfluous and at worst a drag on growth and economic development, David Birch provided evidence that, in fact, small firms were the engines of job creation. The early skepticism of challenge to Birch's findings revolved around methodology and measurement. However, a wave of subsequent studies by different authors, spanning different time periods, sectors, and even countries, generally confirmed Birch's original findings-for most developed countries and in most time periods, small business has provided most of the job creation.

Book Synopsis Knowledge-Driven Entrepreneurship by : Thomas Andersson
Download or read book Knowledge-Driven Entrepreneurship written by Thomas Andersson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-12-01 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Springer book series Innovation, Technology, and Knowledge Management was launched in March 2008 as a forum and intellectual, scholarly “podium” for global/local, transdisciplinary, transsectoral, public–private, and leading/“bleeding” -edge ideas, theories, and perspectives on these topics. The book series is accompanied by the Springer Journal of the Knowledge Economy, which was launched in 2009 with the same editorial leadership. The series showcases provocative views that diverge from the current “conv- tional wisdom,” that are properly grounded in theory and practice, and that consider 1 2 the concepts of robust competitiveness, sustainable entrepreneurship, and demo- 3 cratic capitalism, central to its philosophy and objectives. More specifically, the aim of this series is to highlight emerging research and practice at the dynamic intersection of these fields, where individuals, organizations, industries, regions, and nations are harnessing creativity and invention to achieve and sustain growth. Books that are part of the series explore the impact of innovation at the “macro” (economies, markets), “meso” (industries, firms), and “micro” levels. (teams, indi viduals), drawing from such related disciplines as finance, organizational psychology, research and development, science policy, information systems, and 1 We define sustainable entrepreneurship as the creation of viable, profitable, and scalable firms. Such firms engender the formation of self-replicating and mutually enhancing innovation networks and knowledge clusters (innovation ecosystems), leading toward robust competitiveness (E.G. Carayannis, International Journal of Innovation and Regional Development, 1(3), 235–254, 2009).

Book Synopsis ECKM2014-Proceedings of the 15th European conference on Knowledge Management by : Carla Vivas
Download or read book ECKM2014-Proceedings of the 15th European conference on Knowledge Management written by Carla Vivas and published by Academic Conferences and Publishing International. This book was released on 2014-10-01 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world economy in which we are living poses challenges that lead to a realization that 'more of the same' will be difficult to sustain. This provides an illustration that, in order to create new or modified knowledge practices, strengthen customer relationships and thus positively influence customer satisfaction, organizations must be flexible in configuring (combining) knowledge and knowledge structures in a way that is appropriate for delivering value to the customer. It must simultaneously develop effective strategies for updating the knowledge of its staff members necessary for underpinning the creation and delivery of appropriate knowledge services. Thus, unlearning (forgetting) becomes a critical means for organizational success. The ECKM community of scholars has already initiated dialogue that links its particular strengths to innovation issues. This conference aims to further that dialogue by attracting leading edge work that leverages the ECKM community's in-depth understanding of learning and unlearning to better understand knowledge management. Our aim is to stimulate breakthrough research streams linking learning, unlearning and knowledge management. How can organizations tailor, use, and extend techniques and tools from knowledge management for improving their business practices and processes? Building upon existing work on knowledge management (KM) and organizational learning, the conference will promote interdisciplinary approaches from computer science and information systems, business, management and organization science as well as cognitive science. Emphasis will be put on systematic learning from experience, KM tools and KM success factors. A special interest belongs to knowledge management initiatives which are lightweight (i.e., do not place considerable additional burden on users and KM experts), allow an incremental adoption (i.e., do not require large up-front investment before any return of investment is at least visible), and are flexible regarding frequent changes in experts and topics. Continuing the success of the ECKM conference series since 2000, the 2015 conference will provide an international communication forum bringing together academia and industry for discussing the progress made and addressing the challenges faced by continuous learning in knowledge-intensive organizations.
Book Synopsis The Professional Knowledge Economy by : P. Tordoir
Download or read book The Professional Knowledge Economy written by P. Tordoir and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1995-10-31 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge is the great fifth production factor in our economy, besides capital, labour, land, and entrepreneurship. Perhaps it is the most precious of the five factors, because it takes so much effort and money to keep it well-nourished. Perhaps it is the most strategic of the five factors, because we depend on it to develop business, the economy, and the world at large in a balanced and sustainable direction. Knowledge is certainly one of the least understood factors and one of the hardest to grasp. This book concerns the largest pool of knowledge, which is professional knowledge. This form of knowledge, albeit being very close to business practice, is nonetheless least understood of all. Economists have tried to grasp the knowledge factor, measuring and assessing it in terms of the pools of R&D-expenditures, patented innovations, licences, and other forms of knowledge that can be documented. The pool of professional knowledge is not among these, because it is tacit. It can only exist in our head; it is intrinsically tied to people --the professionals. Professional knowledge is the articulation of scientific and documented knowledge, and the individual experience and dexterity of individuals. It is for this reason that it is so hard to grasp; while for this very same reason, it is so close to the life of business, to the shopfloor of our advanced economies.
