Book Synopsis Enriched by Catastrophe by : Michelle Hébert Boyd

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: December 6, 1917, dawned clear and full of promise for Halifax, Nova Scotia. As Canada's main enbarkation point for the trenches of World War I, the old harbour city was alive with activity and was enjoying the prosperity that comes with war-time commerce and a healthy injection of military spending. Shaking off decades of decline, the people of Halifax were feeling optimistic about their city's future. This was about to change. Shortly after nine o'clock that morning, two ships - one carrying 2,653,115 kilograms of munitions - collided in the harbour, causing the world's largest human-caused explosion prior to Hiroshima. Halifax's North End was almost completely destroyed. When social workers arrived to assist in the massive relief effort they had to practise their skills within the context of Halifax's prevailing class structures, where, traditionally, well-off volunteers passed judgment on their poorer neighbours and took great care not to improve the conditions of people beyond their station in society. This book reflects on the lessons the profession of social work took from its efforts to rebuild the lives of Haligonians and on the lessons still to be learned from that experience. Book jacket.

Book Synopsis Catastrophe Theoretic Semantics by : Wolfgang Wildgen
Download or read book Catastrophe Theoretic Semantics written by Wolfgang Wildgen and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1982-01-01 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: René Thom, the famous French mathematician and founder of catastrophe theory, considered linguistics an exemplary field for the application of his general morphology. It is surprising that physicists, chemists, biologists, psychologists and sociologists are all engaged in the field of catastrophe theory, but that there has been almost no echo from linguistics. Meanwhile linguistics has evolved in the direction of René Thom's intuitions about an integrated science of language and it has become a necessary task to review, update and elaborate the proposals made by Thom and to embed them in the framework of modern semantic theory.

Book Synopsis A Philosophy of Catastrophes or a Catastrophe of Philosophies by : Jacques Richard
Download or read book A Philosophy of Catastrophes or a Catastrophe of Philosophies written by Jacques Richard and published by Ethics International Press. This book was released on 2024-03-29 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many currents in philosophical writings, that deal with today's serious ecological problems and the catastrophes they engender. The aim of this book is to show the diversity of these currents and to judge them on the basis of their ability to provide us with concrete tools for getting out of the ecological impasse in which we find ourselves today, notably the urgency to find new types of ecological and human management. Some of these currents are hopeless: they only offer the prospect of a mental adaptation to these catastrophes, or invite us to leave planet earth and take refuge on other planets. Others, of a cynical bent, openly support the forces that have led to the current situation of 'ecological bankruptcy', arguing that the same economic system that has led us to the current ecological impasse will be able to provide us with miraculous technical solutions for our salvation. Still others, the vast majority, are so cut off from the realities of today's economic world, and in particular from the problems of practical business management, that their very general views offer very few operational solutions for changing the situation. And yet there are some philosophies, admittedly very few in number, that seem appropriate to the radical transformation that is needed of the management of capitalist firms: the philosophy of catastrophes is not necessarily synonymous with a catastrophe of philosophies. The author draws on philosophy , economics, accounting, and history to address what many consider humanity’s most serious challenge.
Book Synopsis A Paradise Built in Hell by : Rebecca Solnit
Download or read book A Paradise Built in Hell written by Rebecca Solnit and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2010-08-31 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of Men Explain Things to Me explores the moments of altruism and generosity that arise in the aftermath of disaster Why is it that in the aftermath of a disaster? whether manmade or natural?people suddenly become altruistic, resourceful, and brave? What makes the newfound communities and purpose many find in the ruins and crises after disaster so joyous? And what does this joy reveal about ordinarily unmet social desires and possibilities? In A Paradise Built in Hell, award-winning author Rebecca Solnit explores these phenomena, looking at major calamities from the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco through the 1917 explosion that tore up Halifax, Nova Scotia, the 1985 Mexico City earthquake, 9/11, and Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. She examines how disaster throws people into a temporary utopia of changed states of mind and social possibilities, as well as looking at the cost of the widespread myths and rarer real cases of social deterioration during crisis. This is a timely and important book from an acclaimed author whose work consistently locates unseen patterns and meanings in broad cultural histories.

Book Synopsis Formal Theories in International Relations by : Michael Nicholson
Download or read book Formal Theories in International Relations written by Michael Nicholson and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1989 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1989, gives a critical account of formal international relations theory. That formal and mathematical methods can be applied to the study of international relations is often regarded with surprise, but the author demonstrates not only how these methods give insights into problems such as deterrence or arms races but also that the increase in the power of explanatory tools depends on the more rigourous development of theory along these lines. Mathematical methods have been applied to the study of international behaviour since the pioneering work of Lewis Fry Richardson in the 1920s and 1930s. However, it was in the post Second World War period that they became widespread. Dr Nicholson discusses the application of such methods as the theory of games to problems of relationships between states, catastrophe theory to the study of initiation of violence, and probability theory to the question of the probability of nuclear war.

Download or read book Our Final Hour written by Martin Rees and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2009-03-17 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A scientist known for unraveling the complexities of the universe over millions of years, Sir Martin Rees now warns that humankind is potentially the maker of its own demise -- and that of the cosmos. Though the twenty-first century could be the critical era in which life on Earth spreads beyond our solar system, it is just as likely that we have endangered the future of the entire universe. With clarity and precision, Rees maps out the ways technology could destroy our species and thereby foreclose the potential of a living universe whose evolution has just begun. Rees boldly forecasts the startling risks that stem from our accelerating rate of technological advances. We could be wiped out by lethal "engineered" airborne viruses, or by rogue nano-machines that replicate catastrophically. Experiments that crash together atomic nuclei could start a chain reaction that erodes all atoms of Earth, or could even tear the fabric of space itself. Through malign intent or by mistake, a single event could trigger global disaster. Though we can never completely safeguard our future, increased regulation and inspection can help us to prevent catastrophe. Rees's vision of the infinite future that we have put at risk -- a cosmos more vast and diverse than any of us has ever imagined -- is both a work of stunning scientific originality and a humanistic clarion call on behalf of the future of life.
Book Synopsis Catastrophes and Lesser Calamities by : Tony Hallam
Download or read book Catastrophes and Lesser Calamities written by Tony Hallam and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2005-07-14 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about the dramatic periods in the Earth's history called mass extinctions - short periods (by geological standards) when life nearly died out on Earth. The most famous is the mass extinction that happened about 65 million years ago, and that caused the death of the dinosaurs. But that was not the worst mass extinction: that honour goes to the extinction at the end of the Permian Period, about 250 million years ago, when over 90% of life is thought to have become extinct. What caused these catastrophes? Was it the effects of a massive meteorite impact? There is evidence for such an impact about 65 million years ago. Or was it a period of massive volcanic activity? There is evidence in the rocks of huge lava flows at periods that match several of the mass extinctions. Was it something to do with climate change and sea level? Or was it a combination of some or all of these? The question has been haunting geologists for a number of years, and it forms one of the most exciting areas of research in geology today. In this book, Tony Hallam, a distinguished geologist and writer, looks at all the different theories and also what the study of mass extinctions might tell us about the future. If climate change is a key factor, we may well, as some scientists have suggested, be in a period of mass extinction of our own making.
