Book excerpt: Thirty-seven parents or primary caregivers of students receiving special education services in three school districts in central Florida participated in the study. Before and after the workshops, participants completed a three-part survey in which they gave demographic information, responded to 50 multiple choice test questions related to the IEP process, and answered 10 open-ended questions related to their involvement in their children's education. Participants also completed an evaluation at each of the workshops indicating which of the workshop's components influenced their decision to participate. Finally, participants' children's teachers completed the Parent/Family Involvement Index (P/FII) before and after participating in the workshops. The P/FII is a measure of parent involvement in their children's special education services as perceived by their children's teachers. Following data collection, quantitative statistical analysis was completed using descriptive statistics to examine if TENFEE's components supported the participation of the targeted population to the workshops. A Paired Sample t-test was calculated to evaluate any differences in participants' IEP knowledge survey test scores before and after the workshops as well as differences in teachers' P/FII scores before and after the workshops. Multiple Regressions were conducted to determine if participants' demographic characteristics influenced IEP knowledge survey test scores and/or P/FII scores.

Book excerpt: Parents of children with disabilities need accurate information to help them provide tailored services and supports to their families. This is especially true for immigrant Latino families who tend to experience poor overall health and who tend to avoid formal services and supports. Based on input gathered from Latino parents of children with disabilities, a three-module curriculum, "Empowering Families," was developed. Following a cultural appropriateness review of the curriculum and associated measurement instruments, revisions were made to the content and presentation procedure. This was followed by a field test of the curriculum with two groups of Latino parents/caregivers of children with development disabilities. Results from the training sessions with both groups indicate that the training resulted in moderate knowledge gains and that self-reported healthy lifestyle behaviors experienced minimal improvement. Overall health status was essentially unchanged. Participants rated the content very highly in terms of cultural appropriateness and usefulness.

The intended culminating project is a PowerPoint presentation which presents special education services in a detailed and easy to understand manner geared towards parents of students in special education and school staff. The PowerPoint presentation elaborates on the description of each special education service, the various professionals who determine the need for the service, the student who benefits from the service, and how the service goes into effect. The information included on the PowerPoint slides was retrieved from the California Department of Education website. Research shows that Hispanic parents benefit to a great extent from special education informational sessions which are designed in a supportive manner (Gershwin, Milian, & Lopez, 2009). Hispanic families have reported receiving emotional support from the Hispanic group and benefited from having v access to critical sources of information (Gershwin, Milian, & Lopez, 2009). Similar research with culturally and linguistically diverse groups has reported stronger and more effective special education advocacy resulting from parents attaining greater knowledge of parental rights, IEP content, and interacting with other parents of children with disabilities (Trainor, 2010). Providing opportunities for Hispanic parents to develop essential resources, in conjunction with being lead by other individuals in their native language strengthens overall resources parents bring with them to their partnership with school professionals (Bourdieu, 1986).
