Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories New and Old: Typical American and English Tales Two facts about the short-story are very signifi cant: it is probably the oldest literary form, and it was the latest in point of time to receive exact definition of its purpose and scope and full unfold ing of its artistic and dramatic resources. The first act means that the short-story is a vital and not an artificial form of literature, and fits itself easily and almost instinctively to certain impulses and interests of men; the second fact the fact that the short story had to wait for the insight and skill of men of the genius of Poe, Hawthorne, Stevenson, Kipling, and Maupassant means that as a literary form the short-story ranks with the highest and most exact ing forms of art. The epic had immense popularity, and for centuries took the place of the history, the story of adventure, the novel, the magazine, and the newspaper; but the epic, by reason of the breadth and volume of human action which it records, has been less exacting in the matter of structure and. Book excerpt: Excerpt from More English Fairy Tales Then as to using tales in Lowland Scotch, whereat a Saturday Reviewer, whose identity and fatherland were not difficult to guess, was so shocked. Scots a dialect of English! Scots tales the same as English! Horror and Philistinism! Was the Reviewer's outcry. Matter of fact, is my reply, which will only confirm him, I fear, in his convictions. Yet I appeal to him, why make a difference between tales told on different sides of the Border? A tale told in Durham or Cumberland in a dialect which only Dr. Murray could distinguish from Lowland Scotch, would on all hands be allowed to be English. The same tale told a few miles farther North, why should we refuse it the same qualification? A tale in Henderson is English: why not a tale in Chambers, the majority of whose tales are to be found also south of the Tweed? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Australian Tales, and Sketches From Real Life Most of the following tales and sketches have appeared in the Sydney Mail; and I have good reason to believe that they have been favourably received by thousands of subscribers to that influential newspaper. In publishing them in a volume, I am yielding to the persuasion of many kind friends, who have expressed their belief that they Will be well received, and be useful. I have spent much time in altering and improving all the articles; and they Will be fresh to my old readers. The fact of the articles having appeared in the columns of the Sydney Mail, will be a sufficient guarantee to parents, that they need not scruple to place the volume in the hands of their children. I will only add, that there is nothing controversial or see tarian in it; and I have used my utmost efforts to make it both amusing and instructive. English readers will find many phases of Australian life depicted for which I claim this merit, that their accuracy may be relied on. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories and Sketches Some years since circumstances caused me to spend the summer months in a farming district, a few miles from the village of E., and it was there I met with Terry Dolan. He had a short time previous come over from Ireland, and was engaged as a sort of chore boy by Mr. L., in whose family I resided during my stay in the neighborhood. This Terry was the oddest being with whom I ever chanced to meet. Would that I could describe him! - but most of us, I believe, occasionally meet with people, whom we find to be indescribable, and Terry was one of those. He called himself sixteen years of age; but, excepting that he was low of stature, you would about as soon have taken him for sixty as sixteen. His countenance looked anything but youthful, and there was altogether a sort of queer, ancient look about him which caused him to appear very remarkable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Little Sunbeam's Picture-Book: Tales and Sketches In the first place, I have to say that many of the stories are not quite so nice as they might have been and this is the reason for their being so: in order that such of you young folk as are not very quick at reading may be able to make out all the words in this book, I have written the whole work in very short words. In fact, there is but one of more than two syllables in all the pages that follow, and only those words which have the simplest meaning have been used by me. The adoption of this plan has, of course, very much increased my labours and my difficulties. Nor is this all in order that children who are as yet unable to read may take some pleasure in the book, I have put into it a great many pictures, and that has obliged me to make my tales very short. Barrie Hen the English publishers read A Win dow in Thrums in manuscript they thought it unbearably sad and begged me to alter the end. They warned me that the public do not like sad books. Well, the older I grow and the sadder the things I see, the more do I wish my books to be bright and hopeful, but an author may not always interfere with his story, and if I had altered the end of A Window in Thrums I think I should never have had any more respect for myself. It is a sadder book to me than it can ever be to anyone else. I see Jess at her window looking for the son who never came back as no other can see her, and I knew that unless I brought him back in time the book would be a pain to me all my days, but the thing had to be done. The folk-lore tale has had its origin among plain, artless people, in many respects only grown up children, and its survival to our times is simply evidence of these people having regarded it as being too excellent for them to allow it to be lost. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Hundred Merry Tales: The Earliest English Jest-Book Here may be some, who will attach value and interest to the singular old volume, now first reproduced in exact imitation of the original, on account of the casual mention of it by Shakespear in one of his plays; but I hope and think that many more will welcome its appearance on another and higher ground, and will become of opinion that, where a solitary copy of such a relic as the earliest est-book in the national tongue of England is only to be found in a foreign repository, and is liable to destruction at any moment, the survival, not of its mere substance alone, but of its very identity, in the shape of a facsimile, is one of those minor duties, which we owe to sue ceeding generations. In the good former days, a gentleman who did his friends and the public the favour of reprinting a curious old book, was re garded as a sort of benefactor by a few who knew a little about the matter, and by the greater number, who knew nothing, he was considered a person of elegant tastes and of liberal disposi tion for he usually engaged in the speculation on his own responsibility. The case is now altogether altered, and any one who proposes to give to the world a new edition of an old book or tract, is in peril of being received as a Frenchman receives the news of his third child, unless he can make out a pretty strong plea for his proceeding. He must bring his justification in his hand. The burden of proof is upon him. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
