Book excerpt: The sixteen essays in this second volume of Harvard English Studies explore and reevaluate the work of twentieth-century writers and critics from Joyce and James to Iris Murdoch and Mailer, from Yeats and Eliot to critics and poets of the present generation. Part I, "Writers and Critics," includes among other essays an exploration of erotic imagination in Dubliners and a study of Dickensian motifs in Murdoch's London novels. Other articles deal with the present standing of Yeats's and Eliot's poetry, the prosodies of free verse, and the role of the writer in modern fiction. Part II, "Twentieth Century Valuations Reconsidered" assesses some of the influential twentieth-century critical positions on Shakespeare, the pastoral, Donne, the metaphysical poets, Milton, Pope, and Wordsworth. Distinguished contributors include Josephine Miles, Frank Kermode, F. R. Leavis, and Christopher Ricks.

Book Synopsis The Image of the English Gentleman in Twentieth-Century Literature by : Dr Christine Berberich
Download or read book The Image of the English Gentleman in Twentieth-Century Literature written by Dr Christine Berberich and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-04-28 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies of the English gentleman have tended to focus mainly on the nineteenth century, encouraging the implicit assumption that this influential literary trope has less resonance for twentieth-century literature and culture. Christine Berberich challenges this notion by showing that the English gentleman has proven to be a remarkably adaptable and relevant ideal that continues to influence not only literature but other forms of representation, including the media and advertising industries. Focusing on Siegfried Sassoon, Anthony Powell, Evelyn Waugh and Kazuo Ishiguro, whose presentations of the gentlemanly ideal are analysed in their specific cultural, historical, and sociological contexts, Berberich pays particular attention to the role of nostalgia and its relationship to 'Englishness'. Though 'Englishness' and by extension the English gentleman continue to be linked to depictions of England as the green and pleasant land of imagined bygone days, Berberich counterbalances this perception by showing that the figure of the English gentleman is the medium through which these authors and many of their contemporaries critique the shifting mores of contemporary society. Twentieth-century depictions of the gentleman thus have much to tell us about rapidly changing conceptions of national, class, and gender identity.

Book Synopsis Looking at Shakespeare by : Dennis Kennedy
Download or read book Looking at Shakespeare written by Dennis Kennedy and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-12-20 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most studies of the performance of Shakespeare's work concentrate on how the text has been played and what meanings have been conveyed through acting and interpretive directing. Dennis Kennedy demonstrates that much of audience response is determined by the visual representation, which is normally more immediate and direct than the aural conveyance of a text. Ranging widely over productions in Britain, Europe, Japan and North America, Kennedy gives a thorough account of the main scenographic movements of the century, investigating how the visual relates to Shakespeare on the stage. The second edition of this acclaimed history includes a new chapter on Shakespeare performance in the 1990s, bringing the story up to date by drawing on examples from a wide international field. There are more than twenty new illustrations, some of them in colour (bringing the total number of illustrations to almost 200), and previous references have been updated.
