Sir Alfred Ewing, the veteran of English engineering, in his address as President of the British Association for the Advancement of Science in 1932, said: More and more does mechanical production take the place of human ef fort, not only in manufactures, but in all our tasks, even the primitive task of tilling the ground. So man finds this, that while he is enriched with a multitude of possessions and possibilities beyond his dreams, he is in great measure deprived of one inestimable blessing, the necessity of toil.sake of cheapening the unit we develop output on a gi gantic scale. Almost automatically the machine delivers a stream of articles in the creation of which the workman has had little part. He has lost the joy of craftsmanship, the old satisfaction in something accomplished through the conscientious exercise of care and skill. In many cases unemployment is thrust upon him, an unemployment that is more saddening than any drudgery. Other observers of English society have come to the same conclusion. Professor G. M. Trevelyan, in his 'british History in the Nineteenth Century' writes that the life of the poorest agricultural labourer in 1760 was, though narrow, igno rant, and rough, nearer to beauty and poetry than it has since become in a world driven by machines and vulgar ized by hustle and advertisement. A recent article in the 'manchester Guardian' asserts as an undoubted fact that for large numbers of people, not only in England but all over the world, life becomes daily more intolerable. It is no use arguing, as many people will, that the poorest out-of-work man in England today has within his reach pleasures and comforts unknown to the workingman, and indeed to the bulk of the middle class, when George III came to the throne. That may be true, but it is quite irrelevant. A man's discontent is due not to what he has or lacks but to what he sees others enjoying while he goes without.
