Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection is filled with songs that tell of the pleasures and pains of love, the patterns of the countryside and the lives of ordinary people. Here are unfaithful soldiers, ghostly lovers, whalers on stormy seas, cuckolds and tricksters. By turns funny, plain-speaking and melancholic, these songs evoke a lost world and, with their melodies provided, record a vital musical tradition. Generations of inhabitants have helped shape the English countryside - but it has profoundly shaped us too.It has provoked a huge variety of responses from artists, writers, musicians and people who live and work on the land - as well as those who are travelling through it.English Journeys celebrates this long tradition with a series of twenty books on all aspects of the countryside, from stargazey pie and country churches, to man's relationship with nature and songs celebrating the patterns of the countryside (as well as ghosts and love-struck soldiers).

Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Folk-Songs Yes, one man at all events had taken the trouble, and had found out for himself that the country people in one small corner of Sussex were in the habit of singing. This one man was John Broadwood - whose name is to be honoured in the annals of English folk-song - who went about among the people of Sussex collecting their songs, which he published under the title of Sussex Songs, in 1843. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Folk Song, Some Conclusions The question, too, admits of no doubt. Folk-songs, genuinely and demonstrably English, have already been gathered in their hundreds, and of a quality at least as remarkable as their number. The work of collection, too, on any comprehensive scale, has only just begun. The larger part of rural England is still virgin soil; while of those districts that have already been visited, very few have, as yet, been explored-with any degree of thoroughness. The future, therefore, may hold still greater surprises in store for us. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Folk-Songs of England, Vol. 1: Folk-Songs From Dorset A large number of traditional songs have recently been recovered in England. Moreover, we believe them to be veritable folk-songs, i.a., songs which have been created or evolved by the common people. Taken in this sense, the folk-song must be definitely distinguished from the composition of the cultivated musician. It is the invention not of the individual, but of the community. Living only in the memories and on the lips of the singers, its existence has always been conditioned by its popularity, and by the accuracy with which it has reflected the ideals and taste of the common people. Consequently, the folk-song is stamped with the hall-mark of corporate approbation, and is the faithful expression in musical idiom of the qualities and characteristics of the nation to which it owes its origin. In its folk-music every nation possesses a musical heritage of priceless worth, which for many reasons it should cherish and preserve. The educational uses to which the folk-song may advantageously be put are many and obvious. It should be remembered, too, that folk-music is the germ of art-music. Style in all the arts - music, literature, poetry, painting, or sculpture - ultimately becomes national; indeed, it would be difficult to cite a single instance of a distinctive school of music in Europe which has not been founded upon a basis of folk-song. In the recovery, therefore, and dissemination of our own country's folk-music, the solution of the problem of a characteristic and national school of English music may possibly be found. In past centuries the collectors of English folk-songs were accustomed to edit and alter their folk-tunes before publishing them. In thus attempting to transmute folk-music into art-music they committed what most musicians would now agree was a fatal blunder. It is, therefore, scarcely necessary to state that the tunes contained in the present volume have not been editorially improved in any way, and that no melody will find a place in this series except in the precise form in which it was noted down by a competent musician from the lips of some folk-singer. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Little-Folk Songs ET golden, dear ones, rises each fair head To manly stature in full height completed, Blue eyes glance bright 'neath brows where candor seated Holds fearless sway. With ever quickening tread, The incessant years my little babes have led Far from me, flinging Childhood's toys and flowers Away, while speeding with the absolute hours To lift life's iron gage. Hope strives with dread To see you stand forth men. Backward I turn Adown the path home - bound, content to find Your tiny foot-prints, tenderly to trace Remembrances, - haply o'er which to yearn In the still house, - wherewith these leaves are lined; Yours all the sweetness that may lend them grace. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Traditional Songs and Carols: Collected and Edited, With Annotations and Pianoforte AccompanimentsThe strength of traditional melodies is indeed almost undeniable. Originally the perfectly sincere expression of some musical soul, they have passed on from father to son, receiving the impress of simple music-lovers unaccustomed to harmony, and therefore the more critically alive to the essentials of fine melody. It should not surprise us that the weakness of folk-song is most often apparent in its verse. A child will sing before it can speak. To compose a noble melody without harmony needs no teacher; whereas the invention of good poetry presupposes a varied vocabulary, a knowledge of grammar and the rules of rhyme and rhythm, and, above all, that habit of eloquence in daily speech and thought bred solely of familiarity with books. And books, even in their simplest form, were often unknown to the country dwellers through whom these old songs have descended.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The turn of the 20th century was a time of great change in Britain. The empire saw its global influence waning and its traditional social structures challenged. There was a growing weariness of industrialism and a desire to rediscover tradition and the roots of English heritage. A new interest in English folk song and dance inspired art music, which many believed was seeing a renaissance after a period of stagnation since the 18th century. This book focuses on the lives of seven composers--Ralph Vaughan Williams, Gustav Holst, Ernest Moeran, George Butterworth, Philip Heseltine (Peter Warlock), Gerald Finzi and Percy Grainger--whose work was influenced by folk songs and early music. Each chapter provides an historical background and tells the fascinating story of a musical life.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The National Song Book: A Complete Collection of the Folk-Songs, Carols, and Rounds, Suggested by the Board of Education (1905); Edited and Arranged for the Use of Schools This collection contains all the songs recommended for older children by the Board of Education in their Blue Book of Suggestions see Appendix VI., p. 131. The accompaniments are of the simplest character, and are merely intended to suggest sufficient harmony to make clear the tonality of each song, and in some cases to reinforce the characteristic rhythm, Without distracting the attention of the singers from the melody itself. English children may at first experience some difficulty in grasping the peculiar scales and intervals of Keltic tunes; but What Scotch, Welsh, and Irish children can sing naturally, English children can acquire, and the trouble involved will be amply repaid by the widening of their musical horizon, and by the more deeply poetical influence which Keltic music will exert upon the young mind. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Folk-Song and Popular Poetry OF the essays in this volume, that on American Sea Songs has been published in the Atlantic Monthly, and that on folk-songs of the Civil War in the American folk-lore Journal. Those on English and Scottish Popular Ballads, Lady Nairne and her Songs, and William Thom, the Weaver Poet, were contributed as literary articles to the Providence Sunday Journal. It may be thought that the essays on Sir Samuel Ferguson and Celtic Poetry, Lady Nairne, and William Thom do not come Within the strict limits of folk song and popular poetry, but they have a cognate interest as illustrating the development of folk song in cultivated literature, and seem to me to be within a reasonable approximation to the title of the volume.
