Book excerpt: Excerpt from Songs and Ballads of the American Revolution This volume presents a selection from the numerous productions in verse, which appeared during the war of the American Revolution. Many of them are taken from the newspapers and periodical issues of the time; others from original ballad-sheets and broadsides; while some have been received from the recollections of a few surviving soldiers, who heard and sang them amid the trials of the camp and field. Nearly every company had its "smart one" or poet, who beguiled the weariness of the march or the encampment by his minstrelsy, grave or gay; and the imperfect fragments which survive to us, provoke our regret that so few of them have been preserved. All that we can claim for the writers of these songs, is a manifest spirit of devotion to the cause, and defiance to its enemies. The poesy of their productions is meager. They did not write for fame; but, in the language of one of. the most honest and homely of them, "from a great desire to state the truth, and their opinion of it, in a quiet way, just set their poetical lathes a-turning, and twisted out ballads and songs for the good of the common cause." Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Ballads and Songs This anthology is intended to present to lovers of traditional song such selections as shall illustrate the main classes and types having currency in English-speaking North America. The interest attaching to them is partly literary, partly historical, and partly the interest of folk-lore. The choice of pieces has not been made on the ground of poetical quality, although this has been taken into account. The aim is rather to display the typical songs and ballads liked by the people and lingering among them. The arrangement is neither chronological nor regional but is based upon type of material. Some of the texts are printed for the first time while others have appeared in various places. Occasionally variant texts have been introduced, to illustrate the multiple forms which may be assumed by a single ballad. In a few instances, where it seemed to have interest, a manuscript version is reproduced literatim. The provenience of the ballad included is entered in the notes, and - where this can be determined - the history of the ballad is sketched. But an effort has been made not to burden the notes with great detail or abundant comment, since the purpose of the anthology is literary and illustrative rather than scholarly and critical. The collection is addressed to students of poetry and lovers of folk-song and to those who care for traditional pieces as social documents which reflect the life and traditions of those who preserve them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Songs of History: Poems and Ballads Upon Important Episodes in American History Many of these poems have appeared in different periodicals. Several were published in Poems for Christmas, Easter, and New Year's, a holiday volume, and I am indebted to the courtesy of the publishers for their use again. Others were written for music, and are used by the courtesy of John Church Co. Sev eral were written for special use on American holidays. Others are here used for the first time. They are brought together in this form in answer to a request that I would compile the verses I had written on subjects associated with American history, a request made in the hope that such a book might prove useful to the teacher, the family, and the school. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the twenties, thirties, and forties, now-legendary American songwriters and lyricists created a repertoire of popular songs, songs that have captured the hearts of generations of music lovers. George Gershwin, Richard Rodgers, Cole Porter, Jerome Kern, Harold Arlen, Hoagy Carmichael and many others, along with such lyricists as Ira Gershwin, Lorenz Hart, and Dorothy Fields, produced extraordinary songs of signal importance to the American musical heritage. In this book Allen Forte shares his love of American popular song. He discusses in detail twenty-three songs, ranging from Gershwin’s “Fascinating Rhythm” (1924) to Irving Berlin’s “Steppin’ Out with My Baby” (1947), guiding readers and listeners toward a deeper appreciation of this vital and engaging music. Forte writes for the general reader, assuming no background other than a familiarity with basic music notation. Each song is discussed individually and includes complete lyrics and simple leadsheet notation. Forte discusses the songs’ distinctive musical features and their sophisticated, often touching and witty lyrics. Readers can follow the music while they listen to the accompanying compact disc, which was specially recorded for this volume by baritone Richard Lalli and pianist-arranger Gary Chapman, with Allen Forte, pianist-arranger for “Embraceable You” and “Come Rain or Come Shine”. Learn about these favorite songs and more: “How Long Has This Been Going On?” “What Is This Thing Called Love?” “Embraceable You” “Autumn in New York” “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” “The Nearness of You” “That Old Black Magic” “Come Rain or Come Shine”

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The British Traditional Ballad in North America Two major steps are to be taken in assembling the evidence which may eventually bring us closer to the solution of these problems: the collection of texts, and the detailed study and correlation of the material collected. The first step is nearly completed in this country. Under the impetus supplied by the great students of the last two generations, Child himself, Kittredge, Barry, John Lomax, Hudson, Belden, and their fellows, the surviving songs of American and Anglo - American balladry are nearly all in print, on records, or in the various archives in a large variety of forms. Although further collection will and should continue, its hey - day is past. In the words of a Tennessee informant.
