Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) developed to address the needs of students whose mother tongue is not English. However, the linguistic competence required to achieve academic success at any university where English is the medium of instruction is a challenge for all students. While there are linguistic features common to academic literacy as a general genre, closer investigation reveals significant differences from one academic field to another. This volume asks what good writing is within specific disciplines, focussing on student work. Each chapter provides key insights by EAP professionals, based on their research in which they bring together analysis of student writing and interviews with subject specialists and markers who determine what 'good writing' is in their discipline. The volume includes chapters on established disciplines which have had less attention in the EAP and academic writing literature to date, including music, formal linguistics, and dentistry, as well as new and growing fields of study such as new media. Book excerpt: Basics of English Academic Writing: The Gateway to International Publications is a coursebook or textbook for the English Academic Writing course at the undergraduate level, which has gained high demand and become the gateway to international publications. This book comprises seven chapters that guide undergraduate students to master the basics of English academic writing, including phrases, clauses, sentences, citations and references, paragraphs, unity and coherence, and essays and journal articles. Each chapter provides objectives, detailed and practical materials, examples from internationally reputable journal articles, exercises, and assignments. Examples from internationally reputable journal articles play roles in embodying detailed materials into practices; exercises and assignments are beneficial to provide students with opportunities to practice. This book begins its explanation with a very basic unit in English academic writing, namely phrases. Students are then gradually introduced to clauses and sentences since many students face challenges in writing effective sentences and identifying clauses and their types, respectively. Students also learn about citations and references, which are vital in academic writing. They subsequently learn how to write effective paragraphs that maintain unity and coherence at the macro-level, meso-level, and micro-level. Ultimately, students are introduced to how to write essays and journal articles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the use of one category of prefabricated language (restricted lexical collocations) in native and non-native academic English in the social sciences, in an attempt to throw light on a neglected aspect of learner competence. It first surveys the existing theoretical viewpoints on word combinations and then reviews experimental research into the psycholinguistic processing of prefabricated language, which suggest that the role of conventional expressions is to facilitate fluent production and rapid comprehension. A computer-based corpus of native academic writing is analysed to discover to what extent and how such collocations are used in formal written English. Conventionality of style, it is suggested, aids precision of expression, clearly a quality highly valued in academic argument. A corpus of non-native writing is then subjected to a similar analysis. While the collocational errors learners make do not on the whole seriously destroy intelligibility, they can lead to a lack of precision and obscure the clarity of expression required in academic communication. Pedagogical implications are then considered, and it is seen that for the most part published teaching materials have failed to recognize the nature of collocations in general and offer little help. The final part of the study examines the treatment of restricted collocations in both general and phraseological dictionaries for learners. These are evaluated on their selection and presentation of collocations shown by the preceding research to be problematic for advanced learners. The conclusion suggests that, for such learners, who are mostly studying the language independently, good reference works are needed in the form of specialist collocational dictionaries. The results of this research help to establish principles for the design of such dictionaries.
