Book excerpt: Excerpt from Engineers Surveying Instruments, Their Construction, and Use It is proposed, to give a series of articles on the best methods of constructing, adjusting, and using different engineering field instruments. The intention is to make the language so simple and clear that all can understand, and at the same time make it something more than an elementary discussion, and not a re-statement of matter found in ordinary text books and engineering manuals. It is not necessary to dwell upon the importance to the engineer of a knowledge of the best forms of construction and of a thorough understanding of the principles which govern the adjustments of his instruments, and of course the engineer should be an expert in handling his instruments. The Platte Table. This instrument is not properly appreciated by the engineering profession. In a general way it is understood to be employed in the surveys, geodetical, topographical and geological, made by the general government, but it seems to be very well understood that the plane table is both useful and available in many cases in ordinary practice. This chain is used in surveying railroads, canals, and Where extensive line surveys are being con ducted. It is not infrequently employed in finding areas in acres. It is preferred to the surveyor's chain on account of its greater length, which enables one to work more rapidly and more accurately. When the chain is folded up the links Should not be parallel to each other, but should be crossed in such a manner as to touch each other in the middle, thus pre venting the bending of the links in tying up the chain. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Surveying and Levelling Instruments, Theoretically and Practically Described: For Construction, Qualities, Selection, Preservation, Adjustments, and Uses; With Other Apparatus and Appliances Used by Civil Engineers and Surveyors Notes were taken for many years before the production of this work of queries that came before the author for reply relative to functional parts of surveying instruments. These bore most frequently reference to optical and magnetical subjects, and to the qualities and action of spirit level tubes, also occasionally to graduation and the qualities of clamp and tangent motions. It was therefore thought that it would be useful to give notes upon these subjects in detail as far as possible in early chapters. As the work proceeded it was found that this plan saved much space in avoiding the necessity for separate description when parts of complex instruments were afterwards described. To show the state of the art and render the work useful, it was necessary that the structure of surveying instruments should be given with sufficient detail to be worked out by the skilful manufacturer. Beyond this it was thought to be most important that the professional man, who must have limited experience of the qualities of workmanship, should be supplied with as many simple tests as possible for assuring the qualities of the instruments he might purchase or use, with details also of their adjustments. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Queen Co's Manual of Engineers and Surveyors Instruments: Construction, Manipulation, Care, Theory and Adjustments The uses of the Engineer's Transit are so varied and convenient as to command for it the eminent interest of all called upon to do field work. Properly designated the "universal instrument," the well-made transit is, above all others, the instrument suited to the general needs of the engineer. As combining portability with a high degree of accuracy, it is admirably adapted to the great majority of practical problems presented to the surveyor, the railroad engineer, the mining engineer, and the topographer. If of accurate, scientific construction, it may be relied on for good results in running straight lines, measuring horizontal or vertical angles, leveling, and in telescopically measuring distances. The Quality of the Instrument being a most important factor in good field work, the purchaser should have clearly in mind the fact that the inferior instrument cannot always readily be distinguished from the superior, and that handsome finish, or even excellence in one particular, does not determine a good instrument. The general excellence of a transit instrument depends on scientific and practical knowledge, on the part of the maker, of every one of the many proper constructive features, and on a conscientious execution of the task in every detail. While a fine appearance and rich lacquering are by no means unbecoming a good instrument, there are in such an instrument hidden excellences of far greater importance.
