Book excerpt: A prototype USAF engine health management (EHM) system was developed and ground tested during this Phase II SBIR program. The EHM system is capable of real-time mechanical monitoring and diagnostics, aero-thermal performance monitoring and diagnostics, and "engine signature" based life accumulation. For the first time, state-of-the-art anomaly detection, monitoring, diagnosis and advanced life prediction analysis were integrated together in a single real-time engine health monitoring system. Additionally, the EHM system was developed to assist the 2-level maintenance concept and IHPTET initiatives.

Book excerpt: Widely used for power generation, gas turbine engines are susceptible to faults due to the harsh working environment. Most engine problems are preceded by a sharp change in measurement deviations compared to a baseline engine, but the trend data of these deviations over time are contaminated with noise and non-Gaussian outliers. Gas Turbine Diagnostics: Signal Processing and Fault Isolation presents signal processing algorithms to improve fault diagnosis in gas turbine engines, particularly jet engines. The algorithms focus on removing noise and outliers while keeping the key signal features that may indicate a fault. The book brings together recent methods in data filtering, trend shift detection, and fault isolation, including several novel approaches proposed by the author. Each method is demonstrated through numerical simulations that can be easily performed by the reader. Coverage includes: Filters for gas turbines with slow data availability Hybrid filters for engines equipped with faster data monitoring systems Nonlinear myriad filters for cases where monitoring of transient data can lead to better fault detection Innovative nonlinear filters for data cleaning developed using optimization methods An edge detector based on gradient and Laplacian calculations A process of automating fault isolation using a bank of Kalman filters, fuzzy logic systems, neural networks, and genetic fuzzy systems when an engine model is available An example of vibration-based diagnostics for turbine blades to complement the performance-based methods Using simple examples, the book describes new research tools to more effectively isolate faults in gas turbine engines. These algorithms may also be useful for condition and health monitoring in other systems where sharp changes in measurement data indicate the onset of a fault.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ISHM is an innovative combination of technologies and methods that offers solutions to the reliability problems caused by increased complexities in design, manufacture, use conditions, and maintenance. Its key strength is in the successful integration of reliability (quantitative estimation of successful operation or failure), "diagnosibility" (ability to determine the fault source), and maintainability (how to maintain the performance of a system in operation). It draws on engineering issues such as advanced sensor monitoring, redundancy management, probabilistic reliability theory, artificial intelligence for diagnostics and prognostics, and formal validation methods, but also "quasi-technical" techniques and disciplines such as quality assurance, systems architecture and engineering, knowledge capture, information fusion, testability and maintainability, and human factors. This groundbreaking book defines and explains this new discipline, providing frameworks and methodologies for implementation and further research. Each chapter includes experiments, numerical examples, simulations and case studies. It is the ideal guide to this crucial topic for professionals or researchers in aerospace systems, systems engineering, production engineering, and reliability engineering. Solves prognostic information selection and decision-level information fusion issues Presents integrated evaluation methodologies for complex aerospace system health conditions and software system reliability assessment Proposes a framework to perform fault diagnostics with a distributed intelligent agent system and a data mining approach for multistate systems Explains prognostic methods that combine both the qualitative system running state prognostics and the quantitative remaining useful life prediction

Book excerpt: To assess the technical state of GTE, various tools and methods of diagnostics including instrumental and analytical ones are applied in operation. The analytical approach towards the assessment of technical state of engine is based on diagnostic models and methods. This work suggests some ways of improvement of GTE diagnostic models and methods to be applied in operation. Special attention has been paid to diagnostic matrices (DM) usage in GTE diagnostics, with the matrices being meant for the detection and isolation of faults in gas path of engine. The diagnostic matrices application experience has shown that their application in GTE diagnostics is limited for a number of reasons. Those reasons have been revealed in the paper, and some ways have been suggested allowing one to use diagnostic matrices in GTE diagnostics without restriction. A dedicated software package for automated construction and analysis of the matrices has been developed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The propulsion system is arguably the most critical part of the aircraft; it certainly is the single most expensive component of the vehicle. Ensuring that engines operate reliably without major maintenance issues is an important goal for all operators, military or commercial. Engine health management (EHM) is a critical piece of this puzzle and has been a part of the engine maintenance for more than five decades. In fact, systematic condition monitoring was introduced for engines before it was applied to other systems on the aircraft. Diagnostics and Prognostics of Aerospace Engines is a collection of technical papers from the archives of SAE International, which introduces the reader to a brief history of EHM, presents some examples of EHM functions, and outlines important future trends. The goal of engine health maintenance is ultimately to reduce the cost of operations by catching problems before they become major issues, by helping reduce repair times through diagnostics, and by facilitating logistic optimization through prognostic estimates. Diagnostics and Prognostics of Aerospace Engines shows that the essence of these goals has not changed over time.

Book excerpt: Aircraft engine performance trend monitoring and gas path fault diagnostics are closely related technologies that assist operators in managing the health of their gas turbine engine assets. Trend monitoring is the process of monitoring the gradual performance change that an aircraft engine will naturally incur over time due to turbomachinery deterioration, while gas path diagnostics is the process of detecting and isolating the occurrence of any faults impacting engine flow-path performance. Today, performance trend monitoring and gas path fault diagnostic functions are performed by a combination of on-board and off-board strategies. On-board engine control computers contain logic that monitors for anomalous engine operation in real-time. Off-board ground stations are used to conduct fleet-wide engine trend monitoring and fault diagnostics based on data collected from each engine each flight. Continuing advances in avionics are enabling the migration of portions of the ground-based functionality on-board, giving rise to more sophisticated on-board engine health management capabilities. This paper reviews the conventional engine performance trend monitoring and gas path fault diagnostic architecture commonly applied today, and presents a proposed enhanced on-board architecture for future applications. The enhanced architecture gains real-time access to an expanded quantity of engine parameters, and provides advanced on-board model-based estimation capabilities. The benefits of the enhanced architecture include the real-time continuous monitoring of engine health, the early diagnosis of fault conditions, and the estimation of unmeasured engine performance parameters. A future vision to advance the enhanced architecture is also presented and discussed.

Book excerpt: This Aerospace Information Report (AIR) describes a Limited Engine Monitoring System that can be used by the flight crew or the maintenance staff, or both, to monitor the health of gas turbine engines in aircraft. This AIR considers monitoring of gas path performance and mechanical parameters, and systems such as low cycle fatigue counters and engine history recorders. It also considers typical measurement system accuracies and their impact. This AIR is intended as a technical guide. It is not intended to be used as a legal document or standard. AIR 1873 supplements ARP 1587, Aircraft Gas Turbine Engine Monitoring System Guide. The Aerospace Information Report (AIR) has been superseded by a completely new document, ARP5120, which provides guidance on how to develop and implement an integrated end-to-end health management system for gas turbine engine applications. The original AIR1873A information was updated and transformed into ARP5120. SAE ARP5120 consolidates SAE AIR1873, 4061B, 4175A, and 5120 into one document per the direction of the SAE E32 committee.
