Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an up-to-date, self-contained account of deep inelastic scattering in high-energy physics, intended for graduate students and physicists new to the subject. It covers the classic results which led to the quark-parton model of hadrons and the establishment of quantum chromodynamics as the theory of the strong nuclear force, in addition to new vistas in the subject opened up by the electron-proton collider HERA. The extraction of parton momentum distribution functions, a key input for physics at hadron colliders such as the Tevatron at Fermi Lab and the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, is described in detail. The challenges of the HERA data at 'low x' are described and possible explanations in terms of gluon dynamics and other models outlined. Other chapters cover: jet production at large momentum transfer and the determination of the strong coupling constant, electroweak interactions at very high momentum transfers, the extension of deep inelastic techniques to include hadronic probes, a summary of fully polarised inelastic scattering and the spin structure of the nucleon, and finally a brief account of methods in searching for signals 'beyond the standard model'.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific Study from the year 2019 in the subject Physics - Nuclear Physics, grade: 0.82, University of Manchester (The University of Manchester), language: English, abstract: Alpha particles, or Helium nuclei, are projected by a radioactive isotope source into a vacuum chamber filled by varying thicknesses of either metallic foils (aluminium, nickel) or gases (helium, nitrogen, argon). A Silicon detector, placed at the opposite end of the chamber, detects the final energies of the alpha particles as they penetrate through the media. It is theorised by the Bethe-Bloch equation that the greater the thickness of the medium in the vacuum chamber, the lower the final energies. Through comparison between the Bethe-Bloch equation and experimental data, the ionisation values for the various elements used can be found. Our preliminary results for one such element, aluminium, demonstrate an ionisation value of I=141.2eV.

Book excerpt: Electron energy loss spectroscopy (ELS) is a vast subject with a long and honorable history. The problem of stopping power for high energy particles interested the earliest pioneers of quantum mechanics such as Bohr and Bethe, who laid the theoretical foun dations of the subject. The experimental origins might perhaps be traced to the original Franck-Hertz experiment. The modern field includes topics as diverse as low energy reflection electron energy loss studies of surface vibrational modes, the spectroscopy of gases and the modern theory of plasmon excitation in crystals. For the study of ELS in electron microscopy, several historically distinct areas of physics are relevant, including the theory of the Debye Waller factor for virtual inelastic scattering, the use of complex optical potentials, lattice dynamics for crystalline specimens and the theory of atomic ionisation for isolated atoms. However the field of electron energy loss spectroscopy contains few useful texts which can be recommended for students. With the recent appearance of Raether's and Egerton's hooks (see text for references), we have for the first time both a comprehensive review text-due to Raether-and a lucid introductory text which emphasizes experimental aspects-due to Egerton. Raether's text tends to emphasize the recent work on surface plasmons, while the strength of Egerton's book is its treatment of inner shell excitations for microanalysis, based on the use of atomic wavefunctions for crystal electrons.

This book was released on 2000-09-04 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About three decades after the first experiments on deep inelastic lepton hadron scattering began to investigate the structure of hadrons, the history of this fruitful field of particle physics continues in the broad spectrum of research performed at the electron and positron proton collider HERA at DESY, where the multipurpose detectors ZEUS and H1 access ep scattering at a center of mass energy of 300 GeV and explore as yet uncharted kinematic realms of deep inelastic scattering. After the first years of data taking at HERA, each of the experiments has collected a total of roughly 40 pb 1 of e+p data, yielding sensitivity to deep inelastic e+p interactions at high four momentum transfers, Q2, where typi cal cross sections drop into the subpicobarn regime. This kinematic domain is characterized by electroweak unification, manifesting itself most markedly in the neutral and charged current cross sections, which approach an equal order of magnitude as Q2 rises above the square of the W and Z masses. Consequently, HERA allows, for the first time, studies of both types of pro cesses simultaneously with the same initial state conditions and in the same detector, and thus we can investigate the interplay of electroweak and strong forces governing the respective cross sections.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work the photographic emulsion technique has been applied to the study of the long range particles given off during neutron irradiation of uranium. Alvarez first observed these particles with an ion chamber and linear amplifier. Segre, et al (LA-87) studied these particles with an ion chamber which gave coincidences between these particles and fission. They found them to be coincident with fission within the time constant of their circuit (approx 5u sec). They were also able to identify these particles as alpha particles from the density of ionization near the end of the tracks. Hughes has observed a number of these alpha particles in the cloud chamber, but his setup did not permit him to observe the associated fission track. The cloud chamber or photographic emulsion technique permits information to be obtained about the alpha particles and their association with the fission process that cannot be got by the ion chamber method. The photographic emulsion technique has been used in this case because it lends itself very well to a study of rare events of this type.

This book was released on 2018-07-05 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calculations of inclusive inelastic scattering distributions for heavy ion collisions are considered within the high energy optical model. Using ground state sum rules, the inclusive projectile and complete projectile-target inelastic angular distributions are treated in both independent particle and correlated nuclear models. Comparisons between the models introduced are made for alpha particles colliding with He-4, C-12, and O-16 targets and protons colliding with O-16. Results indicate that correlations contribute significantly, at small momentum transfers, to the inelastic sum. Correlation effects are hidden, however, when total scattering distributions are considered because of the dominance of elastic scattering at small momentum transfers.
