Book excerpt: Water heating in residential buildings, also known as domestic hot water (DHW), is the third largest use of energy after appliances and space conditioning. About 90% of the residential buildings in the state use natural gas fueled water heaters, 6% use electricity, and a small percent use liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) or solar water heaters. The current energy use associated with residential water heating is small relative to the total amount of energy consumption in the residential building sector, but it is still a contributor of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Improving hot water systems can be beneficial for bill customer savings, energy use, and water savings. Heat pump water heaters (HPWH) can function as grid batteries by using the water tank capability of thermal storage. The use of aggregated electrical DHW systems to store extra electricity during peak generation times or during low utility time of use (TOU) rates has the potential to alleviate some of the curtailed renewable energy power generation sources in the California grid while reducing carbon emissions and customer cost. Water heating technology was simulated using the Building Energy Modeling software California Building Energy for Code Compliance (CBECC-Res) and the California Simulation Engine (CSE). Different climate zones were explored to compare the electricity needed for a water heater operation given the same input parameters of water draw profiles and building envelope. The results show the feasibility of using HPWH and ERWH technology to participate in demand response management programs. The demand response capability of HPWH and ERWH show that they could be useful tools to accommodate surplus energy from solar generation during the solar peak hours. Whether the demand response is implemented using traditional HPWH or ERWH units, the capability of the technology to act on control signals is a necessary condition for a successful program.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A tankless water heater can be an economical way to heat water for the home. Home water heating consumes a large portion of a home’s energy use. Standard water heaters use energy by heating a large storage tank of water and keeping it warm for long periods. Homeowners looking for tankless water heaters will find both gas and electric models. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. Potential buyers need to research their needs before deciding which type of tankless water heater to purchase. A Guide to the Tankless Water Heater will help you in this decision. Not meant to be a detailed installation guide, the book will outline the needs, advantages and disadvantages of each type of tankless water heater and decide which type will best fulfill their home water heating needs. The Home Guide Basics Series of books will explain the basic operation, options and systems of many appliances used in the home. The series will include books on rechargeable batteries, tankless water heaters, robotic vacuum cleaners, laminate floors, radiant heat, solar power, alternate energy sources, water filtration, solar garden equipment and more. tankless water heater, water heating, home water heat, home water heating, gas tankless water heater, electric tankless water heater, compact water heater

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water heating is an important end-use, accounting for roughly 16% of total primary energy consumption in the US residential sector. Recently enacted efficiency standards on water heaters and hot water-using equipment (e.g., dishwashers, clothes washers, showerheads, and faucets) will substantially affect the energy use of water heaters in the future. Assessment of current and future utility programs and government policies requires that regulators, resource planners, and forecasters understand the effects of these regulations. In order to quantify these impacts, this paper presents a detailed end-use breakdown of household hot and cold water use developed for the US Department of Energy. This breakdown is based on both previous studies and new data and analysis. It is implemented in a spreadsheet forecasting framework, which allows significant flexibility in specifying end-use demands and linkages between water heaters and hot water-using appliances. We disaggregate total hot and cold water use (gallons per day) into their component parts: showers, baths, faucets (flow dominated and volume dominated), toilets, landscaping/other, dishwashers, and clotheswashers. We then use the end-use breakdown and data on equipment characteristics to assess the impacts of current efficiency standards on hot water use and water heater energy consumption.

Book excerpt: America's economy and lifestyles have been shaped by the low prices and availability of energy. In the last decade, however, the prices of oil, natural gas, and coal have increased dramatically, leaving consumers and the industrial and service sectors looking for ways to reduce energy use. To achieve greater energy efficiency, we need technology, more informed consumers and producers, and investments in more energy-efficient industrial processes, businesses, residences, and transportation. As part of the America's Energy Future project, Real Prospects for Energy Efficiency in the United States examines the potential for reducing energy demand through improving efficiency by using existing technologies, technologies developed but not yet utilized widely, and prospective technologies. The book evaluates technologies based on their estimated times to initial commercial deployment, and provides an analysis of costs, barriers, and research needs. This quantitative characterization of technologies will guide policy makers toward planning the future of energy use in America. This book will also have much to offer to industry leaders, investors, environmentalists, and others looking for a practical diagnosis of energy efficiency possibilities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heat pump water heaters (HPWHs) are a promising technology that can decrease the domestic hot water energy consumption over an electric resistance storage water heater by up to 50%. Heat pump water heaters are really two water heaters in one; they can heat water by using a heat pump or by using electric resistance elements. During large water draw events the HPWHs will use the resistance elements that decrease the overall efficiency of the units. ORNL proposed and tested an advanced control algorithm that anticipates the large water draw events and appropriately sets-up the temperature of the tank water using only the heat pump. With sufficient energy stored in the tank at the elevated temperature, the large water draw is provided for and electric resistance use is avoided. Simulations using a validated heat pump water heater model, and measured water draw data from 25 homes, show average yearly energy savings of 9% for the advanced control algorithm. If the advanced control algorithm perfectly predicts the large water draw events then the savings increase to 19%. This discrepancy could be due to a lack of predictability of water draw patterns in some homes, or the water draw forecasting algorithm could be improved.
