Download or read book Progress in Sexology written by Robert Gemme and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As editor of the series "Perspectives in Sexuality: Behavior, Research, and Therapy," I consider it a major scholarly achievement to publish selected proceedings of the Second International Congress of Sexology. Never before have so many professional organizations supported such a conference or so many scholars, from so many coun tries, participated in such a conference. Eighteen countries were represented; over one hundred papers were presented. The Congress and these proceedings mark an historical mile stone for sexology in international scientific cooperation. The collaboration of so many researchers from diverse disciplines fur ther illuminates the interdisciplinary approach. The papers pre sented reflect the challenge accepted by scientists to compare varieties of techniques and programs, to develop new theories and creative approaches in their investigations, and to initiate sci entific study of heretofore taboo areas of inquiry. Clearly, sexology has come of age. It takes its place among the respected scientific disciplines. This monumental achievement, the Second International Congress of Sexology, signals the emer gence at the international level of Sexology as Science. Richard Green ix Preface The Second International Congress of Sexology was held in Montreal, Canada on October 28-31, 1976. Researchers of interna tional acclaim from eighteen countries presented progress reports in specialities as endocrinology, neurophysiology, infertility, contraception, sexual dysfunction, ethics in sex research and sex education. The Congress, whose theme was "international progress in sexology," had as its scientific objective a wide range of sub jects concerning the interdisciplinary study of sexology from many areas of the world.

Book Synopsis Anabolic Steroids by : H.-L. Krüskemper
Download or read book Anabolic Steroids written by H.-L. Krüskemper and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anabolic Steroids attempts to trace the development of anabolic steroids in the chemical, experimental biological, and clinical disciplines, and presents a precise outline of the current state of substantiated knowledge. This book deals with anabolic steroids derived from natural androgens and characterized by their stimulatory action on the biosynthesis of tissue protein and by their simultaneous low androgenicity. The biochemical part is a review of substantiated and current knowledge based largely on experimental results with animals, while the clinical part attempts to bring out the pathophysiological rationale of therapy with anabolic steroids, again based on experimental data. The book begins with a discussion of the nomenclature and chemistry of anabolic steroids. This is followed by separate chapters on the metabolism, activities, and mechanism of action of anabolic steroids; clinical application of anabolic steroids, side effects, and test procedures.
Book Synopsis Hormone Toxicity in the Newborn by : Fred A. Kincl
Download or read book Hormone Toxicity in the Newborn written by Fred A. Kincl and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The account of "neonatal sterilization" is the story of the advocates of direct effect of steroids on the gonads and those who believed in the indirect influence, mediated through the hypothalamus and/or the pituitary gland. As often happens in biology, both convictions represent the same image seen from different perspectives. Prof DC Johnson (Kansas City, KS) reminisced the beginning of the story in a letter to me. I am paraphrasing parts of the letter with his permission. "As a starting point we could pick the life-long research of Emil Steinach ... " Steinach recognized the influence of testes on the develop ment of accessory sex organs in 1894, described virilization of females and feminization of males in 1913, and identified the controlling influence of the hypophysis on the gonads in 1928. He reviewed his work in a book Sex and Life, Forty Years of Biological and Medical Experience (E Steinach and L Loebe!; Faber and Faber, London, 1940). He got on the wrong road in later years and that is the reason everybody seems to have forgotten him. He presented his hypothesis that estrogen has a direct effect upon the testes, i. e. hormone antagonism, at the 1st International Congress on Sex Research in 1926.
Book Synopsis Endocrine Disruptors by : M. Metzler
Download or read book Endocrine Disruptors written by M. Metzler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-09-25 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of endocrine disruption or endocrine active compounds (EACs), which is just emerging and still controversial, is comprehensively covered by leading experts in Volume 3, Subvolumes L (the present volume, Part I) and M (Part II). The major classes of endocrine active chemicals are discussed, as well as methods for their detection and their association with health disturbances in humans and wildlife. The etiology of several of the human diseases associated with endocrine disruptors, e.g. breast and prostate cancer, decreased fertility and malformations, is still poorly understood, and the current state of knowledge is presented. Since hormonally active agents appear to have the potential of both adverse and beneficial effects, the evidence of health benefits associated with endocrine active compounds in humans is also presented. Basic chapters on the mode of action of EACs and on the etiology of the associated diseases facilitate the understanding of this complex subject for non-medical readers.
