Book excerpt: Syphilis is an illness with mythology. The story of its origin, dissemination and treatment have all been mired in confusion, a mix of reality and quackery. I have tried to put the organism as the principal protagonist of the story, firmly in an historical focus which centres more on its social impact than on its particular medical management. A diagnosis of Syphilis had personal and community consequence and its impact transcended into the arts. Despite the discovery of an effective treatment to which the organism has fortunately failed to mutate, the restrictions in available management have been social and a result of prejudice towards its victims. This may explain why it is once again on the global rise in places where access to the most basic antibiotics remains limited. This book uniquely considers the sociological sequel of infection, the wider influence extending beyond the physical that has become its legacy.

Book Synopsis Diagnostic Criteria of Syphilis, Yaws and Treponarid (Treponematoses) and of Some Other Diseases in Dry Bones by : C.J. Hacket
Download or read book Diagnostic Criteria of Syphilis, Yaws and Treponarid (Treponematoses) and of Some Other Diseases in Dry Bones written by C.J. Hacket and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publieation summarizes an initial unpublished report (1971) on diagnostie eriteria in dry bones. The relevant study was made in 22 medieal museums in Europe, England and Seotland between 1966 and 1969. About 670 dry bones were reeorded by over 2000 photographs. Emphasis is plaeed on ehanges for whieh diagnostie eriteria are proposed rather than on those for whieh diagnostie problems remain. The ehanges studied were maeroseopieal not mieroseopieal. This is not areport on the pathological ehanges in dry bones in medieal museums, but a statement on "Diagnostic eriteria of syphilis in dry bones" and of eertain other prevalent ehanges, and their eauses, whieh are needed for differential diagnosis. 'Syphilis' as used here usually refers equally to the 'treponematoses' whieh inc1udes yaws and treponarid. It is intended as a eomprehensive guide for archaeologists and anthro pologists, and as an instrument of preeision for osteo-arehaeologists. It is not a manual of pathology, although pathologists may be interested in this revival of the dying skill of diagnosis of disease in dry bones. All reeords, written, photo graphie and radiographie, together with the initial 120,000 word report, have been deposited in the Department of Morbid Anatomy, Institute of Orthopaedies, London, where they will be available for study. Abrief introduetion to this study has been published (Haekett, 1975). I would like especially to thank the President of the Heidelberger Akade mie der Wissenschaften, and Doktor H. Götze of Springer-Verlag, Heidelberg, for the publieation of this monograph
Book Synopsis Health, Hygiene, and Eugenics in Southeastern Europe to 1945 by : Christian Promitzer

This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a collection of chapters that deal with issues of health, hygiene and eugenics in Southeastern Europe to 1945, specifically, in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece and Romania. Its major concern is to examine the transfer of medical ideas to society via local, national and international agencies and to show in how far developments in public health, preventive medicine, social hygiene, welfare, gender relations and eugenics followed a regional pattern. This volume provides insights into a region that has to date been marginal to scholarship of the social history of medicine.

Book Synopsis Immunology of Human Infection by : André J. Nahmias
Download or read book Immunology of Human Infection written by André J. Nahmias and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-09 with total page 667 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When we were first approached by the senior editors of this series to edit a book on interactions between the host and infectious agents, we accepted this offer as an exciting challenge. The only condition, readily agreed upon, was that such a book should focus on the immunology of infections in humans. Our reasons, if not biases, were severalfold. We sensed that the fields of microbiology and im munology, which had diverged as each was focusing on its individual search, were coming together. In agreement with the opinions expressed by Dr. Richard Krause in the Introduction, we strongly believed that the development of the immune system evolved in response to infectious agents and that the evolution of these agents was influenced in turn by the character of the host's responses. An inten sive examination of the multitude of primitive or more recently developed host defense mechanisms to determine their relative contribution to man's resistance to a given infectious agent appeared to us to be of crucial basic and practical interest. Many immune mechanisms studied in animals were being explored in humans and it appeared timely to focus particularly on what was known about man's resistance to infectious agents, correlating this information with lessons learned from relevant experiments in animal models.
