Book excerpt: Mollusks have been important to humans since our earliest days. Initially, when humans were primarily interested in what they could eat or use, mollusks were important as food, ornaments, and materials for tools. Over the centuries, as human knowledge branched out and individuals started to study the world around them, mollusks were important subjects for learning how things worked. In this volume, the editors and contributors have brought together a broad range of topics within the field of malacology. It is our expectation that these topics will be of interest and use to amateur and professional malacologists.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT The present study gives status of physic-chemical parameters of Lotus Lake, located on Toranmal Plateau at 21° 53’ 20’’ N latitude, 74° 28’ 01’’ E longitude and 3201 Ft., above MSL. Lotus Lake is a shallow perennial water body. Physico-chemical parameters were studied for two years (December 2006 to November 2008). The yearly data is divided into four seasons. The statistical analysis Mean, SEM, One way ANOVA and Pearson Correlation is carried out. Present study supports that physico-chemical properties of freshwater body are characteristics of the climatic, geochemical, geomorphological and pollution conditions prevailing in the drainage basin and the underlying aquifer. Significant seasonal variations in physico-chemical parameters were recorded at this fresh water wetland.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dominance of insects amongst all living organisms on earth, coupled with infinite wealth of knowledge so important for our own existence, is a fundamental scientific fact which is yet to be widely acknowledged. This dominance means that in numbers of species beyond our comprehension these animals permeate diverse and essential natural processes in Earth's terrestrial, aerial and freshwater ecosystems, contributing to the function of the natural world as a self-sustaining biological system. Invariably insects are an integral and complex part of the terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems with which the future of humans is inextricably linked. Insects have ultimately achieved a formidable diversity. Generally, insects are beneficial organisms, however, many of them are important pests and/or vectors to a large number of parasites and other microbial pathogens to both human being, his associates and the plants. The burden caused by their infestation or infection run up to several million-zillion rupees annually. Therefore, knowledge about extreme biodiversity and ecological relationships of these animals is a practical necessity: in the man's own interest to sustain the species. Packed with original 25 original articles/reviews, this book on 'Entomology: Ecology and Biodiversity' offers an invaluable opportunity to comprehend more deeply about our most intimate allies - the insects! The book truly establishes a foundation in basic entomology through varied and diverse treatment to entomology, while focusing on specialized topics in insect ecology and biodiversity, forensic and medical entomology.

Book Synopsis Management of Insect Pests in Vegetable Crops by : Ramanuj Vishwakarma
Download or read book Management of Insect Pests in Vegetable Crops written by Ramanuj Vishwakarma and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-04-13 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new book on the sustainable management of insect pests in important vegetables offers valuable management strategies in detail. It focuses on eco-friendly technology and approaches to mitigating the damage caused by insect pests with special reference to newer insecticides. Chapters in the volume provide an introduction to vegetable entomology and go on to present a plethora of research on sustainable eco-friendly pest management strategies for root vegetables, spice crops, tuber crops, and more. Vegetable crops that are infested by several insect pests from the nursery to the harvesting stage cause enormous crop losses. Given that it is estimated that up to 40 percent of global crops are lost to agricultural pests each year, new research on effective management strategies is vital. The valuable information provided in this book will be very helpful for faculty and advanced-level students, scientists and researchers, policymakers, and others involved in pest management for vegetable crops.
