Book Synopsis Encyclopedia of Cryptozoology by : Michael Newton
Download or read book Encyclopedia of Cryptozoology written by Michael Newton and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-10-05 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On every continent and in every nation, animals unrecognized by modern science are reported on a daily basis. People passionately pursue these creatures--the name given to their field of study is cryptozoology. Coined in the 1950s, the term literally means the science of hidden animals. When the International Society of Cryptozoology (ISC) was formed in 1982, the founders declared that the branch of science is also concerned with "the possible existence of known animals in areas where they are not supposed to occur (either now or in the past) as well as the unknown persistence of presumed extinct animals to the present time or to the recent past...what makes an animal of interest to cryptology is that it is unexpected." This reference work presents a "flesh and blood" view of cryptozoology. Here, 2,744 entries are listed, the majority of which each describe one specific creature or type of creature. Other entries cover 742 places where unnamed cryptids are said to appear; profiles of 77 groups and 112 individuals who have contributed to the field; descriptions of objects and events important to the subject; and essays on cryptotourism and hoaxes, for example. Appendices offer a timeline of zoological discoveries, annotated lists of movies and television series with cryptozoological themes, a list of crypto-fiction titles and a list of Internet websites devoted to cryptozoology.

Download or read book The Most Terrifying Trace of The Bhopal Gas Leak written by Rudiyant and published by Lembar Langit Indonesia. This book was released on 2023-09-01 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bhopal Gas Leak, also known as the Bhopal Tragedy, occurred on the night of December 2-3, 1984, at the Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL) pesticide plant in Bhopal, India. The leaked gas was methyl isocyanate (MIC), used in the production of pesticides at the UCIL plant. The release of this gas resulted in a toxic gas cloud spreading around the Bhopal area. The tragedy claimed the lives of thousands of people in the days following the gas leak. The exact number of casualties is still debated, but estimates range from 15,000 to 25,000 people. Many others suffered serious injuries and long-term effects from gas exposure. The gas leak occurred due to an uncontrolled chemical reaction inside the MIC storage tank. The exact cause of the leak is still disputed, but factors mentioned include poor maintenance, safety violations, and security system failures. In addition to human casualties, the Bhopal gas leak also had significant environmental impacts. The spreading gas cloud contaminated the soil and air around the plant, causing extensive ecological damage and affecting the health of the local community for a long time. Book Synopsis Encyclopedia of Distances by : Michel Marie Deza
Download or read book Encyclopedia of Distances written by Michel Marie Deza and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-16 with total page 757 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 4-th edition of the leading reference volume on distance metrics is characterized by updated and rewritten sections on some items suggested by experts and readers, as well a general streamlining of content and the addition of essential new topics. Though the structure remains unchanged, the new edition also explores recent advances in the use of distances and metrics for e.g. generalized distances, probability theory, graph theory, coding theory, data analysis. New topics in the purely mathematical sections include e.g. the Vitanyi multiset-metric, algebraic point-conic distance, triangular ratio metric, Rossi-Hamming metric, Taneja distance, spectral semimetric between graphs, channel metrization, and Maryland bridge distance. The multidisciplinary sections have also been supplemented with new topics, including: dynamic time wrapping distance, memory distance, allometry, atmospheric depth, elliptic orbit distance, VLBI distance measurements, the astronomical system of units, and walkability distance. Leaving aside the practical questions that arise during the selection of a ‘good’ distance function, this work focuses on providing the research community with an invaluable comprehensive listing of the main available distances. As well as providing standalone introductions and definitions, the encyclopedia facilitates swift cross-referencing with easily navigable bold-faced textual links to core entries. In addition to distances themselves, the authors have collated numerous fascinating curiosities in their Who’s Who of metrics, including distance-related notions and paradigms that enable applied mathematicians in other sectors to deploy research tools that non-specialists justly view as arcane. In expanding access to these techniques, and in many cases enriching the context of distances themselves, this peerless volume is certain to stimulate fresh research.
