Book Synopsis The Ethics of Animal Research by : Jeremy R. Garrett
Download or read book The Ethics of Animal Research written by Jeremy R. Garrett and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2012-03-30 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A balanced, accessible discussion of whether and on what grounds animal research can be ethically justified. An estimated 100 million nonhuman vertebrates worldwide—including primates, dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, birds, rats, and mice—are bred, captured, or otherwise acquired every year for research purposes. Much of this research is seriously detrimental to the welfare of these animals, causing pain, distress, injury, or death. This book explores the ethical controversies that have arisen over animal research, examining closely the complex scientific, philosophical, moral, and legal issues involved. Defenders of animal research face a twofold challenge: they must make a compelling case for the unique benefits offered by animal research; and they must provide a rationale for why these benefits justify treating animal subjects in ways that would be unacceptable for human subjects. This challenge is at the heart of the book. Some contributors argue that it can be met fairly easily; others argue that it can never be met; still others argue that it can sometimes be met, although not necessarily easily. Their essays consider how moral theory can be brought to bear on the practical ethical questions raised by animal research, examine the new challenges raised by the emerging possibilities of biotechnology, and consider how to achieve a more productive dialogue on this polarizing subject. The book's careful blending of theoretical and practical considerations and its balanced arguments make it valuable for instructors as well as for scholars and practitioners.

Book Synopsis Endohedral Metallofullerenes by : Hisanori Shinohara
Download or read book Endohedral Metallofullerenes written by Hisanori Shinohara and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Endohedral Metallofullerenes: Fullerenes with Metal Inside presents a comprehensive survey of the current state of knowledge on endohedral metallofullerenes, from preparation to functionalization, reactivity and applications. Following a brief historical overview, the book describes methods for synthesis, extraction, separation and purification, and provides an insight into the molecular and crystal structures. Subsequent chapters discuss various categories of endohedral metallofullerenes based on the encapsulated species, including carbides, nitrides, sulphides, oxides, non-metal and non-IPR endohedral metallofullerenes, followed by scanning tunneling microscopy studies and the examination of electronic, vibrational, magnetic and optical properties. The book concludes with chapters addressing the chemical functionalization of endohedral metallofullerenes, and applications ranging from solar cells to biomedicine.

Book Synopsis Coordination Chemistry in Protein Cages by : Takafumi Ueno
Download or read book Coordination Chemistry in Protein Cages written by Takafumi Ueno and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-03-22 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sets the stage for the design and application of new protein cages Featuring contributions from a team of international experts in the coordination chemistry of biological systems, this book enables readers to understand and take advantage of the fascinating internal molecular environment of protein cages. With the aid of modern organic and polymer techniques, the authors explain step by step how to design and construct a variety of protein cages. Moreover, the authors describe current applications of protein cages, setting the foundation for the development of new applications in biology, nanotechnology, synthetic chemistry, and other disciplines. Based on a thorough review of the literature as well as the authors' own laboratory experience, Coordination Chemistry in Protein Cages Sets forth the principles of coordination reactions in natural protein cages Details the fundamental design of coordination sites of small artificial metalloproteins as the basis for protein cage design Describes the supramolecular design and assembly of protein cages for or by metal coordination Examines the latest applications of protein cages in biology and nanotechnology Describes the principles of coordination chemistry that govern self-assembly of synthetic cage-like molecules Chapters are filled with detailed figures to help readers understand the complex structure, design, and application of protein cages. Extensive references at the end of each chapter serve as a gateway to important original research studies and reviews in the field. With its detailed review of basic principles, design, and applications, Coordination Chemistry in Protein Cages is recommended for investigators working in biological inorganic chemistry, biological organic chemistry, and nanoscience.
