Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: suboMale leadership, patriarchal values and a few powerful men's ceaseless struggle for money and domination have subjected the Earth to environmental catastrophe and sparked a frightening nuclear arms race. Since the time of the suffragettes, women's influence on politics and economy is steadily growing. Not only in western democracies do women hold positions previously earmarked for men - but worldwide - the level of well-educated women is currently increasing at a notable rate. However, with this positive trend in mind, how much has fundamentally changed? One must question - have women wholly managed to really increase their political and economical influence? Furthermore is it enough to make a substantial difference? Progress is made, but the overall investment in male projects as armaments and the environmental degradation is steadily rising. In many cultures, women remain subordinate to their men, brothers and even their sons. Unprotected by law, locked up or kept as slaves, women still constitute cheap labor in households, industrial production, and the sex trade. Mindful people understand that the World is in dire need of an alternative to today's destructive male leadership. History shows that men in power will not in sufficient time be able to change their behavior to stop the emerging catastrophe. Could a radical increase in Female political power save the situation?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What is women's empowerment, and how and why does it matter for women's health? Despite the rise of a human rights-based approach to women's health and increasing awareness of the synergies between women's health and empowerment, a lack of consensus remains as to how to measure empowerment and successfully intervene in ways that improve health. Women's Empowerment and Global Health provides thirteen detailed, multidisciplinary case studies from across the globe and through the course of a woman's life to show how science and advocacy can be creatively merged to enhance the agency and status of women. Accompanying short videos provide background about programs on the ground in India, the United States, Mexico, Nicaragua, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. Women's Empowerment and Global Health explores the promises and limits of programmatic, scientific, and rights-based work in real-world settings and provides the next generation of researchers and practitioners, as well as students in global and public health, sociology, anthropology, women's studies, law, business, and medicine, with cutting edge and inspirational examples of programs that point the way toward achieving women's equality and fulfilling the right to health."--Provided by publisher.

Book excerpt: While many feminist and queer movements are designed to challenge sexism, they often simultaneously police gender and sexuality—sometimes just as fiercely as the straight, male-centric mainstream does. Among LGBTQ activists, there is a long history of lesbians and gay men dismissing bisexuals, transgender people, and other gender and sexual minorities. In each case, exclusion is based on the premise that certain ways of being gendered or sexual are more legitimate, natural, or righteous than others. As a trans woman, bisexual, and femme activist, Julia Serano has spent much of the last ten years challenging various forms of exclusion within feminist and queer/LGBTQ movements. In Excluded, she chronicles many of these instances of exclusion and argues that marginalizing others often stems from a handful of assumptions that are routinely made about gender and sexuality. These false assumptions infect theories, activism, organizations, and communities—and worse, they enable people to vigorously protest certain forms of sexism while simultaneously ignoring and even perpetuating others. Serano advocates for a new approach to fighting sexism that avoids these pitfalls and offers new ways of thinking about gender, sexuality, and sexism that foster inclusivity rather than exclusivity.

Book excerpt: The #1 international best seller In Lean In, Sheryl Sandberg reignited the conversation around women in the workplace. Sandberg is chief operating officer of Facebook and coauthor of Option B with Adam Grant. In 2010, she gave an electrifying TED talk in which she described how women unintentionally hold themselves back in their careers. Her talk, which has been viewed more than six million times, encouraged women to “sit at the table,” seek challenges, take risks, and pursue their goals with gusto. Lean In continues that conversation, combining personal anecdotes, hard data, and compelling research to change the conversation from what women can’t do to what they can. Sandberg provides practical advice on negotiation techniques, mentorship, and building a satisfying career. She describes specific steps women can take to combine professional achievement with personal fulfillment, and demonstrates how men can benefit by supporting women both in the workplace and at home. Written with humor and wisdom, Lean In is a revelatory, inspiring call to action and a blueprint for individual growth that will empower women around the world to achieve their full potential.

Book excerpt: This classic manifesto is “a foundational text for anyone hoping to understand transgender politics and culture in the U.S. today.” (NPR) *Named as one of 100 Best Non-Fiction Books of All Time by Ms. Magazine* In Whipping Girl, biologist and trans activist Julia Serano shares her experiences and insights—both pre- and post-transition—to reveal the ways in which fear, suspicion, and dismissiveness toward femininity shape our attitudes toward trans women, as well as gender and sexuality as a whole. Serano's well-honed arguments and pioneering advocacy stem from her ability to bridge the gap between the often-disparate biological and social perspectives on gender. In this provocative manifesto, she exposes how deep-rooted the cultural belief is that femininity is frivolous, weak, and passive. In addition to debunking popular misconceptions about being transgender, Serano makes the case that today's feminists and transgender activists must work to embrace and empower femininity—in all of its wondrous forms.

Book excerpt: In this paper, the authors describe the adaptation and validation of a project-level WEAI (or pro-WEAI) that agricultural development projects can use to identify key areas of women’s (and men’s) disempowerment, design appropriate strategies to address identified deficiencies, and monitor project outcomes related to women’s empowerment. The 12 pro-WEAI indicators are mapped to three domains: intrinsic agency (power within), instrumental agency (power to), and collective agency (power with). A gender parity index compares the empowerment scores of men and women in the same household. The authors describe the development of pro-WEAI, including: (1) pro-WEAI’s distinctiveness from other versions of the WEAI; (2) the process of piloting pro-WEAI in 13 agricultural development projects during the Gender, Agriculture, and Assets Project, phase 2 (GAAP2); (3) analysis of quantitative data from the GAAP2 projects, including intrahousehold patterns of empowerment; and (4) a summary of the findings from the qualitative work exploring concepts of women’s empowerment in the project sites. The paper concludes with a discussion of lessons learned from pro-WEAI and possibilities for further development of empowerment metrics.

The news in particular has an important role in how notions of power are distributed in the society. This report presents study findings on how women and men are represented in the news in the Nordic countries, and to what extent women and men occupy the decision-making positions in the media. The survey is based on the recent findings from three cross-national research projects. These findings are supported by national studies. The results indicate that in all the Nordic countries women are underrepresented in the news media both as news subjects and as sources of information. Men also dominate in higher-level decision-making positions. The report includes examples of measures used to improve the gender balance in Nordic news.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The proposed edited book on Women Empowerment: Challenges and Strategies, deals with the problems associated with the women community suffering from marginalization and the ways to address their identity and human rights concerns. The status of women in every nation was deprived and never considered. They were considered as mere machines to fulfill mere different duties. During ancient ages, we can see the evolution of changing and taking new perspectives. The concept of female in Manusmriti and in Puranas of considering them as dependents and deities is contradictory. There are still places where women are still considered as deprived and are still under chains it is the duty of the privileged to empower the underprivileged.Women empowerment programs failed as they overlooked the structural factors that perpetuated oppression and exploitation. The fulfillment of practical needs such as food, health care, and education cannot empower women unless the long-term strategic needs are met. The process of empowerment requires a transformation of structures of sub ordinance, control over material and intellectual resources, gaining decisions, making authority and reduction of gender inequality. The present book is the collection of Twenty-two research papers enlightens and thought-provoking articles contributed by research scholars throwing light on the women empowerment and role of religion and policies, women and nutrition, gender sensitization, role of education, status of working women in unorganized sector, role of media and NGO in promoting women empowerment, empowerment of Indian women –a challenge of 21st century, life skills and older women with reference to old age homes, depiction of women in literature and Marginalization of Women Characters in literature, social organization and woman empowerment and entrepreneurshipThe book will be an important reference source for scholars in the fields of rights of the marginalized sections, rights of the women, the role of education & practice and gender studies. The purpose of this edited book is to provide a common platform for academicians and policymakers for a comprehensive deliberation on issues relating to social sector development in our society. The research papers and various articles covering so many themes of social awareness for education and social sector development are compiled in one place so that anyone can get easy access to their research. This book is edited basically for the students, teachers, researchers, and academics. The students pursuing their masters/ Ph.D. degree and doing dissertations/thesis on women empowerment may also be highly benefited by this book."

Book excerpt: Globally, women are facing social, economic, and cultural barriers impeding their autonomy and agency. Accelerated women empowerment programs often fail to attain their targets as envisaged by the policymakers due to a variety of reasons, with the most prominent being the deep-rooted cultural norms ingrained within society. In the era of globalization, empowerment of women demands new approaches and strategies that encourage the mainstreaming of gender equality as a societal norm. The Handbook of Research on New Dimensions of Gender Mainstreaming and Women Empowerment is a critical scholarly publication that examines global gender issues and new strategies for the promotion of women empowerment and gender mainstreaming in various spheres of women’s lives, including education and ICT, economic participation, health and sexuality, mental health, aging, law and judiciary, leadership, and decision making. It provides a comprehensive coverage of all major gender issues with novel ideas on gender mainstreaming being contributed by men and women authors from multidisciplinary backgrounds. Gender perspective and intersectional approach in the discourses make this handbook a unique contribution to the scholarship of social sciences and humanities. The book provides new theoretical inputs and practical directions to academicians, sociologists, social workers, psychologists, managers, lawyers, policy makers, and government officials in their efforts at gender mainstreaming. With a wide range of conceptual richness, this handbook is an excellent reference guide to students and researchers in programs pertaining to gender/women's studies, cultural studies, economics, sociology, social work, medicine, law, and management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Womens Worth: Priceless focuses on the necessity to protect and promote the human rights of women and girls around the world. It is a sad commentary on the historical and traditional prejudice against women and girls. In the worlds poorest countries, women and girls are among the most vulnerable and marginalized members of society. This goes without saying that womens rights violations are present in every country and at every level of society. Eliminating gender discrimination and empowering women are among the imperatives facing the world today. Although much has changed in the decades of womens rights advocacy, the rights and entitlements claimed for women and girls are commonly ignored or suppressed in many societies worldwide. Consequently, hundreds of millions of women and girls are deprived of their human rights. But what can we, the concerned people, do to stop these abuses? I believe the answer is to support global advocacy and action to secure womens and girls rights. It would help if we could all make an effort to create a world fit for women and children to grow up safe and live happy and healthy.

Whether you’re a man or a woman, you’ll find his conclusions gripping.”—Jared Diamond There is a human genetic fluke that is surprisingly common, due to a change in a key pair of chromosomes. In the normal condition the two look the same, but in this disorder one is malformed and shrunken beyond recognition. The result is a shortened life span, higher mortality at all ages, an inability to reproduce, premature hair loss, and brain defects variously resulting in attention deficit, hyperactivity, conduct disorder, hypersexuality, and an enormous excess of both outward and self-directed aggression. It is called maleness. Melvin Konner traces the arc of evolution to explain the relationships between women and men. With patience and wit he explores the knotty question of whether men are necessary in the biological destiny of the human race. He draws on multiple, colorful examples from the natural world—such as the mating habits of the octopus, black widow, angler fish, and jacana—and argues that maleness in humans is hardly necessary to the survival of the species. In characteristically humorous and engaging prose, Konner sheds light on our biologically different identities, while noting the poignant exceptions that challenge the male/female divide. We meet hunter-gatherers such as those in Botswana, whose culture gave women a prominent place, invented the working mother, and respected women’s voices around the fire. Recent human history has upset this balance, as a dense world of war fostered extreme male dominance. But our species has been recovering over the past two centuries, and an unstoppable move toward equality is afoot. It will not be the end of men, but it will be the end of male supremacy and a better, wiser world for women and men alike.
