Es bedarf jedoch weiterer Unterstützung von bildungsadministrativer Seite, um den Weg von der vereinzelten Einbindung nachhaltigkeitsrelevanter Themen in wenigen Unterrichtsfächern hin zu einer ganzheitlichen Umsetzung des Bildungsauftrags zu ebnen. Magdalena Buddeberg, ist Akademische Rätin a.Z. am Institut für Allgemeine Didaktik und Schulpädagogik (IADS), der Technischen Universität Dortmund, wo sie auch promoviert hat. Im Rahmen ihrer Promotionszeit arbeitete sie am Institut für Schulentwicklungsforschung (IFS) und war zugleich Promotionsstipendiatin an der Research School 'Education and Capabilities' der Universität Bielefeld und der Technischen Universität Dortmund. Zu ihren Arbeitsschwerpunkten gehören die Schulpädagogik und die empirische Bildungsforschung, darunter insbesondere Bildung für nachhaltige Entwicklung, Heterogenität im Bildungssystem sowie Zeit und Schule.

An dieser Stelle setzt die vorliegende Arbeit an, indem sie die beiden folgenden Fragen in den Mittelpunkt der Betrachtung stellt: 1. Welche Arten von Wissen, Einstellungen und Kompetenzen sollen Schüler/-innen im Rahmen der BNE erwerben? Sind die empfohlenen Ziele in normativer Hinsicht begründbar und aus empirischer Sicht realisierbar? 2. Durch welche Methoden und Verfahren kann das Lernen im Rahmen der BNE wirksam unterstützt werden? Wie können Lernprozesse im Sinne einer BNE effektiv initiiert und gefördert werden? Die Besonderheit der vorliegenden Arbeit besteht darin, dass sie versucht, durch die Integration theoretischer Analysen und empirischer Studien Antworten auf diese Fragen zu finden. Dr. habil. Werner Rieß ist Professor für Biologie und ihre Didaktik an der Pädagogischen Hochschule Freiburg. Seine Arbeitsschwerpunkte liegen in der empirischen Unterrichtsforschung im Rahmen der Bildung für nachhaltige Entwicklung, der Umweltbildung und des Faches Biologie. Er ist aktuell Sprecher des Promotionskollegs exMNU (Experimentieren im mathematisch-naturwissenschaftlichen Unterricht) und untersucht u.a. It is a shift of consciousness that dramatically and permanently alters our way of being in the world. Such a shift involves our understanding of ourselves and our self-locations; our relationships with other humans and with the natural world; our understanding of relations of power in interlocking structures of class, race and gender; our body awarenesses; our visions of alternative approaches to living; and our sense of possibilities for social justice and peace and personal joy. The editors of this collection make several challenges to the existing field of transformative learning - the first is to theoreticians, who have attempted to describe the nature of transformative learning without regard to the content of transformative learning. The editors argue that transformative learning theory cannot be constructed in a content-neutral or context-free way. Their second challenge, which assumes the importance content for transformative learning, is to educators as practitioners. The editors argue that transformative learning requires new educational practices consistent with the content. Arts-based research and arts-based teaching/learning practices are one example of such new educational practices. Education for the soul, or spiritual practices such as meditation or modified martial arts or indigenous peoples' forms of teaching/learning, is another example. Each article in the collection presents a possible model of these new practices.
