Book Synopsis Emergency Planning for Nuclear Power Plants by : Paul Elkmann
Download or read book Emergency Planning for Nuclear Power Plants written by Paul Elkmann and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-01-06 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a history of emergency planning with respect to nuclear power plant accidents from the 1950’s to the 2000’s. It gives an overview of essential concepts that a working emergency planner should know, including brief overviews of the health physics and plant engineering that applies to emergency planning. Each chapter covers topics unique to radiological planning that distinguish it from planning for natural disasters. Some of the topics include processes that damage fuel, reactor source terms, basic dispersion theory, protective measures for the public and emergency worker, environmental surveys, and the essential elements of a drill and exercise program. Emergency Planning for Nuclear Power Plants is not intended as a guide to meeting regulatory requirements but provides an understanding of the essential concepts and language of radiological planning, so the planner can apply those concepts to their particular situation.

Book Synopsis Nuclear Weapons by : United States. General Accounting Office
Download or read book Nuclear Weapons written by United States. General Accounting Office and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In response to a congressional request, GAO reviewed the Department of Defense's (DOD) policies and practices for coordinating emergency planning for nuclear weapon accidents with states and localities. GAO found that: (1) although the Air Force coordinates its emergency planning for all types of disasters, the Army and Navy generally exclude state and local governments from coordinated planning efforts for national security reasons; (2) some state and local emergency preparedness officials desire more communication with Army and Navy installations in emergency planning; (3) a national nuclear weapon accident exercise showed a need for more coordination because of the complexities involved in responding to such accidents and the hazards of radioactive contamination; (4) the services and civilian authorities coordinate emergency planning for other disasters; and (5) the Army and Navy could achieve emergency planning with states and localities for accidents involving nuclear weapons without violating DOD security policies.

Book excerpt: In 1986, the Three Mile Island Public Health Fund commissioned a national team of researchers to prepare an alternative emergency plan for the region around the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant. This nontechnical book, addressed to emergency workers, the public and policymakers, presents the results of their research in the form of a bold plan that is applicable to any nuclear plant emergency. It builds on the principles that local knowledge is valuable, not unsophisticated, that communities are adaptive, not inflexible, and that information must be made available and accessible to the people who most need it.

Book Synopsis Long-Term Health Monitoring of Populations Following a Nuclear or Radiological Incident in the United States by : National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
Download or read book Long-Term Health Monitoring of Populations Following a Nuclear or Radiological Incident in the United States written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-08-30 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accidents and terrorist attacks that lead to the release of radioactive materials can cause deaths, injuries, and a range of psychosocial effects in the surrounding community and team of emergency responders. In the United States, federal, state, and local agencies respond with the necessary resources to address the consequences of nuclear and radiological incidents and monitor the affected population. Following the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident and the 2017 Gotham Shield National Level Exercise, the CDC recognized an opportunity to improve their practices by establishing a more efficient and timely health effect surveillance system before another incident occurs. On March 12-13th, 2019, the National Academies convened a workshop to discuss the process for preparing a radiation registry for monitoring long-term health effects of populations affected by a nuclear or radiological incident. Participants assessed existing information, useful practices, and tools for planning a radiation registry that will enhance incident monitoring and response methods. This publication summarizes the discussions and presentations from the workshop.
