Book excerpt: Embracing Survival, a memoir by Dydine Umunyana, tells the story of the Rwandan Genocide against the Tutsis at the hands of the Hutu perpetrators in Rwanda (1994) through the eyes of the four-year-old-child that she was when the horrific massacre occurred. Separated from her family, she barely survived the conflict. While the physical killing finally stopped, the mental and emotional 'killing' continued, affecting her and her family. She writes that "I have learned that we cannot do for others what we cannot do for ourselves. By nourishing the light within ourselves, we find strength we never knew was there....I came to realize that one's own life experiences are not theirs to keep but ours to teach."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When we learn to embrace the dance with our Creator and Savior, God begins to move mountains in our lives and He begins to restore the years of our youth the locusts have taken away. Consider the nation of Egypt after the seven years of plenty when the seven years of famine began. By the time the famine was over, everything belonged to the Egyptian Pharaoh and everyone and everything was Pharaohs possession. It had become a socialistic culture and the government controlled it all. During their times of trial in the seven year famine, that was not the case of the Israelites who had turned to embrace their dance with God. Israel resided in the land of Goshen. God blessed them in a powerful way because they sought divine guidance and provisions from Jehovah. The question we need to ask ourselves today in times of trials; are we going to surrender everything we have to the government expecting hand outs in return, or are we going to the Creator of the universe, who holds the entire universe in the palm of His hand? Louie Giglio said it best in his tour The Heart of Passion, when he stated We serve a Ginormous God! It is my desire that the reading of this book will restore unto you the years of your life the locusts of sin have taken from you so that you can genuinely embrace the dance with God in a powerful way.

Book excerpt: Pacific Book: “This book can be quite eye opening to Christians and non-Christians alike...” Clarion "The self-help text Discovering and Embracing Your Life Purpose encourages developing an understanding of God’s personalized plan for each person...” Blue ink “The author is undeniably encouraging and accomplishes his goal of providing doable steps for discovering our purpose in life...” This book has been my dream to write. It truly is my life’s purpose illustrated in words. It begins by taking you on a personal journey by peering into a man by the name of Tim and his life. We do not come by knowing our purpose when we first entered this world. There are no instructions or clear guidelines given to us, but there are clues. Many of us never even find our purpose and thus never live the life we were created for. My attempt in this book is to provide the clues or “Puzzle pieces” that I believe were not only put within us to find but are also discovered outside of us through life choices (good and bad). Tim’s story illustrates how in his life and mistakes he made he was able to discover some of those clues and be able to take Pain and turn it into triumph and purpose. For us to understand our purpose and reason for our very existence it entails that we start asking some questions and start searching for answers. Although finding one’s purpose is not necessarily easy it is worth the search as once you find your purpose you find fulfillment, joy, love, and a sense of meaning. Each chapter is another puzzle piece to help you discover what your purpose may be. Personally, I discovered mine after much pain and a lot of mistakes. Ultimately, I found it in my relationship with God. As you read you will begin to find and discover the clues to your purpose and my hope is it will keep you motivated to keep searching. As you venture through the book you will begin to discover your strengths, talents, gifts, passions, temperament, Love Language, Personality style, and Personality type. Various assessments, and tests have been provided as well as web sites to assist to identify each of these areas to help you better understand what you purpose is. My hope is that as you better understand yourself and what makes you who you are your Purpose will be revealed. Once you do then I believe your life will unfold with a greater sense of meaning and purpose with a desire to live out your purpose in service to others. I end with these 2 quotes. “There is no greater calling than to serve your fellow men, there is no greater contribution than to help the weak, there is no greater satisfaction than to have done it well” Walter Reuther. “Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many” Mathew 20:28.

The reward is wisdom, serenity, and deeper self-knowledge. In the first half of life we strive, work, compete, achieve, and accumulate. Will we do this until we die? Because we live in a world that worships youth, aging in America isn't pleasant; we have no imagination for the spiritual adventure that aging offers. While Embracing Wisdom doesn't shirk from the real challenges of this time of life, it points to a new understanding of how to experience loss not as tragedy but as compost for wisdom. Based upon the pioneering work of Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, Embracing Wisdom: Soaring in the Second Half of Life presents aging in the 21st Century as the newest frontier in human development. It sets a path and purpose for the boomer generation to complete life successfully and leave a legacy to future generations.

Book excerpt: Plucked from a humble nomad family to become the leader of one of Tibet’s oldest Buddhist lineages, the young Seventeenth Karmapa draws on timeless values to create an urgent ethic for today’s global community. We have always been, and will always be, interconnected—through family, community, and shared humanity. As our planet changes and our world grows smaller, it is vital we not only recognize our connections to one another and to the earth but also begin actively working together as interdependent individuals to create a truly global society. The Karmapa, Ogyen Trinley Dorje, is uniquely positioned to guide us in this process. Drawing on years of intensive Buddhist training and a passionate commitment to social issues, he teaches how we can move from a merely intellectual understanding to a fully lived experience of connection. By first seeing, then feeling, and finally living these connections, we can become more effective agents of social and ethical change. The Karmapa shows us how gaining emotional awareness of our connectedness can fundamentally reshape the human race. He then guides us to action, showing step by step how we can change the way we use the earth’s resources and can continue to better our society. In clear language, the Karmapa draws connections between such seemingly far-flung issues as consumer culture, loneliness, animal protection, and self-reliance. In the process, he helps us move beyond theory to practical and positive social and ethical change.

Triumphalism has infected too many of the adherents in the Abrahamic religious traditions, and must be neutralized by the growth of epistemic humility using a tactic like the five step strategy suggested in this book.

Book excerpt: An insightful, inspiring, “candid and warm” (Booklist) memoir from Karamo Brown—beloved culture expert from Netflix’s Queer Eye—as he shares his story for the first time, exploring how the challenges in his own life have allowed him to forever transform the lives of those in need. When Karamo Brown first auditioned for the casting directors of Queer Eye, he knew he wouldn’t win the role of culture expert by discussing art and theater. Instead he decided to redefine what “culture” could—and should—mean for the show. He took a risk and declared, “I am culture.” After all, Karamo believes culture is how people feel about themselves and others, how they relate to the world around them, and how their shared labels, burdens, and experiences affect their daily lives in ways both subtle and profound. Seen through this lens, Karamo is culture: his family is Jamaican and Cuban; he was raised in the South in predominantly white neighborhoods and attended an HBCU (Historically Black College/University); he was trained as a social worker and psychotherapist; he overcame personal issues of colorism, physical and emotional abuse, alcohol and drug addiction, and public infamy; he is a proud and dedicated gay single father of two boys, one biological and one adopted. In “this soul-soothing memoir” (O, The Oprah Magazine), Karamo reflects on his lifelong education. It comprises every adversity he has overcome, as well as the lessons he has learned along the way. It is only by exploring our difficulties and having the hard conversations—with ourselves and one another—that we are able to adjust our mind-sets, heal emotionally, and move forward to live our best lives. “During every episode of Queer Eye, there’s at least one touching moment where Karamo Brown drops some serious wisdom about self-love and makes everybody cry. His moving memoir about overcoming adversity captures that feeling in book form” (HelloGiggles).

Once again, Townes brings together essays by leading womanist theologians, interweaving a concern for matters of race, gender, and class, as these bear on the survival and well-being of the African-American community.
