Book excerpt: Elvis Style: From Zoot Suits to Jumpsuits celebrates the innovative style-world of Elvis Presley - the man who singlehandedly changed the way that America, and much of the world beyond, dressed. The comprehensive, full colour book highlights not only the impact that Elvis made during his lifetime, but also his enduring influence on contemporary design culture – from pop stars and high-end fashion houses, to contemporary Rockabilly-fused street style. Elvis Style focuses on Elvis’ wonderfully expressive hairstyles, clothes, cars, and interiors, offering the reader an intriguing and insightful journey though the crazy, cool and at times kitsch world of a true megastar. Elvis Style speaks to a number of leading design experts to shed fresh light on Elvis’ design choices and influence. These include Sex & the City stylist Patricia Fields, Academy Award winning costume designer Mark Bridges, Elvis’ personal car-customizer George Barris, and Hal Lansky of Lansky Bros (Elvis’ favorite tailoring house), who has written the foreword. Elvis Style includes over 175 photos, many of which show rarely seen before Elvis-worn garments, interiors and cars from The King’s extensive private collection.

Book excerpt: In 1948, thirteen-year-old Elvis Presley and his family moved from Tupelo, Mississippi, to Memphis, Tennessee, thus beginning one of the great romances of our time. Elvis loved Memphis, and Memphis loved him back. As the young rock-and-roller's fame rose, he became inextricably linked with the city he called home. Today, if there is a single name that is synonymous with Memphis, it is Elvis Presley. Rich with anecdotes, Memphis Elvis-Style is the definitive guidebook to the King's city. Stories told by Elvis' peers and acquaintances add context as the book traces Elvis' life from the apartments, record shops, and churches where he dreamed of stardom to the recording studios, nightclubs, and radio stations where those dreams became reality. Aside from well-known spots like Graceland and Sun Studios, the book provides an intimate look at many lesser-known places that nevertheless played a vital role in Elvis' life. From the restaurants where he ate to the dealerships where he bought his cars, to the stages where he performed, this book tells the inside story of the King's love affair with his hometown. With updated descriptions, photographs, driving directions to all of the sites, suggested songs to enhance your drive, and an accompanying app, Memphis Elvis-Style truly is the only way to see Memphis through the eyes of Elvis. The companion app is available for Apple and Android devices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: That voice, those eyes, that hair, the cars, the girls...Elvis Presley revolutionized American pop culture when, at the age of twenty-one, he became the world's first modern superstar. A Memphis Beau Brummel even before he found fame, Elvis had a personal style that, like his music, had such a direct impact on his audience that it continues to influence us to this day. Elvis Presley compellingly examines Elvis' life and style to reveal the generous, complex, spiritual man behind the fourteen-carat-gold sunglasses and answers the question, "Why does Elvis matter?" "Elvis Presley is the greatest cultural force in the twentieth century," proclaimed Leonard Bernstein. By any measure, Presley's life was remarkable. From his modest beginnings in a two-room house to his meteoric rise to international fame, everything about his life -- his outsized talent to his car collection -- clamored for attention. And he got it; even today, Elvis continues to fascinate. Written with the assistance of Elvis Presley Enterprises, Pamela Clarke Keogh's biography draws on extensive research and interviews with Presley friends and family, among them Priscilla Presley, Joe Esposito, Jerry Schilling, Larry Geller, Bernard Lansky, famed Hollywood photographer Bob Willoughby, and designer Bill Belew. Offered access to the Graceland archives, the author considered thousands of images, selecting more than one hundred color and black-and-white photographs for this book, many of them rarely seen before. Both a significant biography of the greatest entertainer of our time and a provocative celebration of what Presley means to America today, Elvis Presley introduces the man behind the myth, a very human superstar beloved by millions.

Book excerpt: Although the importance of Elvis Presley's Southern heritage has long been recognized, few have considered the complex connection between the performer's career and his Southern roots. This study investigates how that identity affected each stage of Presley's career. Elvis Presley's career can be divided into three phases, each of which is signified by a specific image. Each image is coded by a certain style of music, mode of dress, and arena of performance. The evolution from one career phase to another was instigated by a specific event and represented a deliberate calculation on the part of Presley's manager to attract a wider audience. The first stage spans the years 1956 through 1958, after the singer was introduced to a national audience and before he was drafted into the army. His image as a notorious rock 'n' roller created a national controversy and was spurred by negative depictions of Presley in the media-many attributing his controversial performing style and appearance to his Southern background. His music was a fusion of rhythm and blues and country-western; or, two types of music indigenous to the South and foreign to the mainstream entertainment industry based in New York City. The second phase of Elvis' career included his stint as a movie star, in which most aspects of his Southern identity were extracted from his leading man image to enhance his appeal to the mainstream. And, finally, the last stage of his career focused on his image as a Las Vegas performer. Despite the gaudy costumes, Elvis reconnected to his identity as a Southerner in the 1970s by returning to country music and songwriters as a source of inspiration.

Book excerpt: If you love Elvis you will love this book. Everything you wanted to know about Elvis in astonishing detail: his life, his love of music, his movies and his career. 'If you had just landed on this planet and had no idea who Elvis Presley was, you might listen to a song and say, 'That's good', but if you walked into an arena and watched him perform, it would be a different beast altogether. He had incredible stage presence. If you want to know what the 'X Factor' really is, watch Elvis Presley' from the Foreword by Russell Watson. On Tuesday 16 August 1977 Elvis Presley collapsed and died in the bathroom of his home in Memphis. He was 42 years old. The media went into overdrive. On the news, there were pictures of fans weeping and late-night vigils. There were special supplements in the newspapers and experts analysed his career – the good and the bad, but never the ugly. Once again, Elvis Presley was the biggest-selling record artist on the planet. Spencer Leigh, renowned biographer, has written a masterful account about Elvis. He delves into how music became an integral part of the America's Deep South - Elvis' birthplace. He discusses what separated Elvis from his contemporaries, just how old was Priscilla when they first met, his bizarre relationship with his manager Colonel Parker, how did he reinvent himself for Las Vegas and most importantly, why did he have to die so young?

Book excerpt: Weaving the story of the King's personal and public life with detailed descriptions of the locations in Memphis that served as the setting for his musical education and evolution, this pop culture guide offers a refreshingly even-handed account of Elvis Presley's life. Elvis came to Memphis as a 13-year-old boy, and within a few years, he was shocking and seducing the world with a mixture of moves and sounds he had first seen and heard in the city's streets, churches, and bars. This comprehensive tour of places on which Elvis left his mark includes the Peabody Hotel, where he had his senior prom; Ellis Auditorium, where he played his first show; the Sun Studio, where he recorded his first singles; Lansky Brothers Clothiers, where he bought his suits; and Graceland, where he lived with his wife Priscilla and died in 1977. Anecdotes about each of the locations and how they shaped Elvis's personal and musical identity enhance the travel information, while street maps and a handy size make this book an invaluable companion to Memphis visitors and lovers of rock and roll.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elvis Presley stands tall as perhaps the supreme icon of 20th-century U.S. culture. But he was perceived to be deeply un-American in his early years as his controversial adaptation of rhythm and blues music and gyrating on-stage performances sent shockwaves through Eisenhower's conservative America and far beyond. This book explores Elvis Presley's global transformation from a teenage rebel figure into one of the U.S.'s major pop-cultural embodiments from a historical perspective. It shows how Elvis's rise was part of an emerging transnational youth culture whose political impact was heavily conditioned by the Cold War. As well as this, the book analyses Elvis's stint as G.I. soldier in West Germany, where he acted as an informal ambassador for the so-called American way of life and was turned into a deeply patriotic figure almost overnight. Yet, it also suggests that Elvis's increasingly synonymous identity with U.S. culture ultimately proved to be a double-edged sword, as the excesses of his superstardom and personal decline seemingly vindicated long-held stereotypes about the allegedly materialistic nature of U.S. society. Tracing Elvis's story from his unlikely rise in the 1950s right up to his tragic death in August 1977, this book offers a riveting account of changing U.S. identities during the Cold War, shedding fresh light on the powerful role of popular music and consumerism in shaping images of the United States during the cultural struggle between East and West.

Despite an avalanche of books on his life, there are, surprisingly, few about his musical creativity. In Counting Down Elvis: His 100 Finest Songs, Mark Duffett urges readers to put aside the misleading stereotypes and rumor-filled debates about Elvis and listen once again to the legend who emerged from Memphis. Elvis had a unique approach to music—one that was both powerful and versatile. In a career stretching across more than twenty years, Presley changed the face of popular music, drawing together genres—from country and blues to contemporary folk—and placing a unique stamp on all of them. Counting Down Elvis: His 100 Finest Songs explores the full range of Presley recordings, from his earliest numbers to posthumous hits, combing through gold records and unpolished gems to distill the best that Presley has to offer.

What accounts for the difference between the mega-success of Madonna and a thousand other wannabees waiting in the wings? Why did JK Rowling succeed where so many others aspiring writers have failed? And what was it about the slightly neurotic and mediocre schoolboy Sigmund Freud that ensured his position as one of the most brilliant and original thinkers in history? In this engrossing new book, Taylor builds on his theory that feeling like an ‘outsider’ from an early age, whether consciously or subconsciously not fitting into the norm, creates an edge that can drive outstanding success in later life. To this core philosophy Taylor adds a new ingredient: that of creativity, and he explores the interplay of these two factors—a lack of belonging and creativity—in the lives of a sparkling cast of individuals. Go beyond the glitz and glamour to discover how creative energy, harnessed to produce lives and works of extraordinary genius, can often exist against a backdrop of personal struggle and despair. From childhood outsider to adult icon, understand the journey of the following celebrities: Brad Pitt • Elvis Presley • Frieda Kahlo • Walt Disney • Sigmund Freud • Albert Einstein • Andy Warhol • Coco Chanel • David Beckham • Dan Brown • John Lennon • Sir Edmund Hillary • JK Rowling • Angelina Jolie • Tiger Woods • Amelia Earhart • Madonna
