Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scientific disciplines of hydrology and hydrogeology are expanding as the Earth's water is being recognized by governments and individuals as a shrinking resource—no entity can afford to take water for granted. At the present time, there is no single reference source for definitions. The Encyclopedic Dictionary of Hydrogeology is a practical, comprehensive reference guide with complete definitions of terms in hydrogeology and other fields closely related to water practices. This concise reference not only defines terms and concepts, but also provides a clear explanation of key elements so that an in-depth understanding of processes may be obtained. - With more than 2,000 entries, from "absolute permeability" to the "Z-R relationship", this dictionary features the most up-to-date vocabulary in hydrology and hydrogeology. This dictionary would be of use to practicing scientists and professionals in all the fields of water science - More than 340 graphs, tables and diagrams complement the entries in order to clarify terms, methods, or processes - Essential reference for students, academics, consultants, and practitioners in hydrology, hydrogeology, environmental engineering, environmental law, and the government

This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dictionary contains terms in the areas of hydrology, hydrogeology, environmental science and related disciplines. It has been compiled to facilitate an understanding of the literature on water problems for English-speaking and Russian-speaking specialists and to promote their personal communication. When selecting terms for the dictionary, emphasis was placed on concepts related to the study, management, and protection of natural waters as an environmental component. The dictionary also covers some terms defining concepts of allied sciences used in studying water resources. This dictionary represents the modern level of knowledge in the areas of hydrology, hydrogeology, environmental science, geology, geophysics, geochemistry, well-drilling technology, soil science, agricultural chemistry, and climatology, including modeling and methods of prediction. It is of interest to a broad community of specialists - hydrologists, hydrogeologists, environmentalists, hydrochemists, hydraulic engineers, and water managers.

This book was released on 1990 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last twenty years there have been new developments in the field of hydrogeology and an enlargement of the scope into environmental concerns. This dictionary incorporates the terms that have become important in the vocabulary of environmental hydrogeology to do justice to these new developments. It is in part a revised and enlarged edition of "Elsevier's Dictionary of Hydrogeology" which was published in 1969. Approximately two thirds of the material in this dictionary is new. The terms covered deal with the geology of groundwater within the framework of the hydrologic cycle, geohydrology, contaminant hydrology, computer application to groundwater and subsurface pollution problems, environmental implications of groundwater use, regulatory aspects of groundwater protection, wellhead protection programs, interaction of groundwater systems with biogeochemical cycles, geochemistry of natural waters and contaminant chemistry, and water resources management. The group of readers for which this work is intended are: earth scientists (earth-surface processes, hydrology, groundwater geology, groundwater flow, contaminant hydrology); environmental engineers (waste management and disposal, remedial activities in contaminated sites, environmental protection strategies, monitoring of pollution); environmental regulators, legislators, administrators, and consulting engineers in hydrogeology and hydrology.

Download or read book Elsevier's Dictionary of Soil Science written by A. Canarache and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2006-10-17 with total page 1355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dictionary includes some 9200 terms, each with a definition and often and additional descriptive text in English, the terms being translated in French, German and Spanish. It is more complete than similar previously published dictionaries or glossaries, and contains all fields of soil science as well as some adjacent fields of other earth sciences, agriculture and engineering. Present concepts and definitions are detailed along with earlier concepts, not only for historical reasons but also for developing new ideas. Concepts, terms and definitions usual in literature of various countries are discussed and compared, to offer an appropriate exchange of ideas. Soil classifications and methodologies for soil investigation coming from a score of European, American and other countries and international organisations are presented, and correlations between names of soil taxa in different classifications are suggested. Readers active in all branches of soil science will find accessible answers to many of their questions, either directly referring to procedures used in the organisations where they work, or related to way of thinking in other countries. Readers active in other branches, but needing information on soils, will also find answers to this dictionary of great assistance to their research.* Over 9200 terms with definitions in English and translations in French, German, Spanish* Includes all fields of soil science and many connected sciences* All present-day terminology with inclusion of earlier, classical concepts and terms * Terminology in current USDA Soil Taxonomy, FAO World Reference Base or Soil Resources, and other documents from different countriesGranted the "N.Cernescu" award from the Romanian Academy on Agricultural and Forestry Sciences

Book Synopsis Elsevier's Dictionary of Geography by : Vladimir Kotlyakov
Download or read book Elsevier's Dictionary of Geography written by Vladimir Kotlyakov and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2006-12-20 with total page 1073 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geography is a system of highly developed sciences about the environment. Geographical science embracing the study of the Earth's physical phenomena, people and their economic activities has always been in need of an extensive terminology. Geographical terms are related to the terms of natural sciences (physics, chemistry, biology, geology, etc.) and humanities (history, economics, sociology, etc.) since geography is based on these fundamental subjects. Geography includes a number of disciplines and subdivisions which appeared along with the development of the science In spite of being very different geographical disciplines have some common tools of investigation which is maps, comparative method of exploration, remote sensing, geoinformation systems. Today very well developed terminologies of all the specialist fields of geography and related subjects exist in the main world languages. However, they are not always well-correlated. Nowadays geographical terminology requires unification and international correlation more than ever before. Hence the idea of compiling a multilingual polydisciplinary dictionary. The Dictionary consists of the basic table of terms arranged according to the order of the English alphabet with each term numbered. Each entry consists of the term in English and its equivalents in Russian, French, German, Spanish. Short definitions of terms are given in English and in Russian. The terms are supplied with the necessary grammar labels, such as gender of nouns, plural number, etc. The Dictionary combines two functions: that of a defining dictionary and that of a bilingual dictionary. These two functions are basically contradictory because usually the defining dictionary is aimed at giving one meaning of the word which is the main and essential one, while the bilingual dictionary tries to give different equivalents of a given word in the other language in order to supply the user with maximum possible translations, differing in the shades of meanings, thus giving him the possibility to choose the appropriate word. But in our Dictionary we intentionally decided to combine the two functions – defining and multilingual, because a short definition of the term and equivalents in other languages help to achieve our main aim which consists in showing the basic geographical terminology and harmonizing it in several languages. Having this into consideration we deliberately mixed two types of dictionaries in one. - Organized alphabetically via English - Provides short definition of geographical terms in English and Russian - Includes multilingual translation of terms from English to Russian, French, German, Spanish
