Book excerpt: This book has its roots in a series of collaborations in the last decade at the interface between statistical physics and cosmology. The speci?c problem which initiated this research was the study of the clustering properties of galaxies as revealed by large redshift surveys, a context in which concepts of modern statistical physics (e. g. scale-invariance, fractality. . ) ?nd ready application. In recent years we have considerably broadened the range of problems in cosmology which we have addressed, treating in particular more theoretical issues about the statistical properties of standard cosmological models. What is common to all this research, however, is that it is informed by a perspective and methodology which is that of statistical physics. We can say that, beyond its speci?c scienti?c content, this book has an underlying thesis: such interdisciplinary research is an exciting playground for statistical physics, and one which can bring new and useful insights into cosmology. The book does not represent a ?nal point, but in our view, a marker in the development of this kind of research, which we believe can go very much further in the future. Indeed as we complete this book, new developments - which unfortunately we have not been able to include here - have been made on some of the themes described here. Our focus in this book is on the problem of structure in cosmology.

Thus, to aid the design, development and industrialization of new materials, robust computational homogenization methods are indispensable. The present thesis is devoted to investigating and developing FFT-based micromechanics solvers for efficiently computing the (thermo)mechanical response of nonlinear composite materials with complex microstructures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews some of the classic aspects in the theory of phase transitions and critical phenomena, which has a long history. Recently, these aspects are attracting much attention due to essential new contributions. The topics presented in this book include : mathematical theory of the Ising model; equilibrium and non-equilibrium criticality of one-dimensional quantum spin chains; influence of structural disorder on the critical behaviour of the Potts model; criticality, fractality and multifractality of linked polymers; field-theoretical approaches in the super conducting phase transitions. The book is based on the review lectures that were given in Lviv (Ukraine) in March 2002 at the "Ising lectures" - a traditional annual workshop on phase transitions and critical phenomena which aims to bring together scientists working in the field of phase transitions with university students and those who are interested in the subject.

This book was released on 1995-02-13 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main subject of this book can be viewed in various ways. From the standpoint of functional analysis, it studies spectral properties of a certain class of linear operators; from the viewpoint of probability theory, it is concerned with the analysis of singular Markov processes; and, from the vantage point of mathematical physics, it analyzes the dynamics of equilibrium systems in quantum statistical physics and quantum field theory. Malyshev and Minlos describe two new approaches to the subject which have not been previously treated in monograph form. They also present background material which makes the book accessible and useful to researchers and graduate students working in functional analysis, probability theory, and mathematical physics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bioelectric and Biomagnetic Fields: Theory and Applications in Electrocardiology begins with a general description of the development of extracellular bioelectric and biomagnetic fields and the methods used in their analysis and measurement. The most effective electrodynamic models and most modern approaches to topographical (synchronous multilead) measurements of the field are reviewed. The next section discusses the major approaches to analysis of the inverse problem with a detailed description of multipole technique applied to the bioelectric and biomagnetic fields measured on or near the body surface. Special emphasis is placed on the interrelationship between the electric and magnetic fields of the same bioelectric generator. The last section explains the new approaches to chronotopographical representation of the electrophysiological characteristics deduced from the parameters of the bioelectric generator. The text includes the most recent experimental protocols and results from studies in electro- and magnetocardiology and electro- and magnetoneurology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally, philosophers of quantum mechanics have addressed exceedingly simple systems: a pair of electrons in an entangled state, or an atom and a cat in Dr. Schrödinger's diabolical device. But recently, much more complicated systems, such as quantum fields and the infinite systems at the thermodynamic limit of quantum statistical mechanics, have attracted, and repaid, philosophical attention. Interpreting Quantum Theories has three entangled aims. The first is to guide those familiar with the philosophy of ordinary QM into the philosophy of 'QM infinity', by presenting accessible introductions to relevant technical notions and the foundational questions they frame. The second aim is to develop and defend answers to some of those questions. Does quantum field theory demand or deserve a particle ontology? How (if at all) are different states of broken symmetry different? And what is the proper role of idealizations in working physics? The third aim is to highlight ties between the foundational investigation of QM infinity and philosophy more broadly construed, in particular by using the interpretive problems discussed to motivate new ways to think about the nature of physical possibility and the problem of scientific realism.

Book excerpt: The new edition of this well received primer on rigorous aspects of symmetry breaking presents a more detailed and thorough discussion of the mechanism of symmetry breaking in classical field theory in relation with the Noether theorem. Moreover, the link between symmetry breaking without massless Goldstone bosons in Coulomb systems and in gauge theories is made more explicit. A subject index has been added and a number of misprints have been corrected.
