Book Synopsis Kant on the Rationality of Morality by : Paul Guyer
Download or read book Kant on the Rationality of Morality written by Paul Guyer and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2019-07-25 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kant claims that the fundamental principle of morality is given by pure reason itself. Many have interpreted Kant to derive this principle from a conception of pure practical reason (as opposed to merely prudential reasoning about the most effective means to empirically given ends). But Kant maintained that there is only one faculty of reason, although with both theoretical and practical applications. This Element shows how Kant attempted to derive the fundamental principle and goal of morality from the general principles of reason as such, defined by the principles of non-contradiction and sufficient reason and the ideal of systematicity.

Book Synopsis Subjective versus Objective Moral Wrongness by : Peter A. Graham
Download or read book Subjective versus Objective Moral Wrongness written by Peter A. Graham and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-15 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is presently a debate between Subjectivists and Objectivists about moral wrongness. Subjectivism is the view that the moral status of our actions, whether they are morally wrong or not, is grounded in our subjective circumstances – either our beliefs about, or our evidence concerning, the world around us. Objectivism, on the other hand, is the view that the moral status of our actions is grounded in our objective circumstances – all those facts other than those which comprise our subjective circumstances. A third view, Ecumenism, has it that the moral status of our actions is grounded both in our subjective and our objective circumstances. After outlining and evaluating the various arguments both against Subjectivism and against Objectivism, this Element offers a tentative defense of Objectivism about moral wrongness.
Book Synopsis Formulas of the Moral Law by : Allen Wood
Download or read book Formulas of the Moral Law written by Allen Wood and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Element defends a reading of Kant's formulas of the moral law in Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals. It disputes a long tradition concerning what the first formula (Universal Law/Law of Nature) attempts to do. The Element also expounds the Formulas of Humanity, Autonomy and the Realm of Ends, arguing that it is only the Formula of Humanity from which Kant derives general duties, and that it is only the third formula (Autonomy/Realm of Ends) that represents a complete and definitive statement of the moral principle as Kant derives it in the Groundwork. The Element also disputes the claim that the various formulas are 'equivalent', arguing that this claim is either false or else nonsensical because it is grounded on a false premise about what Kant thinks a moral principle is for.

Book Synopsis Conflict, Contradiction, and Contrarian Elements in Moral Development and Education by : Larry Nucci
Download or read book Conflict, Contradiction, and Contrarian Elements in Moral Development and Education written by Larry Nucci and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2005-01-15 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The premise of this book is that individuals and societies have an inexorable urge to morally develop by challenging the assumptions of the previous generation in terms of what is right and wrong. The focus is on the nature and functional value of conflicts and challenges to the dominant moral and social values framework. Through this analysis, individuals develop moral character through conflict with their local authority figures, including parents. The moral structure of societies evolves through intergenerational challenges to and contradictions with the dominant social order. The book is divided into three parts to help frame this discussion: *Part I directly takes up the issue of resistance as it occurs at a cultural level, and the implications of such resistance for moral education and socialization. *Part II explores the normative forms of adolescent resistance and contrarian behavior that vex parents and teachers alike. *Part III brings back the issue of societal structure and culture to illustrate how negative features of society--such as racial discrimination and economic disparity--can feed into the construction of negative moral identity in youth posing challenges to moral education. Taken together, this collection presents a rich counterpoint to the pictures of moral growth as the progressive sophistication of moral reasoning or the gradual accretion of moral virtues and cultural values. It will benefit those in developmental, social, and cognitive psychology, as well as sociology, political science, and education.
