Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Bond Investment The material for the book has been gathered during the author's experience of more than a decade as bond statistician and investment analyst in which he has been brought into close touch with private investors, bond salesmen, and students of investment. Certain details of the handling, however, are the result of a series of discussions of the subject before the bond salesmen of The Equitable Trust Company of New York, serving to focus attention upon points as to which information is particularly desired at the present time, on the part alike of investors and of those engaged in the bond business. The author wishes to express his appreciation of the encouragement and assistance rendered by Mr. Morris K. Parker, in charge of the Bond Department of The Equitable Trust Company and the members of his staff. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bonds and Stocks: The Elements of Successful Investing Consols were selling at 112, or thereabouts, and they have since dropped to around 50. When we consider that practically the best investment in the world can behave in this manner, are we not some times justified in being sceptical in regard to the securities which are being offered at the present day? The British Consols are not the only securities, of course, which have shown this decline, since practically all the conservative bonds have dropped in a similar manner. The cause of this great decline is that the investing public seeks securities which pay a greater income than 3 and The field which has naturally opened up to them is that of Public Utilities which, a few years ago, were considered anything but conservative. There are many securities of electric railways, lighting, telephone, industrial, and water power properties which today form a very desirable form of invest ment. One, however, must be thoroughly informed on the fundamental principles underlying the secu rity of these newer issues, as well as other classes of investments, before making any purchases. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Bond Investment The purpose of the Ronograph Library is to provide a comprehensive source of information on the many varied problems arising from day to day in the conduct of business. It is the plan of the series to discuss each topic completely in a single compact, thorough volume. Although these books are produced at a price which makes them available to every one, accuracy and authority are not sacrificed in their preparation. In this volume of the Library the author outlines the basic principles, of investment and discusses financial statements from the investment point of view. He classifies the various forms of investment bonds, giving specific treatment to national government bonds; state, county and municipal issues; railroad, public utility and industrial bonds. As every man engaged in business is either an actual or a potential investor, this volume has been brought into the series of quick-reference manuals which constitute the Ronograph Library. Excerpt: ...of results may as well leave these bonds which have an extra high current income to other investors who place exceptional weight on that point. The bonds having a low current annual income but a higher yield according to the bond tables are more to his advantage in the end. Or, to come at the matter from the opposite direction, bonds paying a low rate of interest are likely to be a better bargain than bonds paying a high rate of interest but showing the same yield. A 4% bond yielding 6% is likely, other things being equal, to be a better bond than a bond yielding 6%. A 4% bond yielding 6% is probably entitled to as good an investment rating as a 6% bond yielding 5.75% or even less. The investor will of course bear in mind that this is only one element in bond values. I have discussed it rather fully because it has heretofore been neglected. Especially, the reluctance of many investors to buy bonds selling considerably above par sometimes has an influence directly opposite to that here discussed. Effect of Taxation on Bond Values The state of affairs in regard to the taxation of bonds, considering the country as a whole, can only be described as a disgraceful mess. In nearly all states bonds are considered as intangible personal property and as such are subject to_ the regular personal property tax, which is sometimes so high that it becomes an important factor. But many owners of bonds have a way of forgetting that bonds are personal property when the tax assessor comes around--in fact, there are very few subjects in regard to which memory is more treacherous. It is also to be borne in mind that the rate per cent. of the personal property tax in any locality, when taken alone, does not tell what the taxes are. The rate of assessment is...

If the bond is bought at par, the realized semi-annual interest equals the semi annual payment, and the investment remains the same. If the bond is bought below par, the realized semi-annual interest on the money invested exceeds the semi-annual payment, and, by the addition of this excess, the investment gradually rises to par. If the bond is bought above par, the semi-annual payment exceeds the realized semi-annual interest, and, by the withdrawal of this excess, the ih vestment gradually sinks to par. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The A B C of Bond Buying: How the Ordinary Judge Bond Values The principal object of these chapters is to aid the average investor in getting a working knowledge of the principles of bond buying which will be a practical help to him in making his investments. At the same time a number of points are brought out which are not without an element of novelty. They have occurred to other students of the subject but have not been emphasized and in some instances have not previously found their way into print. In order to make the book as comprehensive as possible some chapters have been very much condensed but it is believed that they will be easily intelligible to the careful reader. Generally speaking, the book is based more on the writer's actual experience in dealing with investors than upon the researches of other students of the subject. CHAPTER IV THE INVESTOR'S VOCABULARY Ten Words, The Meanings of Which Should Be Thoroughly Understood by Every Investor WHENEVER a large bond issue is publicly offered for sale in the leading newspapers and magazines, brokers are always asked certain questions relative to the meaning of various phrases used in their advertisements. A large number of advertisements of leading issues have been accumulated, and the various phrases assorted in order to select those most generally used, although commonly misunderstood by many investors. The result of this work has been the selection of ten phrases which in" a way explain ten characteristics of bond issues, all of which are herewith briefly described. The bond houses, when preparing advertisements, should give more attention to the small investor and prepare the copy of their advertisements with him more in mind. It is true that these advertisements are readily comprehended by the trained banker and large investor; but manjr of them are almost incomprehensible to the investor who is unacquainted with the technical phrases and terms employed. As the great need to-day of our corporations and bankers is to extend the market for bonds among the small investors, it is especially desirable that this suggestion be given most careful attention at this time. The Principal of a Bond All bonds are divided into two main divisions, namely, coupon bonds and registered bonds. A coupon bond consists of two parts, the principal and the coupons. Usually it is made up of two sheets of paper bound together, one sheet containing the note or written obligation which represents the principal, and the other sheet is made up of coupons. A registered bond, moreover, is simply the above described without the coupons;...
