Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Basis of Durable Peace: Written at the Invitation of the New York Times Recent utterances of the German Chancellor and the British Prime Minister have inclined the discerning public to the belief that the chief men of the warring nations in Europe would now give more hospitable consideration than they have shown in the past to proposals embodying the broad general principles upon which peace must be concluded. Sharing that belief, The New York Times invited, from a source the competence and authority of which would be recognized in both hemispheres, a series of contributions in which the terms of peace should be discussed. As the publication of the series proceeded from day to day the public perceived the candor, the impartial fairness, the breadth of view, and the profound understanding of political principles with which the author weighed and considered the general conditions of peace, and then in turn the policies and interests of each of the Powers engaged in the war. All of them profess a desire for peace upon terms that will insure its permanency. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bases of Durable Peace Realizing the scope and implications of President Wilson's statement of the war policies of the United States in his New York address of 27 September, 1918, and that no such sweeping and searching declaration of purpose in regard to the relations of nations to one another has ever before been made by the responsible head of a powerful nation in a time of world crisis and readjustment; Recalling that many of the wars that have devastated Europe in the past have had their roots in unjust conditions created or acquiesced in by treaties of peace that ignored the rights of peoples; Bearing in mind that this shocking war, that has finally involved the United States, has its causes in deep-seated injustice imbedded in existing European conditions and in the purpose of the Central Powers to perpetrate yet further injustice at the expense of neighboring nations assumed to be helpless; Seeing clearly that war can no longer be easily localized in a world of closely knit international relations and that, only through the establishment of substantial justice between the peoples of the world, can we in the United States hope, henceforth, to find peace for ourselves; And believing that the principles, so nobly conceived and so clearly set forth by the President, will, if put into effect by our Allies and ourselves, go far toward lifting from the world the nightmare of war and the social and economic burdens that it entails and will set free men's hands and minds and spirits for the nobler tasks of peace; We, the War Committee of the Union League Club of Chicago, hereby record our whole-hearted concurrence in the President's declaration of principles, and we pledge our best endeavors to the end that, so far as lies in the will and act of the United States, peace, when attained, shall not once more involve the bartering away of the rights of peoples in the interest of dynasties or of powerful states or groups of states, but shall square with the President's solemn declaration. The many important changes which have occurred in the statute law of the State during that time would have been of itself sufficient justification to the publishers for this issue. A slight examination of our labors will, however, as we trust, show that these labors have had other purposes in view than such as have reference to recent legislation upon the matters here treated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Structure of Lasting Peace: An Inquiry Into the Motives of War and Peace To my dear friend, Mr. George Bernard Donlin, editor of the Dial, of Chicago, this little essay owes its inception and completion. Early in the fall of 1917 he urged me to set down for the Dial these opinions of a pragmatist on the meaning of the state, its bearing on the nature and hopes of man, and on the possible future of international relations. I have done so, as well as I knew how, amid the stress and confusion of many other enterprises, each with an insistent claim on my attention. What here appears is reprinted substantially as was given to the public in the columns of the Dial. There is much that I should have liked, had circumstances been favorable, to have formulated otherwise, much that needs elaboration and expansion, not a little that since the essay was completed has been invalidated by events. Its main thesis, however, stands, confirmed and strengthened. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fundamental Peace Ideas The League of Nations may only be a first step in the direction of permanent peace, yet not a few persons seem doubtful of its utility. However, the league may be the lesser evil as compared with the old regime, which appears to have resulted in total failure after a very long and fair trial. Whatever be the ultimate outcome of the league and of the problems to be solved, the one encouraging thing is that all the people are thinking seriously on the subject and longing for some way to stop war. It may be true that lasting peace can only be secured when both people and leaders (sometimes the people lead the leaders) realize the necessity of peace and the senselessness of war. But to reach such a happy realiza tion of the truth what are we, the people, to do now? Already the dis eussions of the league (pro and con) have fertilized the soil; the minds of the people are open as never before and now is the supreme moment to sow peace seeds. The sooner, more thoroughly, and wider they are scattered, the better. In this way we may be able to so impress peace ideas upon everyone, as to avoid the terrible necessity of a future war, in which both sides become exhausted, as in the Thirty Years' War, which would be a much more horrible war than the present war. To escape such a catastrophe and make a league of nations or any kind of peace arrangements endure is preeminently an educational problem, and consists mainly in repeatedly filling the minds of the people, old and young, everywhere with fundamental peace conceptions. Shall we not begin at once and persist in doing this until political wars become as impossible in the future as religious wars are now? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sole Condition of Permanent Peace There is likewise no evident reason to anticipate that states so situated that one can war on another, with hope of advantage in either direction, will ever abstain through great periods of time from doing so. A part of the causes of past wars are certainly dis appearing; but the interests of nations will be able to conflict as long as the nations survive, and it is hard to imagine any complete scheme by which conflicting interests of independent and coordinate states can be kept from occasionally being settled by the test of war. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bulwarks of Peace Mankind are at length fully alive to the terrible evils of war. But, in order that everything possible may be done to avoid these evils in the future, it is necessary that those who influence the opinion of the various nations should have a clear apprehension of all the means which are available for the preservation of peace, and, at the same time, that they should appreciate the danger of placing excessive reliance upon the efficacy of any particular measure. At present there appears to be a disposition on the part of many generous minds to believe that the formation of a League of Nations for the purpose of preventing wars will in itself result in the practical maintenance of general peace. It certainly, indeed, seems probable that a confederacy of this kind, which has been advocated by several great thinkers in the course of the last few centuries, will be actually established at no distant date. Many years later Maxine Hong Kingston wrote a Fourth Book of Peace, but it too was burned--in the catastrophic Berkeley-Oakland Hills fire of 1991, a fire that coincided with the death of her father. Now in this visionary and redemptive work, Kingston completes her interrupted labor, weaving fiction and memoir into a luminous meditation on war and peace, devastation and renewal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How nations move from war to peace Is the world destined to suffer endless cycles of conflict and war? Can rival nations become partners and establish a lasting and stable peace? How Enemies Become Friends provides a bold and innovative account of how nations escape geopolitical competition and replace hostility with friendship. Through compelling analysis and rich historical examples that span the globe and range from the thirteenth century through the present, foreign policy expert Charles Kupchan explores how adversaries can transform enmity into amity—and he exposes prevalent myths about the causes of peace. Kupchan contends that diplomatic engagement with rivals, far from being appeasement, is critical to rapprochement between adversaries. Diplomacy, not economic interdependence, is the currency of peace; concessions and strategic accommodation promote the mutual trust needed to build an international society. The nature of regimes matters much less than commonly thought: countries, including the United States, should deal with other states based on their foreign policy behavior rather than on whether they are democracies. Kupchan demonstrates that similar social orders and similar ethnicities, races, or religions help nations achieve stable peace. He considers many historical successes and failures, including the onset of friendship between the United States and Great Britain in the early twentieth century, the Concert of Europe, which preserved peace after 1815 but collapsed following revolutions in 1848, and the remarkably close partnership of the Soviet Union and China in the 1950s, which descended into open rivalry by the 1960s. In a world where conflict among nations seems inescapable, How Enemies Become Friends offers critical insights for building lasting peace.
